Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) and its associated factors among elderly patients attending primary health care clinics in the West Bank. The results showed that over one-third of the participants were using PIM, with polypharmacy and diabetes being the main predicting variables.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the amount of potentially inappropriate medication among excessively polymedicated patients using supporting tools and assess the feasibility of these tools in primary care. The results showed that elderly excessively polymedicated patients accumulated a great number of potentially inappropriate medications. The use of deprescribing supporting tools in primary care is feasible and well accepted by general practitioners, but actual deprescribing occurred in a minority of cases.

Summary: This study illustrates a pilot model of care in which a remote corporate-based clinical pharmacist conducted comprehensive medication reviews for medically complex HBPC patients. During the four-month pilot period, 175 medication recommendations were made, with 30.3% being accepted, mostly for medication discontinuation, deprescribing, and dose adjustments.

Summary: The study introduced a novel medication risk score (MRS) to evaluate medication regimens of older adults and found that only a small percentage of patients met the criteria, indicating potential for future use on high-risk patients. The MRS was associated with an increased risk of readmission for patients discharged home, highlighting its potential utility in identifying patients at high risk of medication-related iatrogenesis.

Summary: Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the long- and short-term effects of an expert consensus on the prevalence of polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use in elderly lung cancer patients with multimorbidity. The results showed that although the prevalence of polypharmacy decreased after the publication of the expert consensus, the trend of polypharmacy remained upward. The prevalence of PIM use decreased abruptly after the intervention but still showed an upward long-term trend.

Summary: Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication are highly prevalent in people with cognitive impairment in German day-care centers, and are associated with an increased risk of falls and hospital admissions. Healthcare providers should review medication regimens and avoid polypharmacy and PIM as much as possible.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use among elderly patients, finding rates of 45% and 57.3% at two different clinics. A substantial portion of patients had at least one medication stopped or modified, suggesting a need for increased physician awareness in order to reduce PIM use further.

Summary: This epidemiological study explored the association between polypharmacy and Beers criteria with the risk of falls in the elderly. The results showed a significant association between the risk of falls and polypharmacy as well as potentially inappropriate medication use. More than half of the study population had a high risk of falls, and older age, lower educational levels, female gender, and the use of cardiovascular medications were associated with higher rates of falls.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a predictive model of gait recovery after hip fracture using logistic regression. By identifying five groups of patients based on individual characteristics and setting a probability threshold of 0.706, the model achieved an accuracy of 0.64 in the validation set. Summary: Patients with hip fractures from aged care facilities are older, less mobile, and have more cognitive impairment compared to community dwellers. They receive different treatments during hospitalization and at discharge, and have a higher risk of gait decline and mortality at 1-month post-fracture. New studies are needed to develop a protocol tailored to the specific characteristics of each group to reduce the discrepancies in post-fracture outcomes between aged care facility residents and community dwellers.
