Summary: This study investigated the role of DC-SIGN(+) macrophages in the immune microenvironment of endometriosis and found that CSF-1 can induce the polarization of macrophages into cells with a DC-SIGN(+) phenotype. Further investigation of the mechanism and biological activities of CSF-1-induced DC-SIGN(+) macrophages is important for enhancing our understanding of the physiology of endometriosis.

Summary: Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles and soluble molecules can promote the differentiation of monocytes into different types of macrophages. While the vesicles specifically promote proinflammatory macrophages, the soluble molecules direct the differentiation of a specific macrophage subset through certain activation pathways. The presence of macrophages expressing the vesicle-induced signature in breast cancer patients' TAMs is associated with T cell infiltration and extended patient survival.

Summary: In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the concentration of MCTR3 in plasma is negatively correlated with joint disease activity and severity. Research shows that MCTR3 can confer enduring joint protective properties by reprogramming monocytes and its anti-arthritic and tissue reparative activities are mediated in part by Arg-1.

Summary: GM-CSF plays a key role in macrophage polarization in different types of arthritis, with CD163(+) macrophages expressing pro-inflammatory markers in all groups. Macrophage density is higher in the early stages of RA and PsA compared to persistent UA.

Summary: Conditioned medium from lung cancer cells promoted the migration, proliferation, and M2-like polarization of BMDMs, while suppressing M1-like polarization through mitigating the canonical NF-kappa B pathway via reducing cytosolic calcium concentration. This study first revealed that cytosolic calcium is key to inhibiting canonical NF-kappa B and M1-like polarization in macrophages by tumor cells.
