Dynamic Resource Optimization for Decentralized Estimation in Energy Harvesting IoT Networks

Claudio Battiloro, Paolo Di Lorenzo, Paolo Banelli, Sergio Barbarossa

Summary: The study focuses on decentralized estimation of time-varying signals at a fusion center with energy harvesting sensors transmitting data over rate-constrained links. Dynamic strategies are proposed for selecting radio parameters, sampling sets, and harvested energy at each node. Stochastic optimization tools are used for adaptive optimization without prior knowledge of channel statistics. Numerical results validate the approach for decentralized signal estimation under communication and energy constraints typical of Internet-of-Things scenarios.

Lyapunov-Based Optimization of Edge Resources for Energy-Efficient Adaptive Federated Learning

Claudio Battiloro, Paolo Di Lorenzo, Mattia Merluzzi, Sergio Barbarossa

Summary: This paper proposes a novel dynamic resource allocation strategy for energy-efficient adaptive federated learning at the wireless network edge, with latency and learning performance guarantees. By utilizing Lyapunov stochastic optimization tools, the radio parameters and computation resources are dynamically optimized to achieve the best trade-off between power, latency, and performance of the federated learning task. The method is customized for federated least mean squares (LMS) estimation and federated training of deep convolutional neural networks, and numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategy.

Wireless Edge Machine Learning: Resource Allocation and Trade-Offs

Mattia Merluzzi, Paolo Di Lorenzo, Sergio Barbarossa

Summary: This paper proposes a resource allocation strategy for dynamic training and inference of machine learning tasks at the edge of wireless network to explore the trade-off between energy, delay, and learning accuracy. Two dynamic strategies are introduced to minimize system energy consumption under constraints on service delay and accuracy, as well as to optimize learning accuracy while guaranteeing bounded energy consumption. The proposed approach aims to strike a balance between energy consumption and quality of service in Edge Machine Learning (EML) tasks.
