Summary: In this study, we investigated the photosynthetic characteristics of the crustose coralline alga Pneophyllum fragile in response to elevated water temperature and irradiance. We found that P. fragile exhibited a distinct adaptability to high temperatures and strong irradiance, with increased photosynthesis capacity and respiration rate. The compensation irradiance and saturation irradiance also increased with increasing water temperature.

Summary: A comparative study between a centuries-old manmade structure and the nearest natural reef at St. Eustatius in the eastern Caribbean found that the artificial reef had significantly lower species richness and fewer competitive interactions than the natural reef. The artificial reef was dominated by crustose coralline algae and zoantharians, while the natural reef was dominated by turf algae and fire corals. Significant differences in species composition were also found between exposed and sheltered sites on both reefs.

Summary: Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are important for reef framework construction, but little is known about their growth and calcification in seasonal upwelling systems. This study assessed the growth and calcification rates of two dominant reef-building CCA species in a shallow coral reef in the Colombian Caribbean. Results showed higher growth and calcification rates during the upwelling season compared to the non-upwelling season. Seawater temperature was found to have an inverse relationship with CCA growth and calcification. These findings provide important baseline data and information for monitoring the impacts of environmental changes on tropical upwelling environments.

Summary: This study examined the percentages and rates of internal bioerosion by macroborer invertebrates in two dominant crustose coralline algae (CCA) species in the Colombian Caribbean. The results showed that rates of calcium carbonate removal by internal macroborers were higher in Lithoplyllum kaiseri compared to Porolithon antillarum, with mollusks identified as having the highest erosion activity. Despite no clear influence of climatic seasons on internal bioerosion, the high rates of CCA bioerosion may reduce reef consolidation in the region.

Summary: This study developed a DEB-IBM model to simulate population dynamics of the sea urchin Abatus cordatus in the Kerguelen Islands. The model predicts a more determinant effect of food resources on population densities compared to temperature, and forecasts a sharp decline in population densities under IPCC climate change scenarios RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5, leading to extinction due to high mortality levels associated with temperature increases. Such a dynamic model offers promising prospects for biodiversity research in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions.

Summary: The ability to use DNA metabarcoding of bulk samples to gather genetic information directly from the environment is crucial for understanding biodiversity and population dynamics in the marine realm. In this study, we use bioinformatics tools to investigate intraspecific genetic variability for marine invertebrates in the Mediterranean Sea. By analyzing samples from Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS), we identify diverse haplotypes and emphasize the spatial scale of genetic variability.

Summary: Genetic data show that many nominal species are composed of more than one biological species, and thus contain cryptic species. Ignoring cryptic species can lead to confusion and impact our understanding of ecological and evolutionary processes, as well as decisions in conservation or medicine. This study surveyed free-living marine metazoans and found that scientific history and species distribution range are important factors influencing the presence of cryptic species. Additionally, different biological traits also affect the number of cryptic species.

Summary: This study investigates the evolutionary history and speciation mechanisms of montane potamids in the Hengduan Mountains Region. The results suggest that the vicariance events of these crabs are correlated with the emergence of sky islands due to the uplift of the mountains. The mountain ridges provided corridors for their dispersal and past climatic conditions played a crucial role in their evolutionary history. The mechanisms isolating sky islands are reinforced by the climatic features of dry-hot valleys and continue to affect local diversification.

Summary: This study investigates the phylogenetic relationships among patellogastropod families using mitochondrial and phylogenomic data. The results show that the mitochondrial phylogeny recovers monophyly of most families, but the relationships among families are still contentious. However, a more robust family-level topology consistent with morphology is achieved by phylogenomics. Additionally, the mainly deep-water families are found to be monophyletic, suggesting a single colonization of the deep water during the Jurassic.

Summary: Despite numerous studies on hybrid speciation, our understanding of this process remains limited. In this study, we conducted an 18-year systematic investigation on Populus taxa on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and discovered three new taxa that originated from distant hybridization between two different sections. These hybrid taxa demonstrate greater ecological adaptability than their ancestral species due to heterosis. We propose a hybrid speciation process model that can explain important evolutionary concerns.

Summary: Unlike conspicuous ochrophytes, many small and overlooked flagellates belonging to basally branching stramenopiles remain poorly characterized at the cellular or genomic level. This study describes four new species, including two new genera, of sediment-dwelling MAST-6 and provides updated phylogenomic tree of stramenopiles. The characterization of these flagellates is important due to their phylogenetic diversity and abundance in various environments.

Summary: Phylogenomic conflicts are widespread among genomic data, with most previous studies primarily focusing on nuclear datasets instead of organellar genomes. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetic conflicts within and between plastid and mitochondrial genomes using Potentilla as a case study. We found that both plastid and mitochondrial genomes divided Potentilla into eight highly supported clades, with two newly identified clades. Our results demonstrate that mitochondrial genes can fully resolve phylogenetic relationships among major clades of Potentilla and are not always linked with plastomes in evolutionary history.

Summary: Traditionally, differences between species have been associated with morphological variation. However, the discovery of cryptic diversity suggests that the evolution of distinct lineages can occur without morphological differences. Through genetic analysis, we found that a tropical montane plant lineage is composed of numerous unrecognized genetic groups that are not morphologically distinct. Geographic distance and topography play a crucial role in determining the genetic divergence of these groups.
