Adipose tissue stem cells (ASCs), known as multipotent stem cells, are most commonly used in the clinical applications in recent years. Adipose tissues (AT) have the advantage in the harvesting, isolation, and expansion of ASCs, especially an abundant amount of stem cells compared to bone marrow. ASCs can be found in stromal vascular fractions (SVF) which are easily obtained from the dissociation of adipose tissue. Both SVFs and culture-expanded ASCs exhibit the stem cell characteristics such as differentiation into multiple cell types, regeneration, and immune regulators. Therefore, SVFs and ASCs have been researched to evaluate the safety and benefits for human use. In fact, the number of clinical trials on ASCs is going to increase by years; however, most trials are in phase I and II, and lack phase III and IV. This systemic review highlights and updates the process of the harvesting, characteristics, isolation, culture, storage, and application of ASCs, as well as provides further directions on the therapeutic use of ASCs.

Willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine booster doses for adults and their children in Vietnam

Dinh-Toi Chu, Hue Vu Thi, Yen Vy Nguyen Thi, Mai-Anh Nguyen, Nhat-Le Bui, Van Thuan Hoang, Do Hoang Nam, Duc-Lan Do, Van Thai Than, Jaffar A. Al-Tawfiq

Summary: This study examines the willingness of adults and children aged 12-17 in Vietnam to receive COVID-19 booster doses, as well as the factors associated with this willingness. The findings indicate that a high percentage of respondents were willing to receive the booster dose and have their children vaccinated. Higher education levels and previous COVID-19 vaccination were positively associated with this willingness.

Phage engineering and phage-assisted CRISPR-Cas delivery to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens

Khushal Khambhati, Gargi Bhattacharjee, Nisarg Gohil, Gurneet K. Dhanoa, Antonia P. Sagona, Indra Mani, Nhat Le Bui, Dinh-Toi Chu, Janardhan Keshav Karapurkar, Su Hwa Jang, Hee Yong Chung, Rupesh Maurya, Khalid J. Alzahrani, Suresh Ramakrishna, Vijai Singh

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to humanity, and the use of bacteriophages as an alternative to antibiotics has gained interest. CRISPR-Cas9-assisted phage engineering provides a more specific targeting of bacterial pathogens. Techniques to enhance the fitness, specificity, and lytic ability of phages can be used to control infections.

Summary: The obesity epidemic is a global health concern, especially in Asian countries. This review explores the barriers and facilitators of weight management for patients with overweight and obesity in Asia. It reveals that patients face obstacles such as lack of social support, physiological limitations, and low health literacy, while healthcare professionals are unaware of these barriers and focus on patients' motivation and health literacy as obstacles.

The expression and mutation of BRCA1/2 genes in ovarian cancer: a global systematic study

Dinh-Toi Chu, Mai Vu Ngoc Suong, Hue Vu Thi, Thuy-Duong Vu, Manh-Hung Nguyen, Vijai Singh

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the findings on expression and mutation of BRCA1/2 genes in ovarian cancer patients, focusing on mutation detection technology and clinical decisions. The results showed that Next-Generation Sequencing was an effective and affordable technology for detecting BRCA1/2 gene mutations. Other technologies are also being used for mutation detection. The most significant associations of BRCA1/2 gene mutations were age, heredity, and family history, and mutations could improve survival rate and overall survival. However, there is still a lack of sufficient studies for a systematic analysis of the expression of BRCA1/2 gene in ovarian cancer.

Investigation and Screening of Mixed Microalgae Species for Lipase Production and Recovery using Liquid Biphasic Flotation Approach

Doris Ying Ying Tang, Dinh-Toi Chu, Le Thi Nhi-Cong, Sakhon Ratchahat, Fawzi Banat, Kit Wayne Chew, Francesco G. Gentili, Pau Loke Show

Summary: This study is the first to report the existence of lipase in microalgae species from Umea. The lipase in microalgae was extracted using liquid biphasic flotation (LBF) method, and its activity was evaluated using a colorimetric method. The optimized conditions for maximum lipase production were determined, and the recovery yield of the LBF system was found to be 70.3%, with a separation efficiency of 82.0% and a purification factor of 7.45. Microalgae can serve as an ideal candidate for producing lipase, and LBF can be a useful platform for large-scale extraction systems.

Exploring the Potential of Stem Cell-Based Therapy for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery

Dang-Khoa Tran, Thuy Nguyen Thi Phuong, Nhat-Le Bui, Vijai Singh, Qi Hao Looi, Benson Koh, Ungku Mohd Shahrin B. Mohd Zaman, Jhi Biau Foo, Chia-Ching Wu, Pau Loke Show, Dinh-Toi Chu

Summary: Over the past decade, the use of stem cell therapies in aesthetic and plastic surgery has increased due to their potential for self-renewal and multipotent differentiation. Adipose-derived stem cells have been particularly promising for fat grafting and have shown benefits in scar improvement, anti-aging, and skin rejuvenation. However, stem cell-based products have not yet received FDA approval for aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery, and the literature on the efficacy and potential of stem cell-based therapy in this field is limited. This review discusses the current status and recent advances in using stem cells for aesthetic and plastic surgery, highlighting the potential of cell-free therapy and tissue engineering.

Summary: An analysis of 52 million births in 26 countries suggests that there were slight reductions in preterm birth rates during the first to third months of lockdown. However, further research is needed to understand the causal pathways. Preterm birth is a significant cause of infant mortality globally. The study also found variations in stillbirth rates across different countries. The findings highlight the importance of studying the effects of lockdown measures on birth outcomes.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Exploring the Potential of a Genome-Reduced Escherichia coli Strain for Plasmid DNA Production

Thi Thuy Nguyen, Le Minh Bui, Ji-Young Byun, Byung-Kwan Cho, Sun Chang Kim

Summary: This study explores the potential of a genome-reduced Escherichia coli as a host for pDNA production. By removing approximately 23% of the genome and increasing the abundance of NADPH, it was found that pDNA production capabilities were enhanced three-fold compared to the widely employed DH5 ff strain. Furthermore, the genome-reduced strain exhibited heightened sensitivity to various antibiotics, bolstering its potential for industrial pDNA production.

Summary: This study proposes a new discrimination neural network architecture (DiscNN) to tackle the classification problem in the overlapping region of two classes. By learning better discriminative embeddings and using few-shot learning, the model achieves superior performance over existing models including CatBoost, LightGBM, TabNet, VIME, and Scarf.
