Summary: The study aimed to explore the sonographic features of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and differentiate it from follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA). Results showed that an interrupted halo and satellite nodule(s) with or without halo ring are specific sonographic features for FTC. Sonography could play a role in distinguishing FTC from FTA.

Summary: This study evaluated the accumulation of lipid droplets and the expression of adipophilin in follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) cells. It was found that FTC cells had abundant lipid droplets and adipophilin expression, while follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) had less. Therefore, assessing adipophilin expression can help differentiate FTC from FTA in surgical specimens.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and value of using deep learning based on grayscale ultrasonography to differentiate atypical and typical medullary thyroid carcinoma from follicular thyroid adenoma. The results show that the ResNet-34 model has higher diagnostic ability compared to the junior sonographer, and successfully identifies a significant number of atypical MTC cases.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether preoperative ultrasonographic findings obtained from the computer-aided detection system were sufficient to stratify the risk of malignancy for thyroid nodules with a cytological diagnosis of follicular neoplasm. The results showed that quantitative features and classification patterns were helpful in risk stratification, with the presence of certain ultrasound characteristics correlating with a higher risk of malignancy. The computer-aided detection software demonstrated higher accuracy compared to human observers, especially in cases with poor agreement.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic performances of six commonly used ultrasound-based risk stratification systems for distinguishing follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) from follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). The results showed that all six systems have potential in the differential diagnosis of FTA and FTC. The Chinese guideline C-TIRADS demonstrated the best diagnostic performance among Chinese patients. ATASPS exhibited high sensitivity, while K-TIRADS had high specificity in distinguishing FTA from FTC.

Summary: Sonographic features of posterior capsular abutment are sensitive and reliable for the diagnosis of posterior minor extrathyroidal extension (ETE) and are associated with lymphovascular invasion and lateral neck lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients. The assessment of posterior minor ETE is important for considering candidates for active surveillance among PTMC patients.

Summary: CEUS is a more valuable and non-invasive imaging modality compared to conventional US in detecting extracapsular extension in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Single capsular invasion was a poor predictor of cervical lymph node metastasis, while extracapsular extension assessments were clinically significant for predicting cervical lymph node metastasis. Among the thyroid papillary carcinoma nodules with differential enhancement, hyper-enhanced nodules had the highest incidence of single capsule invasion (41.9%), while hypo-enhanced ones had a higher incidence of ECE (47.4%).

Summary: This multicenter cohort study analyzed the clinicoradiological characteristics of different histological types of follicular-patterned lesions in thyroid nodules. The study found that distinguishing features for these lesions compared to benign follicular nodules included patient age, lesion diameter, composition, echogenicity, and presence of halo. The study also identified specific features that distinguished follicular carcinoma and follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma from follicular adenoma. The most important distinguishing features were lesion diameter, composition, echogenicity, orientation, and patient age.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the 2021 K-TIRADS biopsy criteria for detecting malignant thyroid nodules in a pediatric population and compared it with the 2016 K-TIRADS. The results showed that the 2021 K-TIRADS had superior diagnostic accuracy to the 2016 K-TIRADS, especially with a biopsy cut-off of 0.5 cm for K-TIRADS 5 and 1.0-1.5 cm for K-TIRADS 4.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of calcitriol on CD4(+) T-cell polarization and kidney injury during sepsis in obese mice. The results showed that calcitriol administration maintained blood CD4(+) T-cell levels, reduced the percentages of Th2 and Th17 cells, and modulated the Th17:Treg ratio. Additionally, calcitriol increased cathelicidin levels, decreased inflammatory chemokines and kidney injury markers, and promoted M1 macrophage polarization toward the M2 type.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of enteral cholecalciferol and/or intravenous calcitriol administration on immune cell subsets, the renin-angiotensin system, and acute lung injury in obese mice. The results suggest that calcitriol administration has a stronger impact on immune cell balance and anti-inflammatory pathways in the lungs, while both forms of vitamin D attenuate sepsis-induced lung injury in obese animals.

Summary: Finding non-invasive and sensitive biomarkers for early screening of high-risk patients is crucial in clinical practice. This prospective study analyzed urine exosomal proteins in patients with thyroid cancer, aiming to identify new prognostic biomarkers for decision-making before surgery. The study found a significant association between urine exosomal TIMP and lymph node metastasis. However, no association was found between MACIS score and urine exosomal proteins. Further research is needed to determine the potential of urine exosomal proteins as prognostic indicators.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 327 patients who underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy and compared the use of a smoke evacuation system. The results showed that the group using the evacuation system had better field of view and shorter operating time. The conclusion is that using evacuators in low-pressure and small-space endoscopic thyroid procedures can enhance the field of view and optimize the operating time.
