Summary: This study examines the associations between food addiction, binge eating disorder, and other appetitive traits, as well as dietary quality in adults with obesity seeking bariatric surgery. The findings suggest that food addiction and binge eating disorder may represent different cognitions and behaviors.

Summary: The review highlights that weight-loss interventions lead to a significant decrease in binge eating and loss of control eating behaviors in youth. Furthermore, a greater reduction in these behaviors is associated with improved weight loss outcomes, suggesting the importance of addressing binge eating and loss of control eating in weight-loss treatments for children and adolescents.

Summary: Bariatric surgery leads to long-term weight loss and improved metabolic phenotype by affecting the gut-brain axis. However, the impact of the surgery on disordered eating behaviors is not well understood, and understanding this is crucial for improving treatment outcomes for people with obesity.

Summary: In this pilot study, responsive deep brain stimulation (DBS) was used to improve self-control of food intake and weight loss in two patients with binge eating disorder (BED) and severe obesity. Increased low-frequency oscillations in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), recorded during food cravings preceding loss of control (LOC) eating, were used to guide the delivery of DBS. Over 6 months, improved self-control of food intake and weight loss were observed. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to determine the scalability of this approach.

Summary: This qualitative study explored the personal experiences of women with binge eating disorder who participated in a 12-week trial comparing pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Participants highlighted the importance of self-awareness in addressing binge eating behaviors and emotions, as well as the value of interpersonal relationships with clinicians. Medication (MP) was seen to reduce food preoccupation and binge frequency, while CBT focused on psychoeducation and long-term binge management skills. Stress was identified as a primary trigger for binge eating in both groups.

Summary: This qualitative study developed the first cognitive behavioural therapy model outlining the development and maintenance of disordered eating in type 1 diabetes. It also reported on recovery strategies and resilience factors to improve previous theoretical models. The study findings highlighted the importance of interventions for disordered eating in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Summary: "CBT-ED has made significant progress in the past 5 years, with new findings reinforcing existing models, advancing understanding and utility, and suggesting new directions for exploration. Recent developments include extending methods, developing new approaches for working with younger populations, and adapting delivery methods in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges persist in addressing poor outcomes for anorexia nervosa."

Summary: This study developed and piloted a new scale, the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Scale for Eating Disorders (CBTS-ED), to evaluate therapist competence in evidence-based cognitive-behaviour therapy for eating disorders (CBT-ED). The scale showed good internal consistency and moderate/good inter-rater reliability. It can be effectively used by both expert and non-expert raters.

Summary: This study found significant associations between low levels of body appreciation and high levels of weight bias internalization, disordered eating, and symptoms of depression and anxiety among presurgical bariatric patients. Both body appreciation and weight bias internalization significantly accounted for unique variance in symptoms of binge eating and disinhibited eating, with depressive symptoms also being statistically significant in all analyses.

Summary: This study used the Bayesian approach to assess the effectiveness of perioperative psychological interventions for clinically severe obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The results showed that these interventions may have little to no benefit in terms of weight loss and body mass index (BMI), and the impact on psychosocial outcomes was inconsistent. The evidence was of low certainty.

Summary: This study found that nonnormative eating behaviors and eating disorders were common among patients undergoing obesity surgery, and postoperative improvements were observed. Loss-of-control eating and binge-eating disorder of low frequency and/or limited duration were prospectively associated with reduced long-term health-related quality of life following surgery.

Summary: This systematic review examines the sociodemographic, clinical, and psychological features of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in patients with eating disorders, obesity, or undergoing bariatric surgery. The study found that NES patients have elevated eating disorder pathology and higher occurrence of depressive symptoms compared to controls. The review suggests that NES can be differentiated from Binge Eating Disorder based on factors such as emotional eating, body-related concerns, and abnormal eating episodes.
