Background: In today's world where chronic lifestyle diseases are on a rapid ascent among the masses, nutraceuticals have firmly established themselves as key to human health owing to their disease prevention advantages. India, in particular, has witnessed an upswing in the acceptance of nutraceuticals as a viable option for maintaining optimum health. Nutraceutical market in India: In the last five years, the nutraceutical market here has flourished into a $3 bn industry and is expected to grow to a $6.1bn by the year 2022. Until the turn of the century, the existence of innumerable laws with respect to the nutraceutical industry created a state of uncertainty in the minds of nutraceutical manufacturers in India. The regulations: However, the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) has reinforced regulations with respect to nutraceuticals, creating a regulated space for manufacturers to conduct their business in. Conclusion: Today, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ensures that regulations for nutraceuticals in India are at par with the international standards.
