Two kinds of bio-resourced reactive diluents have been synthesized from linseed oil. The prepared epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and the cyclocarbonated linseed oil (CLO) were separately blended with a petroleum-based tetra-functional epoxy resin (TGDDM) to improve its processability and to overcome the brittleness of the thermoset network therefrom. The linseed oil modifications were spectrally established, and processability improvement of the resin blends was rheologically confirmed. The curing of samples was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, and their mechanical properties (ie, tensile, flexural, fracture toughness, and adhesion) were investigated as well. Scanning electron microscopy images were obtained to reconfirm the toughness improvement of the modified thermosets. In contrast of the epoxidized soybean oil (ie, the most conventionally studied bio-based reactive diluent), ELO and CLO had no negative effects on the thermoset material characteristics. They improved properties such as tensile strength (up to 43.2 MPa), fracture toughness (1.1 MPa m(1/2)), and peel-adhesion strength (4.5 N/25 mm). It was concluded that ELO and CLO were efficient reactive diluents to be used in formulations of polymer composites, surface coatings, and structural adhesives based on epoxy resins.

Summary: In this study, novel IA-GMA and IA-ECH materials were synthesized by modifying itaconic acid (IA), and used for the preparation of superabsorbent polymers (SAP). IA-GMA acted as an internal crosslinker to enhance water absorbency of SAP, while IA-ECH served as an external crosslinker to improve gel strength and water absorption capacity.

Summary: This study focuses on the recycling of fine acrylate-based Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) particles using silicone-based coupling agents. The recycled SAP particles exhibit no deterioration in properties and even show increased gel strength under stress. The analysis reveals a well-attached porous structure of the recycled SAP particles, maintaining their integrity.

Summary: Novel wound dressings with antibacterial activity were fabricated using the coating technique, and microwave techniques were employed to enhance fibroblast cell viability. Physical, mechanical, and antibacterial tests showed that the coated nonwoven with layers of hydrogels possessed the desired strength, breathability, flexibility, and wettability. The results suggest that the fabricated structures have potential applications in wound dressing.

Roghayeh Khaleghi Qusheh Bolagh, Ali Salimi, Kourosh Kabiri, Alireza Pourali

Summary: In this study, two types of aromatic monomers with high refractive index (RI) were developed and combined with a newly synthesized oligomer to develop a UV-curing adhesive. The results showed that the composition containing the oligomer had improved thermal stability and high glass transition temperature. The adhesion strength was also positively affected, and the refractive index value was suitable for most applications in optoelectronics.

Summary: In this study, a reactive diluent (D-1) derived from phthalic acid was synthesized to replace styrene in epoxy acrylate resin. The diluent D-1 showed better performance in reducing the viscosity of the resin compared to deactivated diluent D-p and styrene. It also improved the rheological properties, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the resin.

Summary: Dedifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from a functional phenotype to an inverse synthetic phenotype is an important symptom of cardiovascular disorders. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) plays a crucial role in regulating the differentiation and maintenance of VSMCs' contractile gene expression. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in this process are not well understood. This study used a novel in vitro co-culture method to investigate the effects of sympathetic neurons on VSMCs differentiation and found that sympathetic innervation promotes VSMCs' contractile gene expression and functional phenotype maintenance.

Summary: The addition of glycidoxy propyl POSS (GPOSS) nanoparticles and alumina microparticles into a two-part epoxy adhesive resulted in improved glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal stability, and adhesion strength. The dispersion of the fillers in the adhesive samples was characterized, showing weaker dispersion for highly loaded alumina and/or GPOSS filled compositions. DSC thermograms revealed lower heat of cure and higher onset cure temperatures in all compositions compared to neat epoxy resin.
