Summary: This study found that individuals with CPTSD had higher somatisation severity compared to those with PTSD, and somatisation was associated with core PTSD symptoms rather than CPTSD characteristic disturbances in self-organization.

Summary: The 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) recognizes complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) as a separate diagnosis from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is defined by six sets of symptoms, three shared with PTSD and three representing disturbances in self-organization. While there is evidence supporting ICD-11 CPTSD, an explanatory theory for its development is still lacking.

Summary: This study explored the prevalence of PTSD and CPTSD, as well as associated risk factors and trauma disclosure behaviors in a population-based Lithuanian sample. The results indicated that lifetime trauma exposure, sexual assault, and assault with a weapon were significant predictors for both PTSD and CPTSD, with CPTSD group showing greater reluctance to disclose trauma and stronger emotional reactions. The study also validated the Lithuanian ITQ version as a reliable measure for screening PTSD and CPTSD in the general population.

Summary: This study explored the symptom connections of PTSD and CPTSD across samples from three African countries using network analysis, revealing a multidimensional-hierarchical structure of CPTSD. The findings were consistent across the countries, supporting the ICD-11 model of PTSD and CPTSD.

Summary: ICD-11 Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a relatively new condition, and there is limited evidence for its treatment. Before CPTSD was recognized as a separate trauma condition, people were often diagnosed with multiple co-morbid conditions and received treatments that were not standardized. In this paper, a new flexible treatment approach called Enhanced Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (ESTAIR) is presented for CPTSD and its symptoms. Future research directions are discussed.

Summary: This study assessed the factorial validity and internal reliability of the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) in a nationally representative sample in Ireland, determined the prevalence rates of ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD, identified correlates of CPTSD symptoms, and examined the relationship between CPTSD symptoms and suicide risk. The ITQ showed reliable and valid scores, with 11.2% of individuals meeting criteria for ICD-11 PTSD or CPTSD. Higher exposure to traumatic events, increased loneliness, and more sleep problems predicted CPTSD symptoms, and symptoms of negative self-concept were strongly associated with suicidality.

Summary: ICD-11 Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a disorder with six symptom clusters. Dissociation is not listed as a unique symptom cluster in ICD-11 CPTSD. A study on a nationally representative sample of adults found that CPTSD symptoms can occur without dissociative experiences, but the combination of CPTSD symptoms and dissociation leads to the poorest mental health and highest levels of functional impairment.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine risk factors and comorbidities of ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD in a large sample of previously deployed, treatment-seeking soldiers and veterans. The results showed that CPTSD is more common and debilitating compared to PTSD, and risk factors for CPTSD include exposure to warfare or combat, longer duration since the traumatic event, and being single.

Summary: Exposure to childhood maltreatment increases the risk of psychiatric morbidity in youths. The Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnosis captures the heterogeneity and complexity of clinical outcomes observed in youths exposed to childhood maltreatment. This study explores CPTSD symptomatology and its association with clinical outcomes, considering the impact of CM subtypes and age of exposure.

Summary: This study found that UK military veterans with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) experience barriers in accessing and engaging with mental health services, with certain CPTSD symptoms potentially acting as deterrents to help-seeking. Further exploration is needed to ensure that those with CPTSD can access appropriate care in future help-seeking initiatives.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with ICD-11 post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD), and examine the psychiatric burden associated with these disorders. The prevalence of CPTSD was found to be higher than PTSD in individuals with psychiatric disorders, and it was associated with interpersonal trauma, personality disorders, and lower rates of bipolar disorder. Individuals with CPTSD experienced higher levels of anxiety and depression symptoms, and lower psychological wellbeing compared to those with PTSD or neither disorder. The findings highlight the importance of routine screening for trauma histories and PTSD/CPTSD in clinical settings, and the need for interventions to address CPTSD.

Summary: The study found that CPTSD was more prevalent than PTSD, and high levels of fear were associated with re-experiencing, avoidance, sense of threat, and relationship disturbances. Low levels of resilience and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies were related to affective dysregulation, negative self-concept, and relationship disturbances. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies differentiated between meeting CPTSD and PTSD criteria in women survivors of IPV.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of ICD-11 disorders associated with stress (including PTSD and CPTSD), the nature of interpersonal trauma exposure, and the relationship between cumulative trauma exposure and CPTSD via self-compassion in a sample of homeless adults in Ireland. The findings revealed a high prevalence of CPTSD in the sample, while PTSD was less common. Only lifetime sexual abuse was significantly associated with CPTSD. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of understanding CPTSD in homeless populations and the potential role of self-compassion in interventions.
