Objective To investigate whether the risk of interstitial cystitis increases among the patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods This was a nationwide population-based cohort study. Data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Women aged >18 years newly diagnosed as systemic lupus erythematosus during 2001-2008 were identified as the control group. The comparison included individuals randomly selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database in the year of 2000, by matching one systemic lupus erythematosus participant with eight non-systemic lupus erythematosus participants with sex and age. These participants were followed up until being diagnosed as interstitial cystitis, or the end of 2011. Women diagnosed with lupus cystitis were excluded from this study. Results This study included 7240 women with systemic lupus erythematosus and 57 920 women without systemic lupus erythematosus as controls. The incidence rate of interstitial cystitis was significantly higher in the systemic lupus erythematosus group, with an incidence rate ratio of 2.26 (95% confidence interval 1.57-3.27, P < 0.0001). After adjustment, the risk increased by 2.45-fold (adjusted hazard ratio 2.45, 95% confidence interval 1.57-3.27, P < 0.05). Age as a factor increases incidence rate ratios among all age groups, 2.12-, 3.32- and 4.65-fold. Age >= 45 years had an increased adjusted hazard ratio (2.07, 95% confidence interval 1.37-3.13, P < 0.05). Comorbidities, for example, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and renal disease, were insignificant. Conclusions This is the first population-based cohort study showing a higher incidence of interstitial cystitis among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. These findings support the concordance of interstitial cystitis with autoimmune diseases, and the temporal relationship to develop interstitial cystitis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Yao-Tsung Lin, Li-Kai Wang, Kuo-Chuan Hung, Chia-Yu Chang, Li-Ching Wu, Chung-Han Ho, Jen-Yin Chen

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence and predictors of insufficient plasma vitamin C among adults in a subtropical region. It found that male gender, high body mass index, age 20-39, and winter/spring were independent predictors of insufficient vitamin C. Subjects with insufficient vitamin C had lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and elevated levels of triglyceride, homocysteine, and hs-CRP. This highlights the public health issue of insufficient plasma vitamin C.

Emerging Non-Antibiotic Options Targeting Uropathogenic Mechanisms for Recurrent Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection

Yu-Chen Chen, Wei-Chia Lee, Yao-Chi Chuang

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections in healthcare settings, with a high rate of recurrence. Conventional antibiotic management may lead to multidrug-resistant uropathogens. Therefore, alternative non-antibiotic solutions targeting the pathogenicity of UTIs and inadequate host defenses are being explored.

Zinc Finger Protein 90 Knockdown Promotes Cisplatin Sensitivity via Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway in Ovarian Cancer Cell

Ching-Hu Wu, Chien-Wei Feng, Chiu-Lin Wang, Zhi-Hong Wen, Cheng-Yu Long, Feng-Hsiang Tang

Summary: Our data showed that cisplatin treatment induces production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that regulate apoptotic protein expression and stimulate anti-oxidative signal, inhibiting cell migration. The intervention of Zfp90 enhanced apoptosis pathway and inhibited migrative pathway, thus regulating the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin. This study suggests that loss of Zfp90 function promotes cisplatin sensitization in ovarian cancer cells through the regulation of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, enhancing cell apoptosis and inhibiting migration.

Platelet Lysate Therapy Attenuates Hypoxia Induced Apoptosis in Human Uroepithelial SV-HUC-1 Cells through Regulating the Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial-Mediated Intrinsic Apoptotic Pathway

Zong-Sheng Wu, Hou-Lun Luo, Yao-Chi Chuang, Wei-Chia Lee, Hung-Jen Wang, Michael B. Chancellor

Summary: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been shown to alleviate symptoms of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) by regulating inflammatory processes and promoting tissue repair. This study found that PRP could protect the urothelium during ischemia/hypoxia by decreasing apoptosis through modulating the expression of HIF1 alpha, the mitochondria-mediated intrinsic apoptotic pathway, and reducing ROS.

The Neuroprotective Effect of Isotetrandrine on Parkinson's Disease via Anti-Inflammation and Antiapoptosis In Vitro and In Vivo

Ching-Hu Wu, Kun-Ling Lin, Cheng-Yu Long, Chien-Wei Feng

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a highly influential disease worldwide, and current medications only provide relief for symptoms without slowing down disease progression. However, the plant-derived compound isotetrandrine (ITD) has been found to possess neuroprotective activity both in vitro and in vivo. ITD inhibits inflammatory-related protein and mRNA expression, improves locomotor deficiency, and reduces apoptosis in zebrafish models of PD. The neuroprotective effects of ITD may be mediated through anti-neuroinflammation and antiapoptosis pathways involving PI3K, ERK, and HO-1.

Low-Energy Shock Wave Suppresses Prostatic Pain and Inflammation by Modulating Mitochondrial Dynamics Regulators on a Carrageenan-Induced Prostatitis Model in Rats

Zong-Sheng Wu, Hung-Jen Wang, Wei-Chia Lee, Hou Lun Luo, Tsu-Kung Lin, Yao-Chi Chuang

Summary: Low-energy shock wave (LESW) treatment has therapeutic effects on chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), and this study investigated its mechanism of action. In a rat model of carrageenan-induced prostatitis, LESW treatment suppressed prostatic pain, inflammatory reaction, and expression of sensory molecules. These findings suggest a link between the neuroinflammatory effects of LESW in CP/CPPS and imbalances in mitochondrial dynamics in the prostate.
