Objectives To measure the abutment rotation and fracture load of two-piece zirconia implants screwed with three different abutment screw materials. Material and methods Thirty-six zirconia implants with 36 zirconia abutments were distributed into 3 test groups: group G connected with gold screws, group T with titanium screws, and group P with peek screws. In the first part of the study, the rotation angle of the abutments was measured. The second part of the study measured the maximum fracture force of adhesively bonded lithium disilicate crowns after artificial aging and fracture modes were reported. Results In group G, the median rotation angle was 8.0 degrees, in group T 11.6 degrees, and in group P 9.5 degrees. After artificial aging, no screw loosening, crown, abutment, or implant fracture occurred. The median fracture force in group G was 250 N, in group T 263 N, and in group P 196 N. Conclusions Rotation angles and fracture loads of two-piece zirconia implants with gold, titanium, or peek screws showed no significant differences; however, fracture loads showed inferior results for group P.

Digital versus conventional complete dentures: A randomized, controlled, blinded study

Simon Peroz, Ingrid Peroz, Florian Beuer, Guido Sterzenbach, Manja von Stein-Lausnitz

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of digital versus conventional production of complete dentures on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The results showed that the fabrication method had no significant influence on OHRQoL, but digital dentures had shorter production time, less chair time, and less time required for dental laboratory technicians.

Restoration of 1325 teeth with partial-coverage crowns manufactured from high noble metal alloys: a retrospective case series 18.8 years after prosthetic delivery

Philipp Rehm, Hermann Derks, Wilfried Lesaar, Benedikt Christopher Spies, Florian Beuer, Mats Wernfried Heinrich Boese

Summary: The study evaluated the long-term survival and success rates of partial-coverage crowns manufactured from high noble metal alloys, which showed excellent outcomes after an average observation period of 18.8 years. Patients aged between 37 and 51 years had significantly higher success rates with high noble metal alloy partial-coverage crowns.

Effect of additive manufacturing method and build angle on surface characteristics and Candida albicans adhesion to 3D printed denture base polymers

Ping Li, Pablo Kraemer Fernandez, Sebastian Spintzyk, Franziska Schmidt, Florian Beuer, Alexey Unkovskiy

Summary: The surface roughness of 3D printed denture base polymers is significantly influenced by the build angle rather than the additive manufacturing method. However, there is no impact of the AM method and build angle on Candida albicans adhesion to the 3D printed denture bases.

Long-term Survival of Adhesively Luted Post-endodontic Restorations

Maria Bruhnke, Richard Johannes Wierichs, Manja von Stein-Lausnitz, Hendrik Meyer-Luckel, Floriam Beuer, Michael Naumann, Guido Sterzenbach

Summary: This prospective clinical study aimed to investigate the survival of endodontically treated teeth restored with adhesively luted prefabricated dentinlike or rigid posts. The study found that the post system had no significant impact on tooth survival, indicating a low effect size of post material on survival.

Additive Manufacturing of Lithium Disilicate with the LCM Process for Classic and Non-Prep Veneers: Preliminary Technical and Clinical Case Experience

Alexey Unkovskiy, Florian Beuer, Dilan Seda Metin, Daniel Bomze, Jeremias Hey, Franziska Schmidt

Summary: This paper describes the first clinical experience of using LCM lithium disilicate restorations for manufacturing veneers for patients with severe tooth wear. The results show that the applied restorations have good aesthetics and marginal fit. In addition, LCM technology can successfully print non-prep veneers with a thickness of 0.1mm.

Summary: The study shows that color-gradient multilayer zirconia materials and new strength-gradient zirconia materials with similar yttria levels in the basal layers exhibit comparable mechanical properties and are suitable for anterior FDPs.

Forced orthodontic extrusion to restore extensively damaged anterior and premolar teeth as abutments for single-crown restorations: Up to 5-year results from a pilot clinical study

Maria Bruhnke, Florian Beuer, Wernfried Heinrich Boese, Michael Naumann

Summary: The aim of this pilot clinical study was to investigate the survival, frequency, and type of complications of extensively damaged teeth requiring single-crown restorations after forced orthodontic extrusion. The study concluded that forced orthodontic extrusion allowed for the successful restoration of anterior and premolar teeth deemed nonrestorable due to their defect size, with a treatment success rate of 94%.

Implant or Tooth?-A Prospective Clinical Study on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life for Patients with Unrestorable Teeth

Maria Bruhnke, Michael Naumann, Florian Beuer, Insa Herklotz, Mats Wernfried Heinrich Boese, Stefan Neumeyer, Manja von Stein-Lausnitz

Summary: The study showed that there was no significant difference in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) between patients who had severely compromised teeth restored and those who received implant-supported single crown restoration. Although patients in the FOE group exhibited lower OHRQoL in terms of functional limitations and physical disability at one point, overall OHRQoL levels were similar between the two treatment concepts.

Effects of layer thickness and build angle on the microbial adhesion of denture base polymers manufactured by digital light processing

Ping Li, Pablo Kraemer Fernandez, Sebastian Spintzyk, Franziska Schmidt, Jamila Yassine, Florian Beuer, Alexey Unkovskiy

Summary: This study investigated the effects of printing-layer thickness and build angle on the surface characteristics and microbial adhesion of denture base polymers manufactured by digital light processing (DLP). The results showed that both the printing-layer thickness and build angle had significant effects on surface roughness, but only the printing-layer thickness influenced microbial adhesion. Therefore, reducing the printing-layer thickness is critical for producing digital dentures with optimal material properties.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the planned implant position (PIP) with the transferred implant position (TIP) in single-tooth gaps using fully guided implant placements. The results showed that fully guided implant placements provided accurate results, but there were significant vertical deviations that require reevaluation of drilling and insertion depths prior to implant installation.

Summary: Maintaining and restoring teeth with subgingival or subcrestal defect extensions is a common challenge in dental practice. Surgical crown lengthening and orthodontic extrusion have been suggested as treatment options, with the latter being a valid alternative that preserves gingival architecture. This article presents a clinical case series illustrating the use of the Tissue Master Concept for orthodontic extrusion in specific clinical situations.

In vivo full-arch accuracy of intraoral scanners: a narrative review

Marie-Elise Jennes, Maren Soetebeer, Florian Beuer

Summary: This narrative review provides an overview of the in vivo accuracy of full-arch scans performed with currently used intraoral devices and compares different methods for determining in vivo accuracy. The results suggest that there is no scientific consensus on the required accuracy of in vivo full-arch scans, and further studies are needed in this area. Additionally, a valid reference concept that can be scanned both extraorally and intraorally should be developed.
