Genetic and systemic toxicity induced by silver and copper oxide nanoparticles, and their mixture in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)

Unanticipated increase in the use of silver (Ag) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) due to their antimicrobial properties is eliciting environmental health concern because of their coexistence in the aquatic environment. Therefore, we investigated the genetic and systemic toxicity of the individual NPs and their mixture (1:1) using the piscine micronucleus (MN) assay, haematological, histopathological (skin, gills and liver) and hepatic oxidative stress analyses [malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)] in the African mud catfish, Clarias gariepinus. The fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations (6.25-100.00 mg/L) of each NP and their mixture for 28 days. Both NPs and their mixture induced significant (p < 0.05) increase in MN frequency and other nuclear abnormalities. There was significant decrease in haemoglobin concentration, red and white blood cell counts. Histopathological lesions observed include epidermal skin cells and gill lamellae hyperplasia and necrosis of hepatocytes. The levels of MDA, GSH and activities of SOD and CAT were impacted in C. gariepinus liver following the exposure to the NPs and their mixture. Interaction factor analysis of data indicates antagonistic genotoxicity and oxidative damage of the NPs mixture. These results suggest cytogenotoxic effects of Ag NPs, CuO NPs and their mixture via oxidative stress in Clarias gariepinus.

Bulk Defects and Hydrogenation Kinetics in Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells With Fired Passivating Contacts

Summary: This article investigates the effect of various processing steps during the fabrication of c-Si/SiOx/SiCx fired passivating contacts on the silicon bulk lifetime, as well as the kinetics of defect deactivation by hydrogenation. The results show a faster passivation of the surface and a slower passivation of shallow bulk defects. The kinetics of the hydrogenation process is limited by the available hydrogen supply at the c-Si/SiOx interface, rather than by diffusion within the bulk of the wafer.

Human body burden of bisphenol A: a case study of lactating mothers in Florianopolis, Brazil

Summary: This study aimed to determine the concentration of bisphenol A (BPA) in the colostrum of post-partum women in South Brazil. The results showed a high concentration of BPA in all breast milk samples, which might be due to the consumption of foods packaged in plastic packaging. This has significant public health implications, as the high concentration of BPA could lead to serious health problems in both the lactating mothers and the babies fed with BPA-contaminated breast milk.

Summary: All-solid-state lithium batteries are promising for energy storage, but suffer from performance degradation during cycling. This study shows that thermal recovery can recrystallize the amorphized interface, restoring the cell performance. Detailed analysis and thermodynamic modeling provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural and chemical changes. Through thermal recovery, more than 80% of the initial storage capacity can be recovered, offering potential for cost-efficient recycling of ceramic all-solid-state batteries.

Correlative high-resolution imaging of hydrogen in Mg2Ni hydrogen storage thin films

Summary: In this study, high-resolution imaging of hydrogen and deuterium within Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 hydrogen storage thin films was achieved using a self-developed secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) system attached to a commercially available dual-beam focused ion beam - scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) instrument. A novel approach using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) was demonstrated to measure the size, shape, and distribution of the hydride phase in partially transformed films. The combination of these techniques provides new insights on hydride nucleation and growth within the Mg2NiHx system. Additionally, the efficacy of tracking deuterium as a hydrogen analog for SIMS imaging in high-vacuum chambers was demonstrated.

Scanning Transmission Ion Microscopy Time-of-Flight Spectroscopy Using 20 keV Helium Ions

Summary: Scanning transmission ion microscopy imaging was performed using a delay-line detector to record the impact position and arrival time of transmitted ions or neutrals. The energy loss after transmission through the sample was calculated based on arrival time measurements. The resulting 5D dataset was analyzed to produce energy spectra or images, which demonstrated the capability of identifying regions of identical materials in the sample plane. The experiment also validated the behavior of energy loss with respect to scattering angle and showcased the potential of keV helium ions in energy loss imaging experiments.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers and can have negative impacts on reproductive functions. However, existing human biomonitoring studies on internal exposure to phthalates in Europe differ in many aspects, making comparability challenging. The HBM4EU initiative gathered data from 29 studies across Europe to describe the general population's exposure to phthalates from 2005 to 2019. This study is an important step towards making internal exposures to phthalates comparable across countries and provides suggestions for improved harmonization in future studies.

Cellular toxicity and DNA damage induced by Newbouldia laevis used for male infertility treatment in prokaryotic and eukaryotic models

Summary: Leaves of Newbouldia laevis are commonly used to address infertility and childbirth issues in Africa, but little is known about their DNA damaging potential. This study examined the cytogenotoxic effects of the plant's aqueous extract using prokaryotic and eukaryotic models. The extract was found to be mutagenic and cytotoxic, inhibiting root growth and inducing chromosomal aberrations. The presence of specific volatile organic compounds and alkaloids in the extract likely contributed to its cytogenotoxicity.

Interface passivation for 31.25%-efficient perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells

Summary: Silicon solar cells are reaching their efficiency limit of 29%, but this can be surpassed by using advanced device structures. In this study, we created a tandem device with a perovskite layer on top of a silicon bottom cell to enhance the photocurrent. By regulating the perovskite crystallization process and reducing recombination losses, we achieved a certified power conversion efficiency of 31.25% with an active area of 1.17 square centimeters.

Summary: This study evaluated the exposure levels of children and women in Europe over time. The results showed that exposure levels to chemicals restricted at EU level visually decreased, while the levels for some of their substitutes increased. These findings are important for policy efficacy monitoring and highlight the role of HBM in supporting policies.
