Summary: This study established a nomogram model to predict postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in elderly patients undergoing gastrointestinal tumor resection. The model showed good efficacy in predicting POCD risk based on factors such as age, BMI, history of cerebrovascular disease, and other variables. This nomogram model could provide an important reference for the prevention, management, and treatment of POCD.

Summary: The study evaluated the usefulness of perioperative indocyanine green elimination rate (ICG-K) as a predictive factor of posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). Results showed a correlation between ICG-Krem and postoperative ICG-K, indicating moderate accuracy as a predictor of PHLF. However, the clinical relevance of postoperatively measuring ICG-K is limited due to the significant impact of surgical and postoperative factors on PHLF.

Summary: This study compares single injection indocyanine green (ICG) clearances with steady-state ICG clearance (ICG(Cl)) in patients with cirrhosis in order to assess the most accurate estimate for ICG clearance and to relate it to established indicators of liver dysfunction. The results show that the single injection markers correlate closely with ICG(Cl) and established variables of portal hypertension and liver cell bile excretory dysfunction.

Summary: This study established noninvasive models for assessing liver reserve function (LRF) based on liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and evaluated their clinical performance. The new models showed good predictive performance for LRF and could replace the indocyanine green (ICG) clearance test, especially in patients who are unable to undergo ICG testing.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of 156 patients who underwent pancreatic surgery between August 2017 and August 2019 revealed that postoperative serum lactate levels were significantly higher in the infection group compared to the non-infection group, indicating that high serum lactate levels could be a predictor of postoperative intra-abdominal infection after pancreatic resection.

Summary: Minimal-invasive techniques are increasingly used in clinical practice and have contributed to improving postoperative outcomes, yet severe complications remain a significant concern. Through analyzing data from patients undergoing laparoscopic liver resection for primary hepatic malignancies, predictive models were established to identify patients at risk of major complications, both preoperatively and postoperatively.

Summary: Postoperative infectious complications (PIC) can diminish overall survival after liver surgery for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Age, comorbidities, simultaneous resection of primary tumor, and biliary drainage were identified as independent risk factors for the development of PIC. High BMI, postoperative major complications, and 3-/4-MRGN bacteria were independently associated with worse overall survival.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate thermal effects of ceramic and metal implant drills during implant site preparation using a standardized bovine model. It found that drill material and geometry, as well as external irrigation, drilling depth, and drill diameter, significantly impact heat generation. Metal drills showed significantly lower temperatures compared to ceramic drills, with some ceramic drills reaching or exceeding the harmful temperature threshold at 16-mm drilling depths.

Summary: Temporal muscle thickness has been shown to be a potential parameter reflecting sarcopenia and an independent prognostic marker in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) patients. Lower muscle thickness was associated with increased risk of death in PCNSL patients, suggesting its systematic inclusion in further translational and clinical studies to validate its role as a prognostic biomarker.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive accuracy of published risk estimation models for the development of GDM in early pregnancy. Most models showed acceptable discrimination but lacked calibration, with simple biochemical variables like fasting glucose, HbA1c, and triglycerides improving risk prediction. A model incorporating clinical and laboratory parameters demonstrated satisfactory accuracy for further investigations.

Summary: In this study conducted in Austria, a new therapeutic approach using an acid-oxidising solution (AOS) was found to be more effective in promoting wound healing progress and achieving faster healing time compared to standard of care (SOC) wound dressings. Patients treated with AOS showed higher amounts of granulation and re-epithelialisation tissue, faster wound size reduction, and a greater percentage of complete healing of hard-to-heal ulcers. Additionally, AOS was shown to have better tolerability and safety profiles, with fewer adverse events compared to SOC.

Summary: This study discusses the application of the generalised pseudo-values approach in evaluating the impact of allogeneic stem cell transplantation on childhood leukaemia and proposes a new weighted approach for more efficient estimation by adjusting weights in patient cohort grouping and pseudo-value calculation. Extensive computer simulations show that both approaches provide unbiased estimates with satisfactory confidence interval coverage in typical clinical scenarios, with the weighted pseudo-values approach being preferable in situations where donor identification takes longer than usual. Both approaches complement each other in addressing different aspects of the underlying medical question.
