The proper management of renal lithiasis presents a challenge, with the recurrence rate of the disease being as high as 46%. To prevent recurrence, the first step is the accurate categorization of the discarded renal calculi. Currently, the discarded renal calculi type is determined with the X-ray powder diffraction method which requires a cumbersome sample preparation. This work presents a new approach that can enable fast and accurate classification of discarded renal calculi with minimal sample preparation requirements. To do so, first, the measurements of the dielectric properties of naturally formed renal calculi are collected with the open-ended contact probe technique between 500 MHz and 6 GHz with 100 MHz intervals. Cole-Cole parameters are fitted to the measured dielectric properties with the generalized Newton-Raphson method. The renal calculi types are classified based on their Cole-Cole parameters as calcium oxalate, cystine, or struvite. The classification is performed using k-nearest neighbors (kNN) machine learning algorithm with the 10 nearest neighbors, where accuracy as high as 98.17% is achieved.

Zinc affects nuclear factor kappa b and DNA methyltransferase activity in C3H cancer fibroblast cells induced by a 2100 MHz electromagnetic field

D. Duzgun Ergun, N. Pastaci Ozsobaci, T. Yilmaz, D. Ozcelik, M. T. Kalkan

Summary: As the use of mobile phones becomes more widespread, concerns about their impact on human health are growing. A study has found that the electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by mobile phones may have negative effects on biological systems. This study investigates the effect of 2100 MHz EMF exposure on cancer fibroblast cells and explores the potential of zinc supplementation to mitigate these effects, finding that EMF exposure increases NF-kappa B and DNMT activities, while zinc supplementation reduces them.

Characterization of Open-Ended Coaxial Probe Sensing Depth with Respect to Aperture Size for Dielectric Property Measurement of Heterogeneous Tissues

Cemanur Aydinalp, Sulayman Joof, Ismail Dilman, Ibrahim Akduman, Tuba Yilmaz

Summary: The open-ended coaxial probe (OECP) method is frequently used for microwave dielectric property (DP) characterization of high permittivity and conductivity materials. However, the method suffers from high measurement error, with tissue heterogeneity being a major contributor. It has been found that using probes with smaller aperture sizes can increase measurement accuracy.

Classification of rat mammary carcinoma with large scale in vivo microwave measurements

Emre Onemli, Sulayman Joof, Cemanur Aydinalp, Nural Pastaci Ozsobaci, Fatma Ates Alkan, Nuray Kepil, Islem Rekik, Ibrahim Akduman, Tuba Yilmaz

Summary: Mammary carcinoma, or breast cancer, is the most common cancer type among women. Researchers are investigating potential new technologies for its diagnosis and treatment. One promising technique is using microwave applications to differentiate between malignant and normal tissues based on their dielectric properties. However, the current measurement technique is not accurate enough, so a new method is needed for confident detection of anomalies. This study proposes a classification method for rat mammary carcinoma based on large-scale in vivo S-11 measurements and corresponding tissue dielectric properties. Using a learning-based linear classifier, the tissues were classified with high accuracy, achieving an 86.92% accuracy when using the most discriminative S-11 measurement. These findings suggest that a narrow band microwave circuitry can support a low-cost automated microwave diagnostic system.

Direct and sulfide mediated treatment of textile effluents in acetate and ethanol-fed upflow sulfidogenic bioreactors

T. Yilmaz, M. Yildiz, C. S. Arzum Yapici, H. U. Annak, D. Ucar

Summary: In this study, sulfidogenic up flow anaerobic reactors were used to treat textile wastewater, and Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R was used as a model dyestuff. The results showed that the reactors could efficiently remove the dye, but an increase in dye concentration resulted in a decrease in sulfate reduction and COD oxidation. Batch reactors demonstrated that biogenic sulfide produced in sulfate reduction could degrade Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R, and the presence of microorganisms increased the reduction rate.

Searching for significant reactions and subprocesses in models of biological systems based on Petri nets

Kaja Gutowska, Piotr Formanowicz

Summary: The primary aim of this research is to propose algorithms for identifying significant reactions and subprocesses within biological system models constructed using classical Petri nets. These solutions enable two analysis methods: importance analysis for identifying critical individual reactions to the model's functionality and occurrence analysis for finding essential subprocesses. The utility of these methods has been demonstrated through analyses of an example model related to the DNA damage response mechanism. It should be noted that these proposed analyses can be applied to any biological phenomenon represented using the Petri net formalism. The presented analysis methods extend classical Petri net-based analyses, enhancing our comprehension of the investigated biological phenomena and aiding in the identification of potential molecular targets for drugs.

LDP-GAN : Generative adversarial networks with local differential privacy for patient medical records synthesis

Hansle Gwon, Imjin Ahn, Yunha Kim, Hee Jun Kang, Hyeram Seo, Heejung Choi, Ha Na Cho, Minkyoung Kim, Jiye Han, Gaeun Kee, Seohyun Park, Kye Hwa Lee, Tae Joon Jun, Young-Hak Kim

Summary: Electronic medical records have potential in advancing healthcare technologies, but privacy issues hinder their full utilization. Deep learning-based generative models can mitigate this problem by creating synthetic data similar to real patient data. However, the risk of data leakage due to malicious attacks poses a challenge to traditional generative models. To address this, we propose a method that employs local differential privacy (LDP) to protect the model from attacks and preserve the privacy of training data, while generating medical data with reasonable performance.
