The sedimentology and tectonics and their relationship of the Paleozoic series that fill the Ghadames basin and its northern extension consisting of the Jefarah basin in Libya and Tunisia was studied. These formations belong to the Gondwana cycle and are typically interpreted as being deposited in a cratonic basin truncated by the Hercynian unconformity. This study is based on wells. The stratigraphic correlation between the wells is based on the definition of second order cycles, electrofacies and electrosequences notion. This allowed to produce isopach maps of facies distributions and to reconstruct the paleogeography of the different stratigraphic units. These data allow to address the nature of the deformation and also clarifies the behavior of active high regional areas during the Palaeozoic. The Paleozoic succession in the Ghadames and Jefarah basins can be divided into five first order sequences, bounded by major tectonic unconformities with sequence durations of 40-70 Ma. Within these five sequences 18 s order sequences (10-40 Ma) were differentiated, describing Sequence Boundaries (SB), Maximum Flooding Surfaces (MFS) and sedimentological characteristics.

Summary: The Aquifer-CO2 Leak project aims to study the migration of carbon dioxide in aquifers and test CO2 monitoring equipment. The experiment will be conducted in an underground limestone quarry in France, with successful estimation of experiment parameters through numerical simulations. Sensitivity analysis identified water table level and dispersivity as the most sensitive parameters.

Summary: The study aims to understand the environmental impact of a CO2 leak on water quality in a carbonate freshwater aquifer, as well as CO2-water-carbonate interactions. Using an Oligocene carbonate underground quarry experiment, key indicators for monitoring a gas plume during CO2 geological storage were identified, along with the importance of the interaction between CO2 and limestone.

Summary: The study aims to understand the impact of dissolved CO2 concentrations on physicochemical parameters, particularly electrical conductivity and pH. Through laboratory experiments and measurements, a calibration line has been established to link the relation between electrical conductivity, CO2 concentrations, and pH values, providing a way to estimate CO2 concentrations based on electrical properties.

Summary: An experimental leak simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of CO2 injection on a shallow carbonated aquifer. The results showed that dissolved CO2 led to the dissolution of calcite and desorption of iron oxides, resulting in increased concentrations of trace elements in the water. However, the aquifer showed strong resilience and buffering capacity, with concentrations returning to initial levels relatively quickly.

Evaluation of reservoir systems in Paleozoic sedimentary formations of Ghadames and Jefarah basins

A. Jabir, A. Cerepi, C. Loisy, J-L Rubino

Summary: This study investigates the general characteristics of reservoirs in Paleozoic formations in the Ghadames and Jefarah basins in Libya and Tunisia. By analyzing data from over twenty-six wells, it identifies nine main Paleozoic reservoir systems and their connection to major hydrocarbon source rocks. The research demonstrates the influence of depositional facies and paleogeographical setting on the evolution and heterogeneity of reservoir properties.

Summary: This paper studies the sedimentary and diagenetic factors controlling the heterogeneity and petrophysical properties of carbonate reservoir systems. The research findings show that diagenetic processes such as dolomitization play a crucial role in the development of porosity and permeability in reservoir rocks.

Summary: This study improves the stratigraphic scheme of the Tremp-Graus Basin sedimentary succession by using a new dataset of isotopic variations and organic carbon content, supported by biostratigraphic analysis and previous data. The research reveals significant isotopic variations in the studied deposits, which can be correlated with global geologic events.

Summary: This study investigates water dynamics in a carbonate vadose zone using TDR method and electrical properties at the natural site of Saint-Emilion in an underground quarry in Gironde, France. The research considers physical properties of the medium such as porosity, permeability and effective diffusivity to explain the water transfer process. Electrical resistivity tomography provides 2D images of water dynamics, with changes in water content affecting the electrical properties of the medium.

Integrating multi-criteria analysis and geospatial applications for mapping flood hazards in Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Ghana

Samuel Yaw Danso, Yi Ma, Adams Osman, Isaac Yeboah Addo

Summary: This study conducted a spatial assessment and mapping of flood hazards in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STM) of Ghana using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and geographical information system. The results indicate that about 12% of STM lands are in very high flood zones and 24% are in high flood zones. The lower portions of STM are identified as the most susceptible to inundation. These findings provide valuable insights for effective flood planning and prevention in STM.

Bulk composition and O-C isotope constraints on the petrogenesis of Richat carbonatites (Mauritania)

Maham Eboubekrine Sedigh, Houssa Ouali, Michel Jebrak, Abdelkader Mokhtari

Summary: The carbonatites from the Richat dome in Mauritania are unique and underdocumented geological features. This study provides insight into the mineralogy and petrogenesis of the carbonatites, revealing three identified types and their association with spinel-bearing peridotite. The geochemical characteristics of the Richat carbonatites are similar to other Cretaceous alkaline carbonatite occurrences in different regions, suggesting a common geological process. The reactivation of a deep pan-African lineament is considered a fundamental factor in the formation of the Richat carbonatites.

Cenomanian gastropods of Bellezma-Aures mountains (Batna, NE Algeria): Taxonomy, palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography

Riadh Aouissi, Gamal Mohamed El Qot, Sihem Salmi-Laouar, Catalina Gomez-Espinosa, Blanca E. Buitron-Sanchez

Summary: Twenty-one gastropod species have been identified in the Cenomanian deposits of Bellezma-Aures mountains, eastern Saharan Atlas, Algeria, with four of them recorded for the first time in the Batna mountains. These gastropods are mainly found in the 'Marnes de Smail' Formation, and their community changes may be attributed to minor sea-level fluctuations, sedimentation rate variations, and hydrodynamics. The paleobiogeographic distribution of these gastropod assemblages indicates a tethyan affinity and faunal exchange during that time interval.

Summary: The study on gully erosion in the East African Rift Valley of Kenya reveals that human activities and rainstorms are the main factors causing erosion. Gully erosion poses a serious threat to the ecological environment, particularly the man-made and fissure-induced gullies that should be further investigated.
