Summary: Post-surgical fluid leakage is a critical symptom after gastrointestinal or urinary tract surgeries. Understanding the mechanism behind such abnormalities is crucial in surgical and medical science. This current mouse study investigates the effect of urinary extravasation and demonstrates the development of spongio-fibrosis/urethral stricture as a result.

Summary: This study demonstrates scarless urethral repair using a 3D-printed patch reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The patch, made of sodium alginate/gelatin/reduced graphene oxide (SA/Gel/rGO), has tunable stiffness, degradation profile, and anti-fibrosis performance. The inclusion of rGO with the appropriate concentration promotes cell migration and proliferation, inhibits urethral fibrosis, and enhances urothelium formation. This strategy shows great potential in addressing the dilemma of necessary biomaterial stiffness and unwanted fibrosis in urethral repair.

Summary: This study evaluated temporal trends in the use of urethral endoscopic management and urethroplasty before and after the release of the American Urological Association (AUA) Male Urethral Stricture Guidelines in 2017. The study found that the use of urethroplasty is increasing and that guidelines do not result in immediate changes in management trends.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the guidelines for antibiotic management in patients undergoing urethral reconstruction and determine whether prolonged antibiotic use could prevent infections. The use of a standardized protocol demonstrated no benefit to prolonged antibiotic use and there were no identifiable risk factors among surgical characteristics.

Summary: A contemporary cohort of distal urethral strictures was described, with a surgical technique termed distal one-stage urethroplasty developed to address the majority of cases without the need for grafts or flaps. Shorter operative time and low post-operative complications were associated with this approach.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between Urethral Stricture Score and LSE score with surgical complexity and stricture recurrence risk. The results showed a positive linear correlation between Urethral Stricture Score and LSE score, and both scores were independently correlated with increasing surgical complexity. Only LSE score was associated with an increased risk of stricture recurrence.

Summary: Studies on the management of urethral strictures in transmasculine patients after genital gender-affirming surgery are scarce. Different techniques have been reported for different locations of urethral strictures, but there is insufficient evidence to favor one technique over another due to a lack of comparative studies. Additional research, ideally well-designed prospective randomized controlled trials, is needed to determine the most effective management techniques.

Summary: Urethral stricture disease is a common urological pathology in adult men in low- or low-middle-income countries. Limited resources often restrict the available treatment options. However, with longitudinal mentorship, local surgeons can learn the skills for successful complex urethroplasty, improving the care provided.

Summary: Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat prostate cancer, but can also result in urethral strictures in some patients. Managing these strictures is challenging due to poor vascularized tissue for reconstruction and the proximity of the sphincter, which may affect functional outcomes.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of a double-layer running suture re-anastomosis urethral stricture repair with early catheter removal to the conventional interrupted suture re-anastomosis after excision of a bulbar urethral stricture. The results showed that the double-layer re-anastomosis had a similar success rate to the conventional anastomosis. Additionally, the urethral catheter could be safely removed within 24 hours after the surgery.

Summary: To overcome the issue of insufficient bionic performance, researchers mimicked the urethral matrix and used two electrospinning techniques to create a double-layer sponge tube comprising nanofibers and nanoyarns. Scarless urethral repair was achieved by delivering bioactive growth factors from adipose-derived stem cell exosomes through physical absorption. This design proves to be instructive for the regeneration of not only the urethra but also other tubular organs.

Summary: Adequate correlation between clinical assessment, urethroscopy findings, and VUDS is essential for objectively identifying FUSD and planning surgical management. Simply having a good urethral caliber is not enough to rule out significant obstruction. Early urethroplasty yields better outcomes for patients who have failed dilation as treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the optimal strategy for the treatment of chronic recurrent urethral strictures longer than 3 cm, using a temporary urethral stent. The results showed that temporary bulbar urethral stents combined with transurethral resection of fibrotic scar tissue seemed to be the optimal minimally invasive treatment strategy for chronic urethral strictures with a long fibrotic scar.

Summary: This study compared the guidelines from the American Urologic Association (AUA), Societe Internationale d'Urologie (SIU), and the European Association of Urology (EAU) on the evaluation, management, and follow-up of patients with anterior urethral stricture disease (USD). The guidelines showed alignment in diagnostic workup and follow-up, but discordance in the management of anterior urethral strictures, particularly for endoscopic treatment and stenting.

Summary: This study evaluated the value of haematologic inflammatory parameters in predicting sperm retrieval rates during micro-TESE. The results showed that neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and systemic immune-inflammation index were more powerful predictors than platelet-lymphocyte ratio. Using these parameters improved the predictive value of the baseline model.

Summary: This study investigated whether there is a change in urinary incontinence (UI) level in patients who underwent endoscopic urethral procedures (EUP) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), and whether this change is affected by the duration of the procedure and the type of endoscopic device used. The results showed a significant increase in UI level in the group that used rigid cystoscopy, while no significant increase was observed in the groups that used flexible cystoscopy and semi-rigid ureterorenoscopy. There was no significant correlation between increased operation time and UI level.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive summary of the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up process of 245 patients who underwent open urethroplasty for urethral stricture in a tertiary referral center over a 13-year period. The results show that urethroplasty techniques are the most successful treatment option for urethral stricture, and the preoperative diagnosis and surgical experience are crucial for maximizing the patient's benefit.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in the recurrence of urethral stricture. The results showed significant differences in SII values and albumin levels between the recurrence and non-recurrence groups. Using a cutoff value of 252 for SII, the recurrence risk could be predicted with moderate accuracy. The study suggests that open urethroplasty may be more suitable for patients with high SII values to improve surgical success rates.

Summary: Testosterone boosters are heavily marketed to men with claims to increase testosterone, but most fail to do so. Only a few, such as beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate and betaine, are effective for male athletes. Eurycoma longifolia, a blend of Punica granatum fruit rind and Theobroma cacao seed extracts (Tesnor & TRADE;) and purified Shilajit extract (PrimaVie & TRADE;) may be effective for men with late-onset hypogonadism, while Eurycoma longifolia and Withania somnifera may be effective for healthy men. A non-hormonal aromatase inhibitor (Novadex XT & TRADE;) may be effective for male athletes.
