A reproducible stationary high-confinement regime with small edge-localized modes (ELMs) has been achieved recently in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, which has a metal wall and low plasma rotation as projected for a fusion reactor. We have uncovered that this small ELM regime is enabled by a wide edge transport barrier (pedestal) with a low density gradient and a high density ratio between the pedestal foot and top. Nonlinear simulations reveal, for the first time, that the underlying mechanism for the observed small ELM crashes is the upper movement of the peeling boundary induced by an initial radially localized collapse in the pedestal, which stops the growth of instabilities and further collapse of the pedestal, thus providing a physics basis for mitigating ELMs in future steady-state fusion reactors.

Impact of plasma density/collisionality on divertor heat flux width

N. M. Li, X. Q. Xu, R. J. Goldston, J. Z. Sun, D. Z. Wang

Summary: Based on both ASDEX-Upgrade (AUG) data and the generalized HD (GHD) model, it is shown that the scrape-off width broadens as the density/collisionality increases. Through a series of BOUT++ transport simulations, it is found that the divertor heat flux width can be broadened due to the transition of the SOL residence time as the collisionality/density increases, even in the drift dominated regime. Additionally, as the density increases, the radial electric field (E-r) well shallows, potentially weakening E-r x B flow shear stabilization of turbulence at high density.

Edge localized mode characteristics and divertor heat flux during stationary and transient phase for CFETR hybrid scenario

Zeyu Li, Yiren Zhu, Guoliang Xu, V. S. Chan, Xueqiao Xu, Jiale Chen, Rui Ding, Tianyang Xia, Xiang Jian, Yunpeng Zou, Chijie Xiao, Xiaogang Wang

Summary: This study investigates the ELM behavior, stationary and transient heat flux during the ELM crash phase for the CFETR 1 GW hybrid mode operation scenario. The research shows that the energy loss of ELM in this scenario is smaller compared to a Type-I ELM, and parametric analysis sheds light on the physics of a grassy ELM regime. Investigating the transient heat flux and its impact on the divertor target, the study concludes that external mitigation methods may be needed for the steady state operation of CFETR.

The role of edge plasma parameters in H-mode density limit on the JET-ILW

H. J. Sun, R. J. Goldston, A. Huber, X. Q. Xu, J. Flanagan, D. C. McDonald, E. de la Luna, M. Maslov, J. R. Harrison, F. Militello, J. Fessey, S. Cramp

Summary: A study of JET H-mode plasma with Be/W ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) shows that reaching the edge MHD ballooning limit leads to confinement degradation. JET-ILW plasmas have a higher H-mode density limit than JET-C, and a new estimator for JET radial E (r, min) has been derived. The presence of E x B shear in the near SOL plays a role in sustaining a marginal phase in JET-ILW, leading to higher HDL than in JET-C.

Summary: The study used the BOUT++ model to simulate the distribution and evolution of transient heat flux on HL-2A during ELM bursts, finding that the heat flux increases with temperature and density. The results consistently show that the heat flux q(parallel to e) is proportional to ne0,SEPTe0,SEP32.

Summary: This study introduces a novel distributed union-find algorithm with asynchronous parallelism and k-d tree based load balancing for scalable visualization and analysis of scientific data. The research demonstrates that global synchronizations in existing distributed union-find can be eliminated without changing final results, allowing overlapped communications and computations for scalable processing. Additionally, the algorithm uses k-d tree decomposition to redistribute inputs and improve workload balancing.

Ben Zhu, Menglong Zhao, Harsh Bhatia, Xue-qiao Xu, Peer-Timo Bremer, William Meyer, Nami Li, Thomas Rognlien

Summary: We propose a data-driven surrogate model based on machine learning to predict divertor plasma detachment using the concept of latent feature space. The results show that our surrogate model can accurately predict detachment with a significant speed-up, indicating its potential for integrated tokamak design and plasma control.
