Summary: Plastic waste and debris causing pollution from micro- and nano-plastics is a global concern due to their environmental persistence and ecotoxicological impacts. This comprehensive review examines the history and future trends of research on plastic biodegradation. The study found that research on plastics degradation has significantly increased since 1991, with a focus on enzyme-mediated biodegradation of plastics by microorganisms and insects. Future research will explore the biodegradation of plastics associated with the microbiome, metabolome, proteome, and transcriptome of environmental microbes, gut microbes, and host insects.

Summary: The urbanization rate in the member countries of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is over 80% and more research is needed to understand the trends and knowledge structures and to aid policy design. The topics related to sustainable development, environmental regulations, renewable energy, and smart cities have received the most attention in the research. Land use planning, urban growth, and energy consumption have been dominant themes over different time periods. The evolution of research can be attributed to the diffusion of sustainability agenda, the rise of advanced ICT, and the escalating rate of urbanization.
