Summary: Homogenization heat treatment is important for removing micro-segregation and undesired phases in wrought superalloys. However, the oxidation behavior of these alloys during the high-temperature homogenization process is rarely studied. This research systematically studied the oxidation film evolution and growth kinetics of a superalloy called Rene 65 during homogenization. The oxide film consisted of an external Cr2O3 layer and internal TiO2 and Al2O3 layers. The growth of the oxide film followed a parabolic law and internal nitridation occurred during oxidation.

Summary: This study evaluates novel central and peripheral inserts in the drilling of Inconel 718 alloy. The central insert is designed for balanced forces, while the peripheral insert is designed for better surface finish. The new inserts show almost three-fold longer tool life compared to a standard drill bit, and improve the number of holes per drill and surface finish. Minimal surface and sub-surface defects were observed, eliminating the need for a post-drilling finishing operation.

Summary: The performance of Ni-based superalloys is affected by the presence of precipitates at grain boundaries, especially in alloys like Rene 41 with high alloying elements. Different types of grain boundary carbides may exist at different temperatures, highlighting the significance of understanding these precipitates for manufacturing high-quality aerospace components.

Summary: This study analyzed the straight dry finish-turning of austempered ductile iron (ADI) using cBN-TiC cutting tools. The focus was on the influence of cutting speed on the tool-chip contact and chip formation processes. Experimental and analytical procedures were used to estimate the tool-chip contact length and stress distribution index. The findings suggest a better approach for selecting feed rate and cutting speed based on the characteristics of the TC contact and chip formation processes.

Summary: This study simulated the continuous milling process of Inconel718 using ABAQUS software, discussing issues such as model establishment, material parameters, and meshing techniques during milling. It was found that the heat generated during milling increased with rotational speed, primarily transferring to chips and workpiece rather than the tool. The temperature distribution on the cutting tool changed in a gradient during milling, with the tool temperature lower than that of the workpiece.

Summary: A three-dimensional single-abrasive grinding model based on the Hill model was developed to account for the anisotropy of nickel-based single-crystal superalloy. The study combined theoretical research and experimental research to investigate the surface morphology, chip morphology, and grinding force of DD5. The research showed that serrated chips could easily occur within a certain range of grinding parameters.

Summary: This work investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of nickel-based single crystal superalloy Rene N5 prepared by laser-directed energy deposition. The study finds that crack-free single-crystal superalloys with a high fraction of low-angle grain boundary can be obtained using a flat-top laser beam. Microstructure observation reveals significantly refined dendrites in the laser-deposited specimens compared to as-cast ones, with the dendrite arm spacing increasing with laser power. The study also demonstrates the uniform distribution of carbides and an increase in microhardness with laser power.
