The Ryukyu Archipelago, located at the southwestern part of Japan, is known as a group of continental islands and harbours many endemic taxa, supposedly reflecting its fairly long isolation from the Eurasian continent, Taiwan and the Japanese main islands. Microhyla okinavensis has been known as an endemic member of the terrestrial fauna of this archipelago. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using samples from nearly all island populations of the species and representative samples of other east Asian congeneric species revealed that M. okinavensis consists of four distinct subclades, of which the Amami, Okinawa and Miyako subclades, though exhibiting distinct genetic differentiations from each other, formed a monophyletic group (clade A). The remaining Yaeyama subclade was exclusively sister to M. mixtura from inland China, forming another monophyletic group (clade B), rendering M. okinavensis in the current definition paraphyletic. These results, as well as estimated dates of divergence from related taxa, indicate that M. okinavensis actually includes more than one distinct species. The results indicate that M. okinavensis and M. mixtura are relict species with disjunct distributions which had been most probably caused by invasion of M. fissipes in intervening areas.

Diet of the American Bullfrog Lithobates catesbeianus Naturalized on Okinawajima, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan

Yasuyuki Nakamura, Atsushi Tominaga

Summary: This study investigates the diet of nonnative American Bullfrog in Ogimi Village of Okinawajima, Ryukyu Archipelago, revealing differences in dietary habits compared to conspecific nonnative populations in mainland Japan and other regions. The diet mainly consists of terrestrial prey, with mollusks and vertebrates being essential prey groups for adults and subadults, while odonates, mollusks, and arachnids are main prey for juveniles. The absence of the frog's favorite prey, nonnative American crayfish, in the study area is likely a contributing factor to these differences.

Structure and movement of the hybrid zone between two divergent lineages of the Japanese newt Cynops pyrrhogaster (Amphibia: Urodela) in central Japan

Atsushi Tominaga, Masafumi Matsui, Masamichi Matsui

Summary: The study explores the genetic relationship between different mitochondrial DNA lineages of the Japanese newt Cynops pyrrhogaster and reveals the presence of a hybrid zone maintained by selection against hybrids and invasion by parental individuals. The two parental lineages are genetically moderately isolated, suggesting they may be biologically independent species. Dispersal rates are higher from the parental lineages to the hybrid populations, and there is evidence of genetic introgression from the northern lineage into the central lineage within the hybrid zone.

Distribution and Genetic Diversity of the Amphibian Chytrid in Japan

Summary: Research on the frog chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has made little progress in Japan since around 2010, but it was pointed out in 2009 that the origin of Bd may be in the East Asian region, including Japan. Many native amphibian species in Japan show resistance to Bd infection.

The emergence of a cryptic lineage and cytonuclear discordance through past hybridization in the Japanese fire-bellied newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster (Amphibia: Urodela)

Summary: Discrepancies in geographic variation patterns between nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA are key to understanding the true evolutionary processes of organisms. Through the study of the genetic differentiation of the northern and Southern-Izu lineages of the Japanese newt, researchers found three genetic groups (Tohoku, N-Kanto, and S-Kanto) in the northern lineage that were not detected by mitochondrial DNA variations. These genetic groups are moderately isolated from each other and have unique genetic characteristics. The evolutionary history estimation suggests that Tohoku diverged from the common ancestor of S-Kanto and S-Izu, and recent hybridization between Tohoku and S-Kanto gave rise to N-Kanto. The origin of N-Kanto through hybridization seems to be relatively young and related to climatic oscillation in the Pleistocene.

Geological history of the land area between Okinawa Jima and Miyako Jima of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and its phylogeographical significance for the terrestrial organisms of these and adjacent islands

Summary: This study focuses on the modern and Late Pleistocene terrestrial fauna of the Miyako Islands in Japan and its adjacent islands, and investigates the origin and distribution patterns of endemic taxa or genetically unique populations. The research suggests that the formation of this phylogeographical pattern is perplexing due to the limited ability for over-sea dispersal of certain lineages. A new hypothesis, the OMSP hypothesis, is proposed to explain the composition of the modern and Late Pleistocene terrestrial vertebrate fauna of these islands.
