Summary: This study examined the validity of the Italian version of SARC-F and found that it showed high specificity, moderate reliability, and good associations with other predictive tests. The Italian version of SARC-F appears to be a useful screening tool for the diagnosis of sarcopenia in Italian elderly populations.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between the SARC-F or SARC-F + CC and the presence of comorbidities and risk of death in older hospitalized cancer patients. The results showed that using the SARC-F score with a cut-off >4 or >6 is more relevant for detecting comorbidities and risk of death than using SARC-F with calf circumference.

Summary: In elderly gastrointestinal cancer outpatients, there is a positive but low correlation between the SARC-F score and the ECW/TBW ratio, suggesting the potential loss of muscle function due to extracellular fluid accumulation.

Summary: Proxy-reported version of the SARC-F questionnaire is validated for screening sarcopenia-related functional impairments, showing good sensitivity and specificity for both ad-hoc and retrospective screening. The proxy-reported SARC-F is non-inferior to the patient-reported version in correlating with physical performance test results, suggesting its potential as a standard tool for evaluating sarcopenia-related risk in older adults with severe acute diseases.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly hemodialysis patients and found an association between fat mass percentage and SARC-F/SARC-F+CC. A significant proportion (37.5%) of patients were at risk of muscle function loss, and adiposity was linked to an increased likelihood of sarcopenia by 25%.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic values of the SARC-F and SARC-CalF scales with five reference diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia. The results showed that SARC-CalF significantly enhanced the sensitivity and overall diagnosis of SARC-F, making it an optimal screening tool for sarcopenia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Summary: Children treated for hemato-oncological diseases are at risk of muscle deterioration. The pediatric SARC-F (PED-SARC-F) is an accurate screening tool for identifying functional sarcopenia in these patients. A cut-off point of >= 5 has the highest specificity and reduces unnecessary assessments.

Summary: This study compared different assessment methods for diagnosing sarcopenia in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The results showed that SARC-CalF and CC performed better than SARC-F in diagnosing sarcopenia. Furthermore, the superiority of SARC-CalF and CC over SARC-F was maintained when stratified by gender.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the value of the Global Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in predicting hospitalizations and mortality in kidney transplant candidates during their first year on the waiting list. The results showed that malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria was prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and was associated with a threefold increased risk of hospitalizations during the first year on the waiting list.

Summary: A significant number of individuals aged 75 and above experience major depression. Symptoms of depression in elderly patients are often overlooked or misdiagnosed as a natural part of aging. This study explores the potential benefits of adhering to the Mediterranean diet in preventing and alleviating depressive symptoms among the elderly. The review of 9 studies indicates that adherence to the principles of the Mediterranean diet may have a positive impact on the mental well-being of elderly patients and encourages further research on the relationship between this diet and depression.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the phase angle (PhA) as a screening tool for malnutrition in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) waiting for kidney transplantation (KT). The study found that a PhA threshold of <= 4.85 degrees had a sensitivity of 72.7%, specificity of 65.9%, and positive and negative likelihood ratios of 2.13 and 0.41, respectively. However, when compared to the Global Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, the PhA <= 4.85 degrees only showed fair validity for detecting malnutrition in this population.

Summary: The study identified several risk factors, such as age, education level, obesity, hypertension, depression, and low physical function, that are consistently associated with an increased risk of developing multiple chronic diseases. However, there is inconsistency in the results for factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, and dietary patterns. The heterogeneity in settings, exposure and outcome, and baseline health of participants hampers robust conclusions.

Summary: Anorexia of aging is a common problem in older adults, with prevalence ranging from 10% to over 30% depending on the setting. This systematic review found a weighted total prevalence of 11.3% for anorexia of aging among community-dwelling older adults. Frailty or risk of frailty was associated with a higher prevalence of anorexia of aging. More research is needed to understand the direction of this relationship.

Summary: The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) on hospital admission was found to be associated with increased 14-day mortality risk in older inpatients with COVID-19. A GNRI score of <= 98 indicated a risk of malnutrition. However, no association was found between GNRI and 12-month mortality risk. Further studies are needed to validate the short-term predictive value of GNRI in this population.
