Lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and aquifers are important freshwater sources for basic human needs such as drinking, sanitation, and agriculture. The anthropogenic influences on the natural environment, especially on freshwater resources, have increased dramatically during the last few decades. Eutrophication and pollution are major threats to many of these water bodies. There are thousands of man-made reservoirs, which are centuries old in Sri Lanka, and only a handful of them have been extensively studied and monitored. This study investigates the spatial and seasonal variations of water quality in Padaviya Reservoir by studying the vertical distribution of physical parameters and inorganic nitrogen species: ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, reactive phosphate, and dissolved oxygen. Padaviya Reservoir, which is an ancient man-made irrigation reservoir, has never been studied in detail to assess its water quality. Sharp chemical gradients for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, reactive phosphate, and dissolved oxygen were observed between surface and bottom waters of the reservoir, suggesting that it does not overturn completely. The temperature difference is between the surface and bottom waters of about 2 degrees C, which is not large enough to cause thermal stratification. The most probable reason for the stratification is extensive photosynthesis at surface waters with subsequent decomposition of the organic material at the bottom.

Progress and prospects in mitigation of landfill leachate pollution: Risk, pollution potential, treatment and challenges

Prabuddhi Wijekoon, Pabasari Arundathi Koliyabandara, Asitha T. Cooray, Su Shiung Lam, Bandunee C. L. Athapattu, Meththika Vithanage

Summary: The increasing amount of municipal solid waste ending up in open dumps and landfills results in continuous leachate flow, creating environmental risks. Evaluation through Leachate Pollution Index (LPI) shows high pollution potentials from leachate in most developing countries, mainly due to high organic waste composition and low waste management techniques.

Ferrozine colorimetry and reverse flow injection analysis (rFIA) based method for the determination of total iron in aqueous solutions at nanomolar concentrations

Asitha T. Cooray, Michael J. Pullin

Summary: This article describes a method based on rFIA and FERROZINE spectrophotometric detection for quantifying total iron concentration in stream water at nanomolar concentrations. The method has a low detection limit and a wide linear dynamic range, and the rFIA manifold is assembled from commercially available components, showing its potential for practical application.

Characterization of landfill leachate at the Karadiyana open dumpsite, Sri Lanka, and assessment of water pollution in its vicinity

P. A. Koliyabandara, A. T. Cooray, S. Liyanage, C. Siriwardhana

Summary: This research assesses the chemical composition of landfill leachate in Sri Lanka and its impact on groundwater pollution. The leachate from the Karadiyana dumpsite shows a high potential for contaminating the environment. The concentrations of nitrate, ammonia, and total phosphate in the leachate vary within certain ranges. The study also reveals that most of the dug wells located near the dumpsite exceed the recommended nitrate level, making them unsuitable for drinking water.

Summary: This study investigated the water quality of Padaviya Wewa Reservoir in Sri Lanka and found a distinct chemical gradient from the surface to the bottom, driven by intense biological activities. The surface waters were oxygen-rich with low concentrations of nutrients and metal ions, while the bottom waters were oxygen-depleted with higher concentrations of nutrients and metal ions.

Summary: Tropical countries face economic losses due to mosquito-borne diseases, which can be combatted with plant-based mosquito repellents. A questionnaire survey in Sri Lanka identified the top 25 underutilized aromatic plants with mosquito repellent ability and assessed the rural sector's willingness to cultivate and supply them. The study found significant associations between gender, education level, and willingness to cultivate and supply these plants.

Fluoride analysis in aqueous solutions - a comparison of two colorimetric methods

A. Fernando, S. Liyanage, A. T. Cooray

Summary: This research evaluated the fluoride concentrations of twenty natural water samples using SPADNS and Eriochrome Cyanine R colorimetric methods, and found significant differences in the fluoride concentrations produced by these two methods. The potential interferences of Al3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ ions on fluoride analysis were also assessed, with Al3+ ions causing the highest interference. Acid distillation was effective in increasing fluoride concentrations, but statistically comparable fluoride concentrations were not observed even after the distillation process.

Biochar-based Barricade and Wetland as an Integrated Landfill Leachate Treatment System

Kusalvin Dabare, Prabuddhi Wijekoon, Asitha Cooray, B. C. L. Athapattu, Meththika Vithanage

Summary: The study focuses on treating landfill leachate using a pilot scale biochar based barricade and wetland system, which showed high removal rates for ammonium-N, phosphate, and COD. Further improvements through testing different ratios of biochar and leachate flow rates are suggested for potential upscaling of the system.
