Summary: There is a relationship between sleep and inflammatory factors, and the quality of sleep in MDD patients is associated with specific inflammatory factors. Poor sleep quality is negatively correlated with IL-2 and IL-8 levels, and positively correlated with IL-6, IL-10, CRP, TNF-alpha, CXCL-1, CXCL-2, and IFN-gamma levels.

Summary: This study examines the association between the reoccurrence of illness (ROI), the phenome of depression, and major dysmood disorder (MDMD) features and immune response in major depressive disorder and a major depressive episode (MDD/MDE). The results show that MDMD is characterized by heightened immune responses, which are a consequence of ROI-associated sensitization combined with immunostimulatory triggers.

Summary: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent low mood and loss of interest. The immune and inflammatory systems have been found to play a role in MDD, with evidence suggesting the involvement of pro-inflammatory molecules. Agents acting on these mediators and possessing anti-inflammatory potential are being evaluated as therapeutic options for MDD.

Summary: This study provides the first evidence of augmented T-cell mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (T-cell mitoROS) in young, otherwise healthy adults with MDD. Although the elevated T-cell mitoROS did not correspond to a proinflammatory profile, these findings suggest that elevated T-cell mitoROS may be an early marker of immune system dysregulation in young adults with MDD.

Summary: Current treatments for major depressive disorder primarily focus on targeting the monoaminergic neurotransmission. However, limitations in efficacy and adverse effects restrict the use of conventional antidepressants to a limited subset of patients. The inefficacy of classical antidepressants in treating treatment-resistant depression has shifted the focus to alternative pathogenic pathways, particularly immuno-inflammatory pathways. This review highlights the connection between inflammatory pathways and major depressive disorder and examines the current clinical status of inflammation-modulating drugs in its treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the changes and biomarker potential of inflammation-related miRNAs in depression patients. The results showed that depression patients had higher levels of inflammatory cytokines in plasma and aberrant expression of inflammation-related miRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The combination of miR-342, miR-146a, and miR-155 showed highly specific and sensitive diagnostic capabilities for depression.

Synthetic agonists targeting TNF receptors have potential clinical benefits in amplifying immune responses, but their translation into human clinical studies has been limited and raised questions about the biology of TNF receptors.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the levels of growth factors in anorexia nervosa (AN). The results showed that AN patients had lower levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin growth factor-I (IGF-1) compared to controls, but these levels increased with weight restoration. The findings suggest that the low levels of BDNF and IGF-1 in AN are likely a consequence of starvation, which can be reversed with weight restoration. Furthermore, the increase in BDNF and IGF-1 during therapeutic weight restoration may enhance neuroplasticity and improve the success of psychotherapy.

Summary: This study interviewed 21 clinicians working in Specialist Eating Disorder Services to explore their perspectives on supporting individuals with severe anorexia nervosa in inpatient and day patient treatments. The study found similarities between the two intensive treatment approaches, such as the value of intensive and multidisciplinary support and the challenge of managing complex needs with limited resources. Differences were also identified, including the relationship to patients' home environments, patient motivation, and risk management.

Summary: Emotional overeating is a process associated with binge-eating disorder, with underlying factors including genetic vulnerability, cognitive and emotional traits, and environmental influences. Many sufferers of binge-eating disorder do not seek treatment, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention and prevention. Current treatment approaches primarily involve cognitive psychotherapies and antidepressant medications, but novel interventions targeting underlying mechanisms are being developed.

Summary: Recent research suggests that the gut microbiota may play a pivotal role in the development of psychiatric disorders, such as anorexia nervosa (AN). Evidence has shown that the gut microbiota is involved in the pathophysiology of AN, including immune system regulation, the gut-brain axis, and gastrointestinal (GI) function. Similarities have been found between the gut microbial composition, mechanisms of interaction, and GI symptoms in AN and other GI disorders. Probiotics have shown therapeutic effects in these disorders, and there is preliminary evidence supporting their use in AN for immune modulation and symptom improvement.
