Summary: The representation of women in speaker roles at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meetings has increased over time, but there is still a gender imbalance. Women are more likely to participate in non-technical speaking roles. It is necessary to promote a shift in speaker role distribution to increase the representation of women in orthopaedics.

Summary: Telehealth services are seen as a complement to in-person neurologic care, with a focus on supporting patient access regardless of location. The American Academy of Neurology advocates for coverage of telehealth services by all subscriber benefits, equitable provider reimbursement, simplified state licensing requirements, and expanding telehealth research and quality initiatives. Roles and responsibilities of providers should be clearly defined in telehealth service models.

Summary: This study evaluated the publication rates of abstracts presented at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences meetings in 2011 and 2016, finding that approximately 21% to 24% of the papers were eventually published, mainly in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. Future research should focus on identifying obstacles to publication and strategies to facilitate the process to maintain the value of papers presented at prestigious organizations over time.

Summary: Limited understanding of the contagiosity and case fatality rate of COVID-19 has resulted in strict limitations on non-emergency healthcare, especially in head and neck medicine and dentistry. The oral cavity may provide a favorable environment for SARS-CoV-2 entry and persistence, but intraoral innate immune mechanisms could provide antiviral effects. More research is needed to determine the significance of intraoral tissues in SARS-CoV-2 transmission and persistence, as well as to investigate the true source of contagiosity in asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the expression patterns of specific desmosomal cadherins (DSG1/2/3) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and their associations with clinicopathological parameters and recurrence rates. The results showed that overexpression of DSG-3 was significantly associated with poor histologic differentiation, cervical node metastasis at primary diagnosis, and early recurrence. Determination of DSG-3 expression in OSCC specimens may be valuable for treatment planning and post-therapeutic risk assessment.

Summary: This cross-sectional study investigated the association between obstructive sleep apnea and periodontitis in Chinese male adults. The results showed a positive correlation between obstructive sleep apnea and periodontitis, with 32.5% of patients diagnosed with periodontitis also having obstructive sleep apnea. The lowest oxygen saturation was significantly associated with the prevalence of periodontitis.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of using three-dimensional virtual surgical planning (VSP) and additive manufactured tools in the secondary reconstruction of midface deformities. The results showed that there were deviations between the virtual plans and postoperative positions, and the use of patient-specific implants (PSI) can reduce the displacement of bone segments.

Summary: This study assessed the expression patterns of PRAME, NY-ESO1, and SSX2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC) and found that PRAME expression was associated with poorer progression-free survival. Additionally, the expression of SSX2 and NY-ESO-1 was rare in the samples. Therefore, PRAME may serve as a suitable marker for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the cytostatic effects of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) on different HNSCC cell lines and its combination treatment with low dose cisplatin. The results showed that 120 s of CAP exposure significantly reduced cell viability, while 60 s of exposure increased DNA damage. Concurrent treatment with CAP and low dose cisplatin exhibited additive effects, and CAP could restore the sensitivity of Cal 27 cells to cisplatin.

Summary: This study used a pig model to investigate the link between chronic oral infections (periodontitis) and medication-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The results showed that oral infections can trigger MRONJ without prior dental surgical interventions, thus ruling out the decisive role of oral mucosal trauma in MRONJ pathogenesis.
