Purpose Lumbosacral plexus injuries usually occur in patients with severe, multiple traumas requiring intensive care, affecting gait function. The purpose of the present study was to identify the initial factors associated with gait outcome in lumbosacral plexus injuries caused by traumas. Methods We retrospectively identified 664 patients with pelvic fractures caused by trauma between 2006 and 2017. The lumbosacral plexus injuries were electrodiagnostically confirmed in 30 patients (4.5%). Demographic, injury-related, fracture-related and electrodiagnostic factors were compared between patients with long-term unassisted gait outcomes to those with assisted gait outcomes, with an average of 27 months elapsing after the trauma. Results Eleven patients (36.7%) remained in the assisted gait group during the follow-up period. Complex pelvic trauma, rather than the severity of trauma to the entire body, was associated with a poor gait outcome. Among the various causes of injury, pedestrians struck by vehicles were associated with assisted gait outcomes. The number of anatomic locations involved in pelvic fractures, pelvic ring instability by Tile classification, and the proportion of unstable sacral fractures were higher in patients with assisted gait outcomes compared with those having unassisted gait outcomes. Weaknesses in the initial hip extensor, knee flexor, ankle dorsiflexor and ankle plantar flexor were observed significantly more often in patients with assisted gait outcomes. The Dumitru and Wilbourn's scale of the anterior and posterior sacral plexus was significantly higher in the assisted gait group. Conclusions Gait outcome after lumbosacral plexus injury is associated with the range and stability of the pelvic fracture and the severity of the anterior and posterior sacral plexus injury. Poor gait outcome was associated with the severity of the trauma to the pelvis rather than that to the entire body.

Epidemiological trends of Bell's palsy treated with steroids in Korea between 2008 and 2018

Jung Soo Lee, Yeo Hyung Kim

Summary: The study based on Korean National Health Insurance claims data from 2008 to 2018 showed an increasing trend in the incidence of Bell's palsy. Risk factors for Bell's palsy included age (60-69 years), sex (male), and month (January). Recurrence rate of Bell's palsy was 1.5% over an 11-year period, with male sex and physiotherapy being independently associated with the recurrence of the disease.

Efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy for patients with limited-disease small-cell lung cancer: a retrospective, nationwide, population-based cohort study

Seo Ree Kim, Ji Hyung Hong, Soo-Yoon Sung, Yeo Hyung Kim, Sang Hoon Chun, Hyun Woo Lee, Jung Soo Lee, Yoon Ho Ko

Summary: In the Korean population, the effects of EP-CCRT on OS and TFST are significantly more favorable than those of IP-CCRT. Dual-agent chemotherapy provides a better survival benefit than single-agent chemotherapy when CCRT fails. IP-based chemotherapy leads to better OS in platinum-resistant relapsed patients, while the opposite is observed for platinum-sensitive relapsed patients.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the visual perception of healthy full-term infants using the Preverbal Visual Assessment (PreViAs) questionnaire. The study found that the PreViAs questionnaire had high internal consistency in global scores and three domains. The scores were positively associated with gestational age and sex in infants under 12 months old.

Summary: This study evaluates the characteristics, treatments, and incidence rates of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and tenosynovitis in women with breast cancer, according to the hormone therapy used. The research found that aromatase inhibitor (AI) users have a higher incidence of CTS and tenosynovitis compared to other hormone therapy groups. More than half of CTS and tenosynovitis cases occurred within 12 months after hormone commencement.

Patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior and their associated factors among nondisabled stroke survivors

Young-Ah Choi, Jung Soo Lee, Jae Hyeon Park, Yeo Hyung Kim

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior, and the factors associated with these, in middle-aged and elderly stroke survivors without limitations to their physical activity. The findings showed that compared to survivors of ischemic heart disease and healthy controls, stroke survivors spent less time in aerobic activity and more time in sedentary behavior, and environmental factors had a significant impact on their levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior.

Association of physical activity, smoking, and socioeconomic factors on health checkup participation in community-dwelling stroke survivors aged 50 years or older

Mina Park, Jung Soo Lee, Yeo Hyung Kim

Summary: This study investigated the association between sociodemographic and health-related factors and health checkup participation in community-dwelling stroke survivors. The findings showed that insufficient physical activity, current smoking, low education level, living alone, and no occupation were negatively associated with health checkup participation. The study concluded that policies and further research are needed to promote health checkups for stroke survivors who have these risk factors.

Self-Reported Reasons for Activity Limitations According to Age and Sex in Community-Dwelling Stroke Survivors

Young-Ah Choi, Yeo Hyung Kim

Summary: We examined self-reported reasons for activity limitations among Korean stroke survivors, considering age and sex differences. Data from 1547 stroke survivors who participated in a survey were analysed. The results showed that older and female stroke survivors reported more reasons for activity limitations compared to younger and male survivors, which differed by age and sex. A tailored approach considering age and sex is necessary to help stroke survivors with activity limitations, highlighting the importance of considering demographic factors in interventions to improve their quality of life.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors independently associated with prolonged sedentary times in Korean older adults. The findings revealed that advanced age, female sex, unemployment, living alone, urban residence, and insufficient aerobic exercise were all associated with long sedentary times. In addition, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and arthritis were positively associated with long sedentary times. Tailored interventions that consider various sociodemographic, behavioral, and health factors are needed to reduce sedentary behavior in this population.
