The use of Electric Propulsion (EP) on satellites for commercial, defense, and space science missions has been increasing in recent decades, from the first successful operation in 1964 aboard the Zond-2 spacecraft to the present day. This paper provides an overview of the technological and commercial development of EP systems that have been deployed. A review of the early years of EP application ends in 1980, when the first geostationary commercial satellite using EP, Intelsat-V, was launched. Beyond 1980, all EP-based spacecraft deployment data through 2018 are presented, divided by spacecraft type: GEO-synchronous satellite, LEO satellites, deep-space missions and small satellites. To date, a total of 587 spacecraft have been launched with some variant of electric propulsion. During the 1960s and 1970s, all 48 spacecraft using EP were government missions, with the US and USSR leading in the development, production, and flight of these systems. These first platforms included a variety of pulsed plasma thrusters, resistojets, arcjets, ion thrusters and Hall thrusters. The number of GEO satellites with electric propulsion systems has increased significantly since 1981, from an average of less than 5 satellites per year during the 1980s to over 15 in recent years. The corresponding annual fraction of EP based GEO satellite launches, compared to all GEO satellite launches, has increased from 20% during the 1980s to over 40% in recent years. For LEO applications, a gradual increase in the utilization of EP has been realized. Of the 167 EP-based LEO platforms deployed, resistojets were the most prolific legacy thruster type (124 S/C) with Hall thrusters gaining traction in recent years (25 S/C), appearing on 19 of 45 satellite missions in the past decade. Of all EP-based LEO missions, approximately half served as testbeds for new technologies. Through 2018, eight deep space spacecraft with EP have been launched, with the US, Japan, and the European Union leading these efforts. Small satellites are also benefiting from this technology, with 24 EP-based small satellites launched to date. Nearly half of these were launched between 2016 and 2018, demonstrating accelerated growth and a large potential for the future of this spacecraft class.

Measurement and identification of azimuthal current in an RF plasma thruster employing a time-varying magnetic field

H. Sekine, H. Koizumi, K. Komurasaki

Summary: This study presents two-dimensional temporally resolved measurements of the magnetic field and azimuthal current in a radio-frequency plasma thruster with a time-varying magnetic field. The measured azimuthal current differs from classical cross-field transport theory and closely aligns with the estimated current using parallel electrical conductivity. The analysis suggests the significant contribution of azimuthal electron drift current to the azimuthal current, indicating the establishment of a strong in-plane perpendicular electric field.

Experimental characterization of non-Maxwellian electron energy distributions in a miniaturized microwave plasma neutralizer

H. Sekine, R. Minematsu, Y. Ataka, P. Ominetti, H. Koizumi, K. Komurasaki

Summary: In this study, the electron energy probability function (EEPF) was experimentally identified in a miniature microwave discharge neutralizer. By using a tiny Langmuir probe coupled with the analog differentiation technique, precise time-averaged EEPFs were obtained over a wide range of operating conditions. The non-Maxwellian, concave EEPFs were observed under all experimental conditions. The results also showed that underestimation of ionization frequency occurs when using the Maxwellian approximation, which is negatively correlated with the shape index of the EEPFs.

Experimental Characterization of Nozzle Performance at Low Reynolds Numbers for Water Microthrusters

Keita Nishii, Hiroyuki Koizumi, Kimiya Komurasaki

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of a thruster nozzle using water vapor as propellant at Reynolds numbers below 1000. The results show that the discharge coefficient remains stable and higher than other gases like argon and nitrogen. The specific impulse efficiency is dependent on superheating, with little dependence below Reynolds numbers of about 250 due to viscosity and phase change effects.

Summary: The study proposes a hybrid thruster for small spacecraft utilizing wire-shaped magnesium as fuel and water as oxidizer to achieve high thrust propulsion with lower mass consumption rate. Experimental results show promising performance with input power of 2-3W, higher ignitability, and lower average mass consumption rate for thinner magnesium wires. The calculated specific impulse reaches its peak at 323 s with a mass mixture ratio of 1.25, demonstrating the potential applicability of the hybrid thruster for deep-space missions.

Complex gravity-acoustic impact on V-flame structure

A. I. Krikunova, A. D. Cheshko, V. V. Krivets

Summary: Fire safety is crucial for the development of efficient and safe energy systems for space objects. This paper focuses on studying the influence of gravity on combustion processes and analyzes the dynamics of inverted conical methane-air flame under external acoustic excitation. The results show that at high excitation frequencies, the intensity of vortex generation is similar to that observed in experiments with normal gravity, indicating the dominance of acoustic mechanism. Additionally, at an external excitation frequency of 240 Hz, significant growth in shear vortex diameters and increased amplitude of perpendicular oscillations of flame branches were observed, indicating the most intensive large scale instability of flow.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of deployment friction on the dynamic characteristics of nonconductive space tether through experimental measurement and numerical simulation. The results show that deployment friction significantly limits the uncontrolled tether deployment, while increasing the initial deployment velocity and satellite effective mass, as well as decreasing orbital altitude, can enhance the deployment capability and dynamic stability. In addition, an optimal matching relationship between tether length and satellite total mass is proposed, which is of substantial importance for the design of nonconductive space tether systems.
