Summary: Catalytic oxidation of CH4 over nonprecious Ni/CeO2 catalysts with different CeO2 support morphologies (nanoparticles (P), rods (R), cubes (C)) and synthetic procedures (precipitation, sol-gel (SG)) was studied. The relationship among CeO2 morphologies, redox properties, surface areas, and CH4 oxidation activity was established. CeO2-R support showed higher oxygen vacancies, improved OSC and CH4 oxidation activity compared to CeO2-P and CeO2-C supports. The same activity pattern was observed for Ni containing catalysts (Ni/CeO2-R > Ni/CeO2-P > Ni/CeO2-C). Increasing CeO2 surface area by sol-gel synthesis method (CeO2-SG) improved the CH4 oxidation performance of CeO2-SG and Ni/CeO2-SG compared to CeO2-R and Ni/CeO2-R, respectively. All studied Ni/CeO2 nanocatalysts showed improved hydrothermal stability compared to conventional Pd/Al2O3.

Summary: Monometallic Pd and Ni and bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts supported on CeO2 were prepared and tested for syngas production by the partial oxidation of methane. Bimetallic Pd-Ni/CeO2 catalysts exhibited higher methane conversion and syngas yield compared to monometallic Ni/CeO2 and Pd/CeO2. The bimetallic catalysts prepared by ball milling showed syngas production at lower temperatures. Various preparation parameters were examined, and the best performance was achieved with a bimetallic catalyst prepared at 50 Hz for 20 min, containing only 0.12 wt% Pd and 1.38 wt% Ni. Stability tests demonstrated superior stability for mechanochemically prepared bimetallic Pd-Ni/CeO2 catalysts. The results suggest that the impressive dispersion of metal species and strong interaction with the CeO2 surface contribute to the improved performance.

Summary: LaFe0.4Ni0.6O3/CeO2 (1:1) two-phase composite materials were prepared by mechanochemical and Pechini routes. The catalytic properties of the composites in methane and CO oxidation reactions strongly depend on their preparation conditions. In low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation, the composites demonstrate higher activity compared with LaFe0.4Ni0.6O3 perovskite, with the highest activity observed for the composite prepared by mechanical treatment of perovskite and fluorite precursors. In high-temperature catalytic methane oxidation, the activity correlates with the reducibility of the samples, with the highest activity observed for the composite prepared by the one-pot Pechini route with higher reducibility up to 600 degrees C.

Summary: Research has shown that cationic Ni atoms in clusters at step edges on the CeO2(111) surface are the most active sites for methane conversion reactions, with their small size and high Ni chemical potential contributing to their activity. Density functional theory calculations have clarified the reasons behind this observation, highlighting the importance of the size and morphology of supported Ni nanoparticles, strong Ni-support bonding, and charge transfer at step edges for high catalytic activity, particularly in the activation barrier for C-H bond cleavage during CH4 dissociative adsorption. This knowledge is expected to inspire the development of more efficient catalysts for these reactions.

Summary: In this study, the authors propose that the efficient partial photooxidation of methane to methanol depends on specific band edge positions in photocatalysts. They demonstrate this hypothesis using Bi2O3 as a semiconductor and show that it exhibits favorable valence band properties for .OH production and unfavorable conduction band properties for O-2.-, which is crucial for maintaining an available O-2 level for .CH3 capture and methanol formation. Experimental results reveal that Bi2O3 is capable of selectively converting methane to methanol under visible light at room temperature and pressure, with productivity reaching approximately 3771 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) and around 65% selectivity, thus avoiding over-oxidation to CO2. Isotope labeling experiments and ESR measurements confirm methane as the carbon source for methanol generation and the presence of .CH3 and .OH. Bi2O3 also demonstrates good stability after multiple cycles, maintaining high and selective methanol production. These findings provide important insights into critical properties of photocatalysts for the partial photooxidation of methane to methanol.

Summary: In this study, Pd/CeO2 catalysts were prepared using different Pd precursors and their effects on catalytic activity were investigated. The catalyst prepared using palladium nitrate showed high activity for CH4 oxidation, while the catalyst prepared using palladium acetate exhibited high activity for CO oxidation. This difference in activity can be attributed to the variation in Pd dispersion and state caused by different precursors.

Summary: Two series of catalysts containing nickel supported on silica modified by TiO2 and ZrO2 were tested in the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The results showed that doping silica with titanium oxide increased the methane conversion and catalytic stability, while the presence of zirconium had little effect. After the catalytic test, all the catalysts formed carbon, but to a lesser extent for the ones with grafted supports. Structural characterization confirmed the better structural stability of the nickel particles supported on the sol-gel doped silica, explaining the improvement of catalytic stability during the DRM reaction.
