Summary: Hemodialysis is the main treatment for end-stage kidney disease, but cardiovascular diseases are highly prevalent in these patients and the leading cause of death. The mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients is approximately 20 times higher than the general population. This review provides an overview of cardiovascular diseases in hemodialysis patients and advancements in its management.

Summary: Visceral adipose tissue is closely associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. It promotes adipokine dysregulation and insulin resistance, leading to health issues such as inflammation and kidney dysfunction. However, the relationship between obesity and renal prognosis remains controversial.

Summary: Precision medicine has been applied in kidney transplantation, where genotyping and antibody detection are used to evaluate sensitivity to immune antigens. Treatment individualization through dosing adjustments is possible. In contrast, hemodialysis prescription lacks precision, relying on outdated standards rather than personalized needs.

Summary: This study aimed to monitor the changes in monocyte subsets in 5 end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients over a 1-year period after a mild Covid-19 infection. The results showed a significant decrease in CD14-low CD16+ monocytes and an increase in intermediate monocytes during Covid-19 infection. These monocytes retained their inflammatory activity even after recovery from Covid infection. In conclusion, ESKD patients exhibit a prolonged pro-inflammatory response after a Covid-19 infection, and renal failure does not significantly affect the inflammatory response.

Summary: Most trials on mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 did not include patients with CKD, HD, or KTR. This study assessed the antibody response after mRNA vaccination in these patients and found reduced efficacy in HD patients and KTR. Factors associated with non-response were identified, including treatment methods and medication use.

Summary: The study found that patients with young-onset type 2 diabetes (diagnosed before the age of 40) have a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 84,384 patients aged 20-64 who started anti-diabetic medication between 2010 and 2011 were included in the study, and those with type 1 diabetes or a history of CKD were excluded. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with young-onset diabetes had a higher incidence of CKD compared to those with late-onset diabetes.

Summary: Life extension in modern society has brought new concepts about disorders like frailty and sarcopenia, while advanced technology methods have made it possible to protect patients from lethal chronic kidney disease. Frailty, sarcopenia, and protein energy wasting share common components, with skeletal muscle playing a central role in their etiologies. Recent research suggests that exercise combined with nutritional supplementation may be an effective approach to combat muscle wasting in elderly patients undergoing HD treatments.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of IBS and its impact on stress and depressive symptoms in female nurses. It found that female nurses with IBS were more likely to experience increased stress levels, but IBS was no longer a significant factor for increased stress levels when demographics, dietary habits, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms were considered. However, female nurses with IBS were still significantly more likely to experience depressive symptoms when all variables were considered. Support is needed to alleviate depressive symptoms in nurses with IBS.

Summary: This study analyzed levels of physical and mental fatigue among Korean female nurses and found that nurses in special care units experienced greater degrees of both types of fatigue. Work department significantly influenced nurse fatigue, emphasizing the importance of monitoring fatigue levels for nurses' wellbeing and patient safety. Strategies to mitigate nursing fatigue, such as counseling programs and ensuring rest time, should be implemented to support nurses, especially those in high-stress units.
