Glioma is one of the most refractory types of brain tumor. Accurate tumor boundary identification and complete resection of the tumor are essential for glioma removal during brain surgery. We present a method based on visible resonance Raman (VRR) spectroscopy to identify glioma margins and grades. A set of diagnostic spectral biomarkers features are presented based on tissue composition changes revealed by VRR. The Raman spectra include molecular vibrational fingerprints of carotenoids, tryptophan, amide I/II/III, proteins, and lipids. These basic in situ spectral biomarkers are used to identify the tissue from the interface between brain cancer and normal tissue and to evaluate glioma grades. The VRR spectra are also analyzed using principal component analysis for dimension reduction and feature detection and support vector machine for classification. The cross-validated sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy are found to be 100%, 96.3%, and 99.6% to distinguish glioma tissues from normal brain tissues, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the classification is about 1.0. The accuracies to distinguish normal, low grade (grades I and II), and high grade (grades III and IV) gliomas are found to be 96.3%, 53.7%, and 84.1% for the three groups, respectively, along with a total accuracy of 75.1%. A set of criteria for differentiating normal human brain tissues from normal control tissues is proposed and used to identify brain cancer margins, yielding a diagnostic sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 71%. Our study demonstrates the potential of VRR as a label-free optical molecular histopathology method used for in situ boundary line judgment for brain surgery in the margins. (C) The Authors. On the voltage behavior of quantum dot light-emitting diode

Xiangwei Qu, Jingrui Ma, Pai Liu, Kai Wang, Xiao Wei Sun

Summary: This work investigates the voltage sweep behavior of quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). It is found that red QLEDs with ZnMgO electron transport layer (ETL) experience a drop in efficiency under consecutive voltage sweeps, while devices with ZnO ETL show an increase in efficiency. The analysis reveals that the efficiency drop in ZnMgO devices is related to hole leakage mediated by trap states on ZnMgO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the hole leakage also causes rapid lifetime degradation of ZnMgO devices.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) through mechanisms that remain incompletely characterized. Similar cellular metabolic alterations and modulated cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) are observed in both AD and TBI models. Increased levels of C-terminal fragment of APP (C99) in AD cell models promote the formation of transient lipid raft domains in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) known as mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAM domains), which significantly modulate cellular lipid homeostasis. This study provides evidence that alterations in the regulation of MAM and lipid metabolic pathways may contribute to the connection between TBI and AD.

Potential of the Amorphous Oxide Semiconductors for Heterogeneous Power Integration Applications

Xianda Zhou, Lei Lu, Yang Liu, Kai Wang, Yufeng Guo, Hanbin Ma, Jun Yu, Arokia Nathan, Johnny K. O. Sin

Summary: In the field of emerging heterogeneous power integration applications, power devices need to be fabricated on metal/glass/organics. Amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOSs) have become the dominant semiconductor material for low-temperature fabrication. The tradeoff between specific ON-resistance (R-ON,sp) and breakdown voltage (BV) in AOSs is discussed and found to be different from that in commonly used single-crystal semiconductors. An analytical model is developed to describe the unique dependence of carrier mobility on carrier concentration in AOSs, showing that R-ON,sp is proportional to BV4. Additionally, the use of a heavily doped drift region under a two-dimensional condition, such as reduced surface field (RESURF) condition, can resolve the issue of mobility degradation.

Dynamic Changes of Brain Activity in Different Responsive Groups of Patients with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness

Chen Chen, Jinying Han, Shuang Zheng, Xintong Zhang, Haibo Sun, Ting Zhou, Shunyin Hu, Xiaoxiang Yan, Changqing Wang, Kai Wang, Yajuan Hu

Summary: Changes in resting-state EEG microstate parameters were observed in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) after high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), indicating an improvement in consciousness. Specifically, the duration and coverage of class C microstates significantly increased in the responsive group (RE), while these changes have not been reported in the non-responsive group (N-RE). Our findings suggest that EEG neural signatures can be used to assess consciousness states, and that improvement in brain activity dynamics is associated with the recovery of DOCs.

Oxytocin-Receptor Gene Modulates Reward-Network Connection and Relationship with Empathy Performance

Dandan Li, Long Zhang, Tongjian Bai, Bensheng Qiu, Chunyan Zhu, Kai Wang

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the modulatory effect of common variations in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) on reward circuitry function and its relationship with empathy. Using functional connectivity and spontaneous local activity analyses in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), the results showed that individuals with the rs2268493 TT genotype had lower functional connectivity between the NAcc and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as well as the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). These findings suggest that common OXTR variations have a modulatory effect on the connection between the NAcc and the central hubs of empathic networks, providing insights into the neural basis of the modulatory effect of OXTR on empathic behavior.

Summary: Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) enables high signal-to-noise ratio imaging of metabolic dynamics, but its spatial resolution is limited. We developed an Adam optimization-based pointillism deconvolution (A-PoD) algorithm to achieve super-resolved SRS imaging. A-PoD was applied to compare nanoscopic distributions of proteins and lipids in cells and subcellular organelles. The A-PoD-coupled DO-SRS method allowed for the differentiation of newly synthesized lipids in lipid droplets and revealed metabolic changes in brain samples.
