To what extent are the antimalarial markets in African countries ready for a transition to triple artemisinin-based combination therapies?

Freek de Haan, Oladimeji Akeem Bolarinwa, Rosemonde Guissou, Fatoumata Tou, Paulina Tindana, Wouter P. C. Boon, Ellen H. M. Moors, Phaik Yeong Cheah, Mehul Dhorda, Arjen M. Dondorp, Jean Bosco Ouedraogo, Olugbenga A. Mokuolu, Chanaki Amaratunga

Summary: The market readiness for Triple artemisinin-based combination therapies (TACTs) in Nigeria and Burkina Faso depends on support from the WHO and international funders, as well as the ability to integrate TACTs into existing regulatory and distribution systems. Challenges are expected in the private sector due to patient demand and profit motives. Further studies are needed to inform decision makers about the implications of transitioning to TACTs in African countries.

Market Formation in a Global Health Transition

Freek de Haan, Ellen H. M. Moors, Arjen M. Dondorp, Wouter P. C. Boon

Summary: This article focuses on market formation in the global health transition caused by drug-resistant malaria, investigating the formation of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACT) markets in the Greater Mekong Subregion. It highlights the roles of public institutes, academia, and partnerships in early innovation system development and how transnational organizations created a supportive global landscape for ACT development. The study shows how these advancements led to the establishment of public-sector and private-sector ACT markets in the region at global, national, and local scales.

Servitisation on consumer markets: entry and strategy in Dutch private lease markets

Taneli Vaskelainen, Karla Munzel, Wouter Boon, Koen Frenken

Summary: This article examines the strategies and order of entry for established B2B lease companies to enter the B2C private leasing and carsharing markets. The study reveals that companies' knowledge of opportunities, position in the value chain, and resources significantly impact their ability to be pioneers, early followers, or late entrants. The findings also show that manufacturing incumbent companies are not actively exploiting opportunities in private leasing, while leasing companies are developing capabilities for private leasing on their own and partnering with others for carsharing services.

Toward Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Long-Term Care: A Scoping Review on Practical Approaches

Dirk R. M. Lukkien, Henk Herman Nap, Hendrik P. Buimer, Alexander Peine, Wouter P. C. Boon, Johannes C. F. Ket, Mirella M. N. Minkman, Ellen H. M. Moors

Summary: This scoping review investigates the design and implementation of responsible AI innovation in long-term care for older adults. The study found that while there are measures and recommendations addressing responsible AI innovation, there is limited empirical evidence on how it is addressed in context. The study recommends expanding empirical research and developing specific flexible guidance frameworks for responsible AI innovation.

A Research Pathway Model for evaluating the implementation of practice-based research: The case of self-management health innovations

Wilke van Beest, Wouter P. C. Boon, Daan Andriessen, Harald Pol, Gerrita van der Veen, Ellen H. M. Moors

Summary: This study examines the evaluation of research pathways for self-management health innovations from discovery to implementation in practice-based research settings. The development of a Research Pathway Model enables researchers to monitor the incremental work required for successful innovation implementation. The exploration of solutions in real-life environments appears to be crucial for the successful adoption of self-management health innovations.

Social pharmaceutical innovation and alternative forms of research, development and deployment for drugs for rare diseases

Conor M. W. Douglas, Fernando Aith, Wouter Boon, Marina de Neiva Borba, Liliana Doganova, Shir Grunebaum, Rob Hagendijk, Larry Lynd, Alexandre Mallard, Faisal Ali Mohamed, Ellen Moors, Claudio Cordovil Oliveira, Florence Paterson, Vanessa Scanga, Julino Soares, Vololona Raberharisoa, Tineke Kleinhout-Vliek

Summary: Rare diseases pose challenges that cannot be addressed by traditional pharmaceutical innovation. We need to rethink innovation and provide more alternative pathways, such as social pharmaceutical innovation. As an interdisciplinary research team, we aim to contribute to the development of social pharmaceutical innovation and provide comparative and evaluative value to these initiatives.

Translatability of preclinical to early clinical tolerable and pharmacologically active dose ranges for central nervous system active drugs

Guilherme S. Ferreira, Francis M. Dijkstra, Desiree H. Veening-Griffioen, Wouter P. C. Boon, Huub Schellekens, Ellen H. M. Moors, Peter J. K. van Meer, Frederik E. Stuurman, Joop M. A. van Gerven

Summary: The primary aim of this study was to determine the translatability of preclinical to early clinical dose ranges for CNS active drugs. Investigator's Brochures (IBs) were examined to assess reporting quality. The quality of IBs was assessed based on the animal model rationale, completeness of PK results, and internal validity of preclinical evidence. The IB-derisk tool was used to generate data overviews. Overall, the reporting quality in IBs was found to be poor, with about a third of studies not exploring the entire concentration-effect curve. C-max was the most accurate predictor of single-dose tolerability ranges, while HED and AUC were the best predictors of pharmacologically active ranges. The study suggests that preclinical data with the IB-derisk tool can reasonably predict tolerable and pharmacologically active doses in healthy volunteers, and improving reporting standards in IBs can enhance the translatability of preclinical studies.

Replacing meat, an easy feat? The role of strategic categorizing in the rise of meat substitutes

Marjolein J. Hoogstraaten, Koen Frenken, Taneli Vaskelainen, Wouter P. C. Boon

Summary: This study examines categories and strategies of categorization in the shift towards sustainable diets. The research focuses on the emergence of meat substitutes and views the meat substitute category as a hybrid one that targets vegetarian/vegan diets while replacing meat. The category is characterized by its negative definition, explicitly indicating the product it is intended to substitute. The ambiguous nature of this category poses challenges for producers in terms of innovation. The study investigates the strategies employed by nine Dutch meat substitute producers, revealing that most of them prioritize meat resemblance in their innovation strategies, conforming to the dominant practices of meat production and consumption. However, the study also demonstrates that the hybrid and negatively defined nature of the meat substitute category creates opportunities for more radical innovations that can potentially transform the entire regime in the long run.

Impact of the new European Union In Vitro Diagnostics Regulation on the practice of hospital diagnostic laboratories

Audrey M. M. Hermans, Marc Maliepaard, Wouter P. C. Boon, Anna M. G. Pasmooij

Summary: The study investigated the current use of companion diagnostics (CDx) in hospital practice in the Netherlands, focusing on factors influencing the choice between in-house or commercial CDx. Factors such as costs, convenience, complexity of application, and compatibility with existing workflows were found to play key roles. Concerns were raised about potential increased costs, administrative work, and decreased quality with the introduction of the In Vitro Diagnostics Regulation 2017/746 (IVDR).

Tradition, Not Science, Is the Basis of Animal Model Selection in Translational and Applied Research

Desiree H. Veening-Griffioen, Guilherme S. Ferreira, Wouter P. C. Boon, Christine C. Gispen-de Wied, Huub Schellekens, Ellen H. M. Moors, Peter J. K. van Meer

Summary: The study found that the current selection of a specific animal model is more based on tradition rather than its potential predictive value for clinical outcome. In the future, there should be a more systematic and transparent approach to selecting animal models in order to reduce the likelihood of poorly translatable research outcomes.
