Product-Service Systems (PSS) terminology is becoming increasingly common across management disciplines. Despite rapid growth in the number of PSS publications, relatively little attention has been dedicated to advancing the theoretical underpinnings required for robust PSS research. This paper aims to address this issue through a two-stage systematic review. Initially, we conducted a first-stage 'review of reviews' to set up a broad database for the preliminary understanding of PSS evolution and its theoretical progress. Subsequently, we undertook a second-stage review to explore the use of different theories for developing PSS research. We identify four clusters of theories and illustrate how they underpin ten distinct research themes and a systems approach in PSS. We then construct a framework of five theoretical lenses (identity, competence, efficiency, power and systems) that guide theory development discussion in PSS research. We argue that further research would benefit from adopting a systems approach that explores the interactions in PSS and favors interdisciplinary theory development. More studies on productisation and comparable studies between servitisation and productisation are also encouraged, for example, between industrial and consumer products and between B2B and B2C models.

Horizontal supply chain collaboration amongst small enterprises: insights from UK brewery networks

T. Ramjaun, V. S. Rodrigues, M. Kumar

Summary: This research paper investigates how horizontal collaboration among small businesses can support supply chain activities and lead to network enhancement. The findings suggest that successful horizontal initiatives require the formation of a unifying umbrella organization, and the management resources needed should not be underestimated. Social mechanisms can also contribute to network development, but the relationship between the umbrella organization and its members needs to be formalized.

Quality functions' use of customer feedback as activation triggers for absorptive capacity and value co-creation

Ida Gremyr, Andrea Birch-Jensen, Maneesh Kumar, Nina Lofberg

Summary: The purpose of this study is to explore the potential evolution of quality functions in the digital age and the increasing focus on services. The findings suggest that customer feedback-based activation triggers can contribute to the development of absorptive capacity in the quality function, particularly when there are established processes in place. However, personalized feedback lacks established processes. The study highlights the importance of developing digital capabilities to effectively engage in value co-creation.

The development of quality capabilities in Brazilian breweries: A Co-evolutionary approach

Alexandre Luis Prim, Kenyth Alves de Freitas, Ely Laureano Paiva, Maneesh Kumar

Summary: SMEs rely more on external partners to access resources for developing their quality capabilities due to limited internal resources. This study explores how firms of different sizes and internal resource characteristics interact with the external environment to develop their quality capabilities. The findings suggest that internal resources play an important role in determining firms' co-evolutionary paths for developing quality capabilities. Large firms primarily rely on internal development, while SMEs actively engage with the environment, which affects their co-evolutionary paths. This study also provides guidance for managers to implement strategies for developing quality capabilities.

Tyson Browning, Maneesh Kumar, Nada Sanders, ManMohan S. Sodhi, Matthias Thuerer, Guilherme L. Tortorella

Summary: This study proposes an approach to rebuilding supply chains for resilience against systemwide disruptions. The authors focus on innovation in forecasting, supply chain risk management, and product design to enhance supply chain resilience. The study finds that all three areas have evolved in response to the challenges caused by the pandemic, including the shift from statistical forecasting to human-augmented forecasting with visual analytics, the transition from enterprise to supply chain risk management, and the shift from design-for-manufacturability to design-for-adaptability. These approaches must work together to build a resilient supply chain.

Examining the impact of market power discrepancy between supply chain partners on firm financial performance

Jing Gu, Xinyu Shi, Junyao Wang, Xun Xu

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.

Learning efficient in-store picking strategies to reduce customer encounters in omnichannel retail

Fabio Neves-Moreira, Pedro Amorim

Summary: Omnichannel retailers are using stores as distribution centers to provide faster online order fulfillment services. However, in-store picking operations can impact the offline customer experience. To address this, we propose a Dynamic In-store Picker Routing Problem (diPRP) that minimizes customer encounters while fulfilling online orders. Our solution approach combines mathematical programming and reinforcement learning to find efficient picking policies that reduce customer encounters.
