The growing numbers of cyclists either injured or killed in accidents caused by trucks have been generally regarded as a safety problem since the 1980s (McCarthy & Gilbert, Accident Analysis & Prevention 28:275-279, 1996). Indeed, in several countries, cyclists killed by a truck represent almost 30% of all cycling fatalities (Pokorny et al., Transportation Research Procedia, 25, 2017). Whilst increasing attention has been paid to this topic by road safety researchers, a scoping review of the current research has been lacking. The aim of this paper is therefore to present a scoping review of the research literature related specifically to truck-bicycle safety, including both safety analysis and measures. Out of the 1,530 documents initially identified in the first phase of this search, 43 were selected for the final analysis. The review outlines the prevailing topics studied and research methods utilized for exploring these topics. Furthermore, findings regarding accident risk factors are summarised, as the information they provide presents us with a key for implementing more efficient safety measures. Additionally, suggestions for future research needs are identified.

Safety Effects of Horizontal Curve Design and Lane and Shoulder Width on Single Motorcycle Accidents in Norway

Sara Kvasnes, Petr Pokorny, Jan Kristian Jensen, Kelly Pitera

Summary: This study examines how design parameters of rural two-lane roads in Norway impact single motorcycle accidents. The research finds that horizontal alignment has a significant effect on these accidents, with segments containing multiple adjacent reverse curves showing high odds for accidents. Furthermore, not fulfilling requirements for adjacent curves leads to even higher odds. Wider lanes were associated with increased odds for accidents, while wider shoulders were linked to decreased odds, although these findings were not statistically significant. Comparing to a study on passenger vehicles, it is shown that horizontal alignment plays a greater role in single motorcycle accidents.

Video observation of encounters between the automated shuttles and other traffic participants along an approach to right-hand priority T-intersection

Petr Pokorny, Belma Skender, Torkel Bjornskau, Marjan P. Hagenzieker

Summary: This study used video recordings to investigate encounters between automated shuttles approaching a T-intersection and other traffic participants. Various risks and behavioral patterns were identified, such as road users misusing the shuttles' defensive style and cyclists being unsure about the shuttles' intentions. Frequent hard stops by the shuttles could pose dangers to passengers and increase the risk of rear-end accidents.

Cycling under the influence of alcohol - Attitudes and perceptions of Norwegian cyclists

Mathias Udheim Vestgard, Petr Pokorny, Gunnhild Beate Antonsen Svaboe, Trude Torset

Summary: Limited knowledge on cycling under the influence of alcohol (CUI) in Norway has necessitated a study to explore its prevalence, attitudes, and reasons for occurrence. Findings revealed that CUI is common in Norway, particularly among young male adults in large cities. Permissive attitudes towards low levels of alcohol influence increase the likelihood of individuals engaging in CUI, especially when influenced by friends.
