Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. AD is characterized by progressive impairments of memory as well as other cognitive functions and an increasing loss of autonomy in everyday life. This review article provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art (symptomatic) pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer's disease, specifics in the context of concomitant neuropsychiatric symptoms in multimorbid patients, and drugs currently under development that have apotentially causal (disease modifying) effect are also mentioned.
