Agarose hydrogel as an efficient carrier for protein model has been considered to optimize the lubrication of artificial hip joints. Elevating the effectiveness of lubricant to reduce frictional coefficient and wear debris to prolong life time of prosthesis is a main goal. Various biological solvents, such as sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, simulated body fluid (SBF), phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and deionized water, have been investigated to achieve the best structure for polymeric network during the hydrogel preparation process. Results proof that SBF is able to provide sustained release with 38% reduction rate of frictional coefficient to demonstrate sufficient strength of the polymer chains. Novelty of the present work is focusing on the anti-friction performance of hydrogel protein delivery system designed for medical or pharmaceutical applications.
