Pathway to a land-neutral expansion of Brazilian renewable fuel production

Summary: Biofuels, the only available bulk renewable fuel, have limited expansion potential due to high land requirements and associated risks. To address this issue, the proposal suggests increasing output from ethanol refineries using a land-neutral methanol pathway. The Brazilian sugarcane ethanol industry serves as an example to illustrate how this pathway can increase fuel output by up to 49% without additional land.

However, a consensus on how to define and assess feasibility has not been reached. Feasible is defined as do-able under realistic assumptions. A sound feasibility assessment is based on causal reasoning, enables comparison across climate options, considers the agency of its audience, and reflects on implementation levels.
