Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are widely present in multiple environmental media even long after the phaseout, posing a health risk to the general population. Dietary intake is the major exposure route of PCBs; however, information is limited regarding PCBs in food that people directly consume. This study aims to measure personal exposure to indicator PCBs, evaluate the health risks, and identify their sources in a typical metropolitan city in China. Multi-day food samples were collected from 21 subjects in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, in two seasons using the duplicate plate method. Samples were extracted and analyzed for seven indicator PCBs using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Average daily doses (ADDs) of n-ary sumation 7PCBs were estimated using Monte Carlo analysis with food intake information. Results show that PCB-118 and PCB-180 were the major congeners in food samples with average concentrations of 1.42 and 1.11 ng/g, respectively. The average (+/- SD) ADD of n-ary sumation 7PCBs was 26.47 +/- 22.10 ng/kg day among adults aged 18-69 years and displayed small variation across age groups. Comparing with the chronic RfD of 7 ng/kg day, 67% of people had their ADDs exceeding this threshold. The median cancer risk was 5.52 x 10(-5), and 51% of residents had risks exceeding the action level of 10(-4). The principal component analysis identified waste incineration, gasoline engine production, and leakage of #1 PCBs as the major PCBs sources. In conclusion, a large portion of Lanzhou residents has high non-cancer and cancer risks from dietary exposure to PCBs, which warrants control actions targeting these major sources.

Effects of chlorothalonil, prochloraz and the combination on intestinal barrier function and glucolipid metabolism in the liver of mice

Yanhua Wang, Cuiyuan Jin, Dou Wang, Jiajie Zhou, Guiling Yang, Kan Shao, Qiang Wang, Yuanxiang Jin

Summary: The study found that exposure to chlorothalonil, procymidone, or a combination of both may cause liver injury, significant changes in glucose, triglyceride levels, and related gene expression, inhibition of fatty acids β-oxidation, alteration of gut microbiota structure, and disruption of intestinal barrier function integrity. Additionally, an additive effect between chlorothalonil and procymidone in mice was observed.

Health risk assessment of As due to rice ingestion based on iAs distribution and actual consumption patterns for the residents in Beijing: a cross-sectional study

Suzhen Cao, Qi Cao, Kan Shao, Yijin Kang, Weigang Liang, Linlin Zhang, Juan Wang, Ning Qin, Xiaoli Duan

Summary: The study assessed the health risks of inorganic arsenic (iAs) from rice ingestion among different genders and ages in Beijing. Results showed that japonica rice and rice from Northeast China had higher arsenic content and were the most popular types consumed. The study also revealed that males had higher carcinogenic risk than females and the 45-55 age group had the highest carcinogenic risk, mainly attributed to japonica rice and rice from Northeast China.

Bioaccessibility of Inorganic Arsenic in Rice: Probabilistic Estimation and Identification of Influencing Factors

Zheng Zhou, Guiling Yang, Pengcheng Xun, Qiang Wang, Kan Shao

Summary: This study quantitatively characterized the bioaccessibility of iAs in rice and identified its influencing factors through meta-analysis and regression analysis. The results showed that grain size and the inorganic-to-total proportion of arsenic are negatively associated with bioaccessibility.

Key Factors for Improving the Carcinogenic Risk Assessment of PAH Inhalation Exposure by Monte Carlo Simulation

Ning Qin, Ayibota Tuerxunbieke, Qin Wang, Xing Chen, Rong Hou, Xiangyu Xu, Yunwei Liu, Dongqun Xu, Shu Tao, Xiaoli Duan

Summary: Traditional Monte Carlo simulation and age-stratified Monte Carlo simulation yielded average risks 2.6 times higher and standard deviations 3.7 times higher than actual values. In contrast, predicted risks of concentration-adjusted and correlated-parameter-adjusted models showed good agreement with actual ILCR values. Accurate simulation of exposure concentration and adjustment of correlated parameters can greatly improve MCS performance.

Health Risk Assessment of Metals via Multi-Source Oral Exposure for Children Living in Areas with Intense Electronic Manufacturing Activities

Beibei Wang, Chunye Lin, Hongguang Cheng, Xiaoli Duan, Qin Wang, Dongqun Xu

Summary: This study examined the health risks of metal(loid)s exposure through oral pathways for children in an area of China dominated by the electronic manufacturing industry. It found that food intake was the primary exposure pathway and identified Pb and Cr as major risk elements, with kindergarten children experiencing higher risks compared to primary school students. Prioritizing research on different types of food sources and their bioavailability is crucial for protecting children's health.

Assessment of Children's Metal Exposure via Hand Wipe, Outdoor Soil and Indoor Dust and Their Associations with Blood Biomarkers

Beibei Wang, Fei Gao, Yujie Li, Chunye Lin, Hongguang Cheng, Xiaoli Duan

Summary: The study compared children's exposure to soil metals using different sampling approaches and assessment strategies, finding that metal levels in hand wipes were higher and associated with children's age, years of residency, and the ground types of the play areas. Hand-to-mouth contact was identified as an important pathway for children's metal exposure. Pb, Mn, and Cr in hand wipes were significantly correlated with those in blood, while no relationships were found with soil and dust.

Environmental and Behavioral Factors in Association with Lung Function Impairment in Children Living in Wuhan, China

Suzhen Cao, Sai Li, Xiaoli Duan, Yaqun Zhang, Jicheng Gong, Qian Guo, Xiangyu Xu, Li Peng, Xin Meng

Summary: This study aims to identify the prevalence and potential influencing factors of impaired lung function in elementary school children in Wuhan, China. The results showed that children from rural areas had a higher prevalence of impaired lung function compared to those from urban areas. Several factors, including home renovations, physical exercise duration, preterm birth, and air pollution exposure during commuting, were associated with an increased risk of impaired lung function. Breastfeeding, longer window opening times, higher socioeconomics, and an urban living environment were found to be protective factors. It is recommended to promote breastfeeding, lengthen window opening times, and control household renovations and air pollution exposure to reduce the risk of impaired lung function in children in Wuhan.

The Effect of Historical Data-Based Informative Prior on Benchmark Dose Estimation of Toxicogenomics

Chao Ji, Kan Shao

Summary: High-throughput toxicogenomics is crucial in toxicity assessment of environmental chemicals, however, the limited data poses challenges to dose-response analyses. This study evaluates the effectiveness of informative priors in genomic dose-response modeling and benchmark dose estimation. Informative priors derived from historical data are sensitive to the specific datasets used for elicitation. Results suggest that BMD estimation with time-specific informative priors improves accuracy, decreases uncertainty, and enhances correlation compared to noninformative priors.

Benchmark dose modeling for epidemiological dose-response assessment using prospective cohort studies

Francesco De Pretis, Yun Zhou, Pengcheng Xun, Kan Shao

Summary: The BMD methodology is widely used for determining the toxicity value of chemicals, but its application to epidemiological data is limited. This study compares two different methods for BMD analysis in prospective cohort studies on bladder and lung cancer linked to inorganic arsenic exposure, and suggests that modeling adjusted RR values as continuous data for BMD estimation is a more generalizable approach harmonized with the BMD approach using toxicological data.
