Summary: Bariatric surgery before kidney transplantation did not show a significant association with allograft or patient survival, but the type of surgery performed varied in its impact on graft survival. Sleeve gastrectomy was found to be associated with better graft survival outcomes in severely obese transplant candidates receiving dialysis.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of TNF-alpha gene polymorphisms on kidney graft survival after transplantation, revealing that the G-allele of the TNF rs3093662 polymorphism in donor kidneys is associated with a higher risk of immediate graft loss and worse long-term kidney graft survival.

Summary: The study found that the Northwestern Medicine Hispanic Kidney Transplant Program successfully increased the likelihood of recipients receiving living donor kidney transplants, particularly at the intervention site with higher fidelity. For Hispanic recipients at intervention site A, the likelihood of receiving LDKTs significantly increased after the intervention, while there was no significant change in the paired control sites.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and rates of cardiovascular and renal complications in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) treated in routine clinical care. The results showed that the prevalence of CKD remained stable at approximately 30% in T2D patients, and CKD was associated with significantly increased rates of complications, especially in those with comorbid heart failure.

Summary: The ability of kidney transplant candidates to travel outside of their usual place of care is influenced by sociodemographic factors, which may worsen access disparities. A certain proportion of candidates choose to receive treatment in neighboring or areas beyond neighboring regions, which is associated with their demographic characteristics. Seeking medical care in a neighbor region increases the likelihood of receiving a deceased donor transplant, while seeking care beyond a neighbor region further increases the possibility. Travelers and non-travelers have similar rates of living donor transplant and waitlist mortality, but patients who travel beyond a neighbor region have slightly lower posttransplant mortality.

Summary: This study reviewed the outcomes of laparoscopic, robotic-assisted living donor nephrectomy (RLDN) and found that it is a safe technique, providing a reasonable alternative to conventional laparoscopic surgery. It is especially suitable for donors with higher body mass index and multiple renal arteries, and also provides a platform for transplant surgeons to develop skills in robotic-assisted surgery for minimal invasive recipient operations.

Summary: This study found that kidney transplant recipients have slower VO2 kinetics compared to healthy controls, but improvements in hemoglobin and peak VO2 seem to occur during the first year after transplantation. VO2 kinetics were significantly associated with indices of cardiorespiratory fitness, suggesting a potential benefit in adding this index of muscular oxidative metabolism to functional evaluation in KTRs.

Summary: Since the mid-20th century, transplantation has undergone rapid development in contemporary medicine. The introduction of minimally invasive surgical techniques in the 1990s significantly improved postoperative care and outcomes. The adoption of robotic surgical technology in the late 1990s opened new horizons for technically demanding surgeries such as transplantation to be completed in a minimally invasive fashion.

Summary: Intestinal transplantation is a treatment option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. This case report describes a patient who underwent temporary desensitization using the donor spleen, which resulted in successful removal of DSAs and a positive post-transplant outcome. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of this strategy.

Summary: This retrospective cohort case-control study aimed to compare the effects of sugammadex and neostigmine in reversing neuromuscular block (NMB) in patients undergoing kidney transplantation. The results showed that the sugammadex group had better postoperative kidney function, lower incidence of severe hypoxemia, shorter post-anesthesia care unit stay, and reduced intensive care unit admissions compared to the neostigmine group.

It was found that liver transplant recipients had a stronger immune response than kidney transplant recipients, which was not solely explained by differences in immunosuppression.
