Ecosystem service (ES) flows across geophysical and administrative boundaries are ubiquitous and are receiving more attention in an increasingly metacoupled world. Omitting trans-boundary ES flows from ES assessments will lead to unilateral conclusions and underestimation of ES contributions over distances. Inner Mongolia is an important ecological security barrier of China and Eurasia, but the trans-boundary effect of this barrier is difficult to be quantitatively evaluated and is rarely assessed. This study assessed the ecological security barrier function of Inner Mongolia from the perspective of trans-boundary ES flows, including wind prevention and sand fixation (WPSF), water provision (WP), carbon sequestration (CS) and livestock product provision (LPP) service flows. The trans-boundary value flows for the WPSF, WP, CS and LPP services in 2010 were 6.20 x 10(10) CNY (Chinese currency, yuan), 0.21 x 10(10) CNY, 1.29 x 10(10) CNY and 1.27 x 10(10) CNY, respectively, and 5.89 x 10(10) CNY, 0.16 x 10(10) CNY, 0.37 x 10(10) CNY and 1.33 x 10(10) CNY, respectively, in 2015; correspondingly, the percentages of these trans-boundary value flows in terms of the total value flow were 69.12%, 2.34%, 14.38% and 14.16%, respectively, in 2010 and 76.00%, 2.06%, 4.77% and 17.16%, respectively, in 2015. Therefore, WPSF service plays a more important role in the transboundary ecological security barrier function of Inner Mongolia. This study can enhance the understanding of trans-boundary telecoupling in an integral socio-ecological system and identify the critical ESs to form a foundation for ecological conservation measures considering sustainable development.

Mapping the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service relationships and bundles in Ningxia, China

Jie Xu, Shuo Wang, Yu Xiao, Gaodi Xie, Yangyang Wang, Changshun Zhang, Ping Li, Guangchun Lei

Summary: This study selected and assessed 8 representative ES types in Ningxia, revealing the tradeoff or synergistic relationships between paired ESs and their linkages with socioecological driving factors. Spatiotemporal dynamic changes in ESBs were mapped in Ningxia from 2000 to 2015, showing significant differences in natural and socioeconomic conditions from south to north in the region. The results highlighted the coupled relationships among these ESs and certain achievements in ecological construction in Ningxia, with most ES pairs mainly positively correlated at all scales.

Summary: The study revealed that China's total grain production increased significantly over a 30-year period, mainly concentrated in the northeast-southwest direction. Grain consumption was primarily focused in the central and eastern regions of China, especially in East and Central China. Overall, the pattern of self-sufficiency in grain production developed well during the study period.

How to coordinate cross-regional water resource relationship by integrating water supply services flow and interregional ecological compensation

Jie Xu, Yu Xiao, Gaodi Xie, Jingya Liu, Keyu Qin, Yangyang Wang, Changshun Zhang, Guangchun Lei

Summary: This study uses water supply services as an example to establish a framework for interregional ecological compensation, revealing that most regions play dual roles as both water suppliers and users in the process, requiring corresponding ecological compensation based on the situation.

Assessment of the benefit diffusion of windbreak and sand fixation service in National Key Ecological Function areas in China

Jie Xu, Yu Xiao, Gaodi Xie, Yangyang Wang, Guangchun Lei

Summary: The study assessed the benefit diffusion process of windbreak and sand fixation service (WSFS) in National Key Ecological Function Areas (NKEFAs) by simulating WSFS diffusion paths and combining the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) model. Results showed that WSFS beneficiary areas spread beyond China to the East Asian region, with varying diffusion amounts in different NKEFAs. Additionally, the distribution frequency of diffusion paths and benefit diffusion effects exhibit distance attenuation characteristics.

Summary: This study aimed to address the issue of waste of water, land, and human resources in cotton seed production in Xinjiang, China. By investigating the spatial suitability of climate, land and water resources, and infrastructure, suitable areas for different cotton species were identified. The results showed that the western Tarim Basin in Xinjiang is the superior area for producing cotton seed of EMC, EMMC, and LSC.

Seasonal and daily variations in stem water relations between co-occurring Larix principis-rupprechtii and Picea meyeri at different elevations

Feng Xue, Yuan Jiang, Manyu Dong, Mingchang Wang, Xinyuan Ding, Xianji Yang, Minghao Cui, Hui Xu, Muyi Kang

Summary: The study monitored stem radius variations of Larix principis-rupprechtii and Picea meyeri at different elevations, revealing species-specific responses to tree water deficit-induced stem shrinkage (TWD) and daily stem cycles. TWD showed an elevational trend for Larix principis-rupprechtii and a closer relationship with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) for both species. Additionally, the daily amplitude of stem variations differed between the two species in different seasonal periods and showed distinct responses to environmental factors over the year.

The story of grain self-sufficiency: China's food security and food for thought

Yingnan Niu, Gaodi Xie, Yu Xiao, Jingya Liu, Huixia Zou, Keyu Qin, Yangyang Wang, Mengdong Huang

Summary: This study investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of grain self-sufficiency at the county level in China. It found that the number of counties with self-insufficiency decreased while those with high-level self-sufficiency increased. In the future, China's overall grain self-sufficiency and ration self-sufficiency levels are expected to improve, especially under maximum grain yield increase rate.
