ObjectivesThe revised European consensus on sarcopenia definition and diagnosis (EWGSOP2) includes the SARC-F questionnaire, the most valid and consistent sarcopenia screening tool, as the mandatory first step. Our aim was the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the SARC-F questionnaire as a culturally-responsive Spanish-language version for the European population.Study designCross-sectional descriptive study, applying the two-step WHO methodology for translation and cross-cultural adaptation of health questionnaires, and harmonization with the Mexican-Spanish version. European Union Geriatric Medicine Society recommendations for SARC-F validation in European languages were considered.ParticipantsOutpatient clinics of a university hospital. Inclusion criteria: stable, ambulatory (including aids), community-dwelling population 65 years old.Main outcome measuresThe self-reported 5-item SARC-F questionnaire was administered; scores 4 indicated sarcopenia. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy-likelihood ratios, predictive values, and kappa statistics were calculated and consecutively compared with European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) and EWGSOP2 criteria.ResultsThis Spanish version, administered in an average 70s, has adequate internal consistency (Cronbach alpha=0.779). For the validation study, 90 (43.3%) of 208 potentially eligible subjects (81.4 5.9 years old, 75.6% women) were included. SARC-F identified 51 (56.7%) subjects with sarcopenia and 39 (43.3%) without the disease. Prevalence was 17.8% per EWGSOP and 25.6% per EWGSOP2 (58% accuracy and fair agreement: sensitivity, 783%; specificity, 50.8%).ConclusionsSARC-F is a feasible tool, suitable for bedside assessment in community-dwelling older patients. Wide diffusion of this culturally-responsible SARC-F Spanish version is expected as EWGSOP2 is adopted and sarcopenia assessment is broadly implemented in Spain.

Association between GLIM-defined malnutrition and hospitalizations in kidney transplant candidates: A post hoc analysis of a cohort study

Vanesa Davalos-Yerovi, Maria Jose Perez-Saez, Anna Faura-Vendrell, Maria Dolors Muns-Cornellas, Xavier Duran, Dolores Sanchez-Rodriguez, Julio Pascual, Ester Marco, FRAILMar Study Grp

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the value of the Global Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in predicting hospitalizations and mortality in kidney transplant candidates during their first year on the waiting list. The results showed that malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria was prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and was associated with a threefold increased risk of hospitalizations during the first year on the waiting list.

Can the Mediterranean diet decrease the risk of depression in older persons - a systematic review

Anna Rudzinska, Ian Perera, Barbara Gryglewska, Jerzy Gasowski, Karolina Piotrowicz

Summary: A significant number of individuals aged 75 and above experience major depression. Symptoms of depression in elderly patients are often overlooked or misdiagnosed as a natural part of aging. This study explores the potential benefits of adhering to the Mediterranean diet in preventing and alleviating depressive symptoms among the elderly. The review of 9 studies indicates that adherence to the principles of the Mediterranean diet may have a positive impact on the mental well-being of elderly patients and encourages further research on the relationship between this diet and depression.

Low Phase Angle Values Are Associated with Malnutrition according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition Criteria in Kidney Transplant Candidates: Preliminary Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy in the FRAILMar Study

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the phase angle (PhA) as a screening tool for malnutrition in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) waiting for kidney transplantation (KT). The study found that a PhA threshold of <= 4.85 degrees had a sensitivity of 72.7%, specificity of 65.9%, and positive and negative likelihood ratios of 2.13 and 0.41, respectively. However, when compared to the Global Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, the PhA <= 4.85 degrees only showed fair validity for detecting malnutrition in this population.

Horcajada, Judit Villar-Garcia

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for the presence of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) and describe the profile of persistent symptoms in a multidisciplinary Post-Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) Unit. The results showed that treatment with dexamethasone and remdesivir was associated with shorter duration of symptoms, and female gender, obesity, asthma, and disease severity were identified as risk factors for PASC.

Summary: The study identified several risk factors, such as age, education level, obesity, hypertension, depression, and low physical function, that are consistently associated with an increased risk of developing multiple chronic diseases. However, there is inconsistency in the results for factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, and dietary patterns. The heterogeneity in settings, exposure and outcome, and baseline health of participants hampers robust conclusions.

Poor Appetite in Frail Older Persons-A Systematic Review

Anna Rudzinska, Karolina Piotrowicz, Ian Perera, Barbara Gryglewska, Jerzy Gasowski

Summary: Anorexia of aging is a common problem in older adults, with prevalence ranging from 10% to over 30% depending on the setting. This systematic review found a weighted total prevalence of 11.3% for anorexia of aging among community-dwelling older adults. Frailty or risk of frailty was associated with a higher prevalence of anorexia of aging. More research is needed to understand the direction of this relationship.

Diminished Physical Activity in Older Hospitalised Patients with and without COVID-19

Karolina Piotrowicz, Ian Perera, Monika Rys, Anna Skalska, Suzy V. Hope, Barbara Gryglewska, Jean-Pierre Michel, Tomasz Grodzicki, Jerzy Gasowski

Summary: This study examined the impact of acute viral respiratory infections, including COVID-19, on the physical activity of hospitalized older patients. The results showed that COVID-19 status did not significantly affect physical activity. It was also found that muscular function upon admission was associated with physical activity.

Summary: In stable patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, pulmonary rehabilitation is an effective non-pharmacological treatment. This study aimed to explore the effects of endurance exercise training on vascular function in these patients. The results showed that training promoted mechanisms of damage/repair in favor of repair, leading to potential improvements in hemodynamics and clinical response.

Evaluation of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index in predicting mortality in older patients with COVID-19 in the AgeBru cohort

Dorien De Meester, Mathijs Goossens, Ester Marco, Marie Claessens, Jennifer Gautier, Cedric Annweiler, Siddhartha Lieten, Florence Benoit, Murielle Surquin, Dolores Sanchez-Rodriguez

Summary: The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) on hospital admission was found to be associated with increased 14-day mortality risk in older inpatients with COVID-19. A GNRI score of <= 98 indicated a risk of malnutrition. However, no association was found between GNRI and 12-month mortality risk. Further studies are needed to validate the short-term predictive value of GNRI in this population.
