This study investigated the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharides (SMPs) on the injury of chicken hepatocytes in vitro and in vivo. In in vitro studies primary cultured hepatocytes were isolated by 2-step collagenase perfusion. Carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) was added to the hepatocytes to establish a hepatocyte injury model. Hepatocytes were treated with different concentrations of SMPs to detect the protective effects of SMPs on CCL4-induced hepatocyte injury. The results of the control group showed that chicken hepatocytes grew well and their morphology was normal. After CCL4 treatment, the activity of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) of hepatocytes increased compared with the normal control group. SMPs treatment downregulated the contents of ALT, AST, and malondialdehyde (MDA), and upregulated the contents of glutathione (GSH) and cytochrome P450 (CYP450). An acute chicken liver injury model was established in vivo with 2.0 mL/kg 50% CCL4. Oral administration of SMP at different doses exhibited preventive success. The results showed that compared with the control group, the contents of total protein (TP), albumin (Alb), and GSH in the liver injury model group were significantly decreased and the levels of liver index, ALT, AST, and MDA were significantly increased. In contrast, in the SMP group the contents of TP, Alb, and GSH were significantly increased, and the levels of liver index, ALT, AST, and MDA were significantly decreased compared with the model group. Therefore, we conclude that SMPs have good protective effect on chicken liver damage in vivo and in vitro.

Florfenicol causes excessive lipid peroxidation and apoptosis induced renal injury in broilers

Xiao Wang, Chao Han, Yuqing Cui, Shuying Li, Guozhong Jin, Wanyu Shi, Yongzhan Bao

Summary: The study revealed that FFC has certain nephrotoxicity to broilers, with dose-dependent and reversible effects on kidney function. The main manifestations include disorderly kidney tissue structure and atrophy of glomeruli. Additionally, FFC can lead to significant changes in certain indicators in serum and kidney, and promote renal cell apoptosis by regulating the expression of related factors.

Wei Liu, Ying Liu, Siyuan Fang, Weiyu Yao, Xiao Wang, Yongzhan Bao, Wanyu Shi

Summary: Excessive and nonstandard use of florfenicol (FFC) can have negative effects on animal health and human health. In this study, the researchers investigated the effect of FFC on specific signal transduction pathways in chick livers and the regulatory effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharides (SMPs) on these pathways. The results showed that SMPs alleviated FFC-induced liver metabolic disorder in chicks by regulating drug and amino acid metabolism pathways. This study is important for promoting healthy broiler breeding and ensuring the safe supply of chicken-related products.

Florfenicol induced renal inflammatory response and apoptosis via cell adhesion molecules signaling pathway

Xiao Wang, Wei Liu, Ying Liu, Yulan Jiao, Chang Rong, Qi Liu, Wanyu Shi

Summary: Early use of florfenicol (FFC) can adversely affect the health of broilers and cause kidney injury. This study used transcriptome and proteome sequencing to explore the regulatory effect of FFC on specific signal pathways in injured kidneys. The results showed that FFC exposure significantly altered the expression levels of hundreds of genes and proteins in chick kidneys, including those involved in the cell adhesion molecules signaling pathway. Further analysis revealed that these changes were associated with inflammation and apoptosis in renal tissues.

Cuscuta chinensis flavonoids reducing oxidative stress of the improve sperm damage in bisphenol A exposed mice offspring

Qianhui Zhao, Ying Liu, Yixuan Zhu, Yulan Jiao, Wanyu Shi

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Cuscuta chinensis flavonoids (CCFs) can antagonize or alleviate BPA-induced reproductive injury by analyzing the processes associated with BPA's impairment of sperm quality. The results showed that CCFs could significantly increase the levels of reproductive hormones and receptors, reduce oxidative stress, increase mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduce sperm apoptosis in male mice. These findings suggest that CCFs can mitigate the negative effects of BPA on sperm quality by regulating oxidative stress correlated factors.

Prevalence, genomic characteristics, and pathogenicity of fowl adenovirus 2 in Southern China

Junqin Zhang, Zimin Xie, Yanlin Pan, Zuoxin Chen, Yunzhen Huang, Linlin Li, Jiawen Dong, Yong Xiang, Qi Zhai, Minhua Sun, Xingying Li, Shujian Huang, Ming Liao

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in the occurrence of fowl adenovirus 2 (FAdV-2) in China, posing a significant threat to the poultry industry. This study investigated the epidemiology, phylogenetic relationship, genomic characteristics, and pathogenicity of FAdV-2. The results showed that FAdV-2 was the most commonly detected serotype among various FAdV serotypes. Genetic analysis revealed that these FAdV-2 strains formed a distinct branch within the FAdV-D group and had a high nucleotide similarity with reference strains. Recombination analysis identified recombination events between FAdV-2 and FAdV-11 in some strains. Pathogenicity experiments demonstrated that a recombinant FAdV-2 strain caused a high mortality rate and more severe disease in chickens. These findings contribute to our understanding of FAdV-2 and provide a basis for vaccine development.
