Circulating miR-21 levels in hypertensive patients with asymptomatic organ damage

As a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, presence of hypertension (HT) necessitates the awareness of asymptomatic organ damage (AOD). The aim of this study was to measure plasma micro RNA-21 (miR-21) and the parameters that reflect AOD such as carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), microalbuminuria (MAU) in hypertensive patients compared with healthy controls. In addition, the aim of this study was to evaluate plasma miR-21 levels in HT patients with AOD. This study was designed as a cross-sectional observational study. The study includes 2 groups: 32 patients with HT and 32 healthy controls. First, we compared these 2 groups. Then, to underline the relationship between plasma miR-21 and HT, hypertensive patients were divided into 2 groups: with AOD and without AOD. Sixteen patients with HT had AOD. MiR-21 levels significantly correlated with clinical systolic and diastolic blood pressure, MAU, Creactive protein, and CIMT. CIMT, miR-21, and MAU levels were significantly higher in patients with AOD. Our study showed increased miR-21 levels in HT patients with AOD.

Summary: In this study, a large family cluster of 29 genetically related patients hospitalized with COVID-19 was compared to unrelated patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The family cluster showed more severe disease and worse clinical course, with higher hospitalization rates and ICU transfers. Further studies into potential genetic mechanisms of host susceptibility are warranted.

The relationship between positivity for COVID-19 RT-PCR and symptoms, clinical findings, and mortality in Turkey

Summary: The study found that among suspected COVID-19 patients with pneumonia symptoms and lung infiltrates consistent with COVID-19 on CT imaging, there were no significant differences in symptoms, physical examination, total CT scores, hospitalization duration, ICU requirement, and mortality rate between RT-PCR-positive and RT-PCR-negative patients. However, PCR-positive patients appeared to require more specific treatments.

Long-Term Prognosis of Patients with Heart Failure: Follow-Up Results of Journey HF-TR Study Population

Summary: Despite advancements in therapeutic management, heart failure patients still experience increasing morbidity and mortality worldwide. This retrospective study presents the 3-year follow-up outcomes of patients from the Journey HF-TR study, evaluating the clinical characteristics and management of acute heart failure patients admitted to the hospital and providing national registry data. Among 1311 patients, the ratio of hospitalization and mortality during the follow-up period was 70.5% and 52.1% respectively. Acute decompensation of heart failure and acute coronary syndrome were common causes of mortality. Angiotensin receptor blockers, beta blockers, statins, and sacubitril/valsartan were found to reduce mortality.

The impact of daily troponin I and D-dimer serum levels on mortality in COVID-19 pneumonia patients

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of NF-κB, PPAR-α, and PPAR-β in older adults with MetS. The results showed that CRP, NF-κB levels, and CIMT were significantly higher in the MetS group compared to the control group, while PPAR-α and PPAR-β levels were significantly lower. ROC analysis indicated that NF-κB, PPAR-α, and PPAR-β could serve as indicators of MetS in younger adults, but not in older adults.

Summary: The presence of neutralizing antibodies against Ad-36 was found to be significantly different between obese patients with type 2 diabetes and non-obese individuals, suggesting that Ad-36 seropositivity is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes independent of obesity. Additionally, BMI and Ad-36 were found to significantly increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in both obese and non-obese individuals.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of cytokine hemadsorption as an immunomodulation therapy in ICU patients. The results showed that cytokine hemadsorption significantly reduced cytokine levels and other inflammatory indicators, decreased mortality rate, and improved organ failure. IL-10 levels, APACHE scores, and mortality rates were found to be important predictors of mortality in ICU patients.
