Here, the study is focused on the synthesis and determination of physicochemical properties of four alpha-pinene secondary organic aerosol (SOA) products: cis-pinic acid, cis-pinonic acid, cis-norpinic acid, and cis-norpinonic acid. These encompass their thermal properties, solid-liquid phase equilibria, and dissociation constant (pK(a)). Thermal properties, including the melting temperature, enthalpy of fusion, temperature, and enthalpy of the phase transitions, were measured with the differential scanning calorimetry technique. These SOA components exhibit relatively high melting temperatures from 364.32 K for cis-pinic acid to 440.68 K for cis-norpinic acid. The enthalpies of fusion vary from 14.75 kJ.mol(-1) for cis-norpinic acid to 30.35 kJ.mol(-1) for cis-pinonic acid. The solubility in water was determined with the dynamic method (solid-liquid phase equilibria method), and then experimental results were interpreted and correlated using three different mathematical models: Wilson, non-random two-liquid model, and universal quasichemical equations. The results of the correlation indicate that the Wilson equation appears to work the best for all investigated compounds, giving rise to the lowest value of a standard deviation. cis-Norpinic acid and cis-pinic acid (dicarboxylic acids) show better solubility in the aqueous solution than cis-norpinonic acid and cis-pinonic acid (monocarboxylic acids), which affect the multiphase chemistry of alpha-pinene SOA processes. For cis-pinonic acid and cis-norpinonic acid, also pH-profile solubility was determined. The intrinsic solubility (S-0) for cis-norpinonic acid was measured to be 0.05 mmol.dm(-3), while for cis-pinonic acid, it was found to be 0.043 mmol.dm(-3). The acidity constants (pK(a)) at 298 and 310 K using the Bates-Schwarzenbach spectrophotometric method were determined. The pK(a) values at 298.15 K for cis-norpinonic acid and cis-pinonic acid were found to be 4.56 and 5.19, respectively, whereas at 310.15 K, pK(a) values were found to be -4.76 and 5.25, respectively.

Summary: Experimental study on the impact of α-pinene SOA demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on cellular proliferation and increased oxidative stress in BEAS-2B lung cells, while had little impact on A549 cells. Further research is needed to explore the long-term inhalation exposure effects of α-pinene SOA components.

Reaction Kinetics of Green Leaf Volatiles with Sulfate, Hydroxyl, and Nitrate Radicals in Tropospheric Aqueous Phase

Summary: Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs) released by stressed green plants can react in the atmosphere to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The aqueous-phase reactions of GLVs with SO4 center dot-, (OH)-O-center dot, and NO3 center dot show an increasing rate with temperature, while the atmospheric lifetimes of GLVs decrease with higher liquid water content and radical concentrations.

Aneta Jezierska, Jaroslaw J. Panek, Kacper Blaziak, Kamil Raczynski, Aleksander Koll

Summary: In this study, intra- and intermolecular interactions as well as proton transfer phenomena were investigated in selected N-oxide derivatives. Density Functional Theory and Time-Dependent extension were employed to simulate the structures and reactions of the compounds. The study revealed different interaction characteristics and proton transfer behaviors between the two compounds. Additionally, the effects of polar environment and solvation on interaction energies and excited states were analyzed.

Alkylation of Nitroarenes via Vicarious Nucleophilic Substitution - Experimental and DFT Mechanistic Studies

Damian Antoniak, Bartosz Paluba, Tymoteusz Basak, Kacper Blaziak, Michal Barbasiewicz

Summary: The alkylation of nitroarenes via Vicarious Nucleophilic Substitution (VNS) was experimentally tested and modeled with DFT calculations. Mechanistic studies showed intrinsic differences between the reactions of the carbanion precursor PhSO2CH2Cl and alkyl phenyl sulfones with benzenesulfinate as a leaving group. Steric hindrance developed at the beta-elimination step for the latter precursors, raising the energy barrier and resulting in the formation of byproducts.

Summary: Norpinic acid is a major oxidation product of alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, two important biogenic volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere. This study characterized the physicochemical properties of norpinic acid aerosol and investigated its reaction with OH radicals. The results showed that the aging products of norpinic acid particles are similar to the parent molecule when measured by AMS.

Summary: Plants under stress emit Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs), which may clarify uncertainties in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) budget. In this study, we investigated the aqueous photo-oxidation products of three abundant GLVs induced by center dot OH radicals. Advanced mass spectrometry techniques were used to analyze the reaction samples. The results suggest the potential formation of aqueous SOA and provide insight into the formation mechanism and structures of the identified oxidation products.

Importance of secondary organic aerosol formation of α-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol comparing day- and nighttime radical chemistry

Anke Mutzel, Yanli Zhang, Olaf Boege, Maria Rodigast, Agata Kolodziejczyk, Xinming Wang, Hartmut Herrmann

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation reactions of alpha-pinene, limonene, and m-cresol under different relative humidity conditions and found that the SOA formation potential varied significantly depending on the reaction and humidity levels. Limonene showed a higher SOA yield with NO3 radicals under dry conditions, while m-cresol exhibited unexpectedly high SOA yields with OH radicals, particularly under elevated RH. Alpha-pinene, on the other hand, yielded consistent levels of SOA regardless of RH. Additionally, the chemical composition and markers of SOA were found to differ between the different compounds and reaction conditions.
