The knowledge on the presence of pharmaceutical compounds, and possible risks, in coastal and marine systems is still limited. This study represents the first attempt at monitoring psychoactive pharmaceuticals (PaPs) (benzodiazepines and anxiolytics) and illicit drugs (IDs) in the Rias Baixas coastal area of Northwestern Spain, an area of economic and ecological relevance, leader in shellfish production. Fourteen PaPs and 9 IDs were detected in the water samples with venlafaxine (59%), benzoylecgonine (40%), EDDP (40%), and citalopram (36%) showing the highest detection frequencies. The highest concentrations were measured for venlafaxine (291 ng L-1), benzoylecgonine (142 ng L-1), lorazepam (95.9 ng L-1), and citalopram (92.5 ng L-1). Risk assessment, based on hazard quotients suggested that venlafaxine, citalopram, sertraline, and EDDP were present in concentrations potentially able to cause chronic effects in exposed organisms. Based on the results obtained further monitoring of venlafaxine, citalopram, and EDDP in coastal waters is recommended. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics induces an anxiolytic-like effect, changes in antipredator defensive response, and DNA damage in Swiss mice

Abraao Tiago Batista Guimaraes, Italo Nascimento Freitas, Nabisab Mujawar Mubarak, Md Mostafizur Rahman, Fernando Postalli Rodrigues, Aline Sueli de Lima Rodrigues, Damia Barcelo, Abu Reza Md Towfiqul Islam, Guilherme Malafaia

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of exposure to poly-styrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) on the behavior, brain antioxidant activity, and DNA damage in male Swiss mice. It was found that mice exposed to PS NPs exhibited anxiolytic-like behavior and altered defensive response when confronted with a predator. Additionally, the exposure to PS NPs led to reduced brain antioxidant activity and increased DNA damage. These findings highlight the potential impact of PS NPs on mammals and underscore the ecotoxicological risks associated with their dispersion in natural environments.

Summary: Analytical methods based on QuEChERS and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry were developed for the determination of 42 polar and semi-polar pesticides in three representative vegetable matrices, and validated for their linearity, sensitivity, true-ness, and precision. The methods showed good recovery rates and low limits of detection, and were successfully applied to analyze real samples.

Microplastics as an underestimated emerging contaminant in solid organic waste and their biological products: Occurrence, fate and ecological risks

Yanting Zhou, Xiuna Ren, To-Hung Tsui, Damia Barcelo, Quan Wang, Zengqiang Zhang, Yongzhen Ding

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) have been widely found in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric ecosystems as an emerging pollutant. Recently, it has been discovered that solid organic waste is also an important source of MPs and has significant impacts on ecosystems. This study reviews the occurrence and characteristics of MPs in solid organic waste and organic fertilizers, as well as their influence on biological treatments and degradation characteristics.

Insight of chemical environmental risk and its management from the vinyl chloride accident

Bin Wang, Liping Heng, Qian Sui, Zheng Peng, Xuezhi Xiao, Minghui Zheng, Jianxin Hu, Heidelore Fiedler, Damia Barcelo, Gang Yu

Summary: This paper analyzes the combustion of vinyl chloride (VC) in the train derailment accident in Ohio, USA in 2023. It discusses the appropriateness of VC combustion in the emergency response, the concept of controlled combustion, the potential environmental risks of VC and combustion by-products, and the follow-up work. The accident has caused environmental and health risks, necessitating a comprehensive environmental risk assessment, remediation of affected areas, and proper treatment of hazardous waste. The accident also highlights the need to bridge the gap between chemical safety management and environmental risk management.

Enantioselective uptake, translocation, and biotransformation of pydiflumetofen in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.): Insights from chiral profiling and molecular simulation

Zhen Wang, Yanhong Li, Yuting Tan, Rui Li, Liangliang Zhou, Zongzhe He, Damia Barcelo, Haiyan Shi, Minghua Wang

Summary: In this study, the uptake, translocation, and biotransformation of the fungicide PYD by wheat were investigated at a chiral level. The results showed that the residue concentration of R-PYD in wheat was higher than that of S-PYD, and R-PYD was more easily accumulating in roots and translocating to shoots. Additionally, 9 metabolites of PYD were detected qualitatively in wheat roots or shoots.

Prevalence of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in the urban wastewater treatment systems of Dehradun, India: Daunting presence of Estrone

Rahul Silori, Manish Kumar, Durga Madhab Mahapatra, Pinakshi Biswas, Bhanu Prakash Vellanki, Jurgen Mahlknecht, Syed Mohammad Tauseef, Damia Barcelo

Summary: This study investigates the occurrences and seasonal variations of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Dehradun, India. The results show higher concentrations of estrone compared to triclosan in the influent waters of the WWTPs. The study highlights the limitation of WWTPs in treating and assimilating EDCs, leading to their accumulation in effluents and posing a significant threat to nearby aquatic ecosystems, human health, and the ecological balance of the region.

Dicamba Degradation Using a Low-Cost Chlorine/Ferrous-Based AOP: ANN-PSO Model Development, Intermediate Identification, and Toxicity Assessment Using Microalgae

Samira Bouizzar, Mohammed Berkani, Fethi Farouk Kebaili, Damia Barcelo, Sang-Woo Joo, Yasser Vasseghian, Karima Khenaka

Summary: In this study, the degradation of Dicamba methyl ester (DME) using a low-cost chlorine/ferrous process was investigated. Optimal conditions for DME degradation were determined using an artificial neural network (ANN) model and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, yielding a predicted yield of 88%. GC/MS analysis identified benzene, 1,2,4-trichloro-3-methoxy DME-BP as the only chlorine-containing byproduct. Total organic carbon (TOC) removal was analyzed using a Fenton-like process under optimized conditions, and toxicity assessments using Chlorella vulgaris microalgae indicated low toxicity of 20% when DME mineralization reached 62.52%.

Combined exposure of the bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis to polyethylene microplastics and two pharmaceuticals (citalopram and bezafibrate): Bioaccumulation and metabolomic studies

Summary: In this study, the bioaccumulation, metabolomic alterations, and potential recovery mechanisms of Mediterranean mussels exposed to polyethylene microplastics and pharmaceuticals were investigated. The presence of microplastics delayed the bioaccumulation of citalopram but had a limited effect on bezafibrate accumulation. Pharmaceuticals and microplastics both affected metabolic pathways in mussels, potentially leading to dysregulation of reproduction, energy metabolism, and immunity.
