Summary: This study compares individuals with floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) to individuals suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) without FES, and finds that FES patients have a higher prevalence of comorbidities related to matrix metalloproteinase dysfunction, and significant improvement in daytime hypersomnolence with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common disease characterized by upper airway collapse during sleep, leading to chronic intermittent hypoxaemia and systemic inflammation. OSA is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, affecting coagulation and fibrinolysis processes. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and clinical implications of OSA-related changes in these processes.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed a case series of 17 patients with facial nerve palsy undergoing lower eyelid periosteal flap procedures. It was found that horizontal deficiency was encountered during surgery, but was effectively managed with a periosteal flap. Postoperatively, all patients had improved lower eyelid position, although 4 patients required redo surgery at 1-year follow-up.

Summary: Patients with OSA had higher AIP and triglyceride, and lower HDL-C levels. AIP was significantly correlated with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale score, the apnoea-hypopnoea index, and oxygen desaturation index, but not with markers of sleep quality.

Summary: This review provides a summary of the interactions between pregnancy and breathing during sleep, and highlights the changes in respiratory function that can increase the incidence and severity of sleep-disordered breathing. The increased risk of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome during pregnancy is discussed, and the potential impact of increasing obesity rates on sleep-disordered breathing in pregnant women is considered.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), affecting its induction, maintenance, severity, and treatment. The current prevention method, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), has limited effectiveness due to poor compliance. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of arrhythmia in OSA can lead to the development of better therapies and treatment selection to complement CPAP. Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) in OSA leads to long-term changes in ion channel currents, inflammation, and fibrosis, contributing to atrial remodeling and dysregulation of electrical function. Atrial stretch during apneas further promotes structural remodeling and affects calcium handling. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanistic insights and their roles in arrhythmia.

Summary: The study compared the severity of OSA and the prevalence of cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory co-morbidities between OSA patients who had undergone tonsillectomy and those who had not. Patients who had undergone tonsillectomy presented with less severe OSA at the time of diagnosis, and had a lower prevalence of Type II diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular co-morbidities.

Summary: Respiratory effort is a main feature of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and is associated with sympathetic overactivity. This study found that the percentage of total sleep time spent with increased respiratory effort (REMOV,%TST), measured by mandibular jaw movements, can predict the prevalence of hypertension in adults with OSA.

Summary: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to objectively assess the salivary flow rate and composition and periodontal inflammation in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients. The study found that subjects without OSA had higher salivary cortisol concentrations than OSA groups, and higher plaque scores were associated with a higher AHI. Subjects with hyposalivation had higher concentrations of salivary electrolytes and lower salivary pH levels.

Summary: This study describes a highly therapeutic, efficient, and cost-effective method called subpalpebral antibiotic lavage (SAL) for managing severe bacterial keratitis. By providing continuous antibiotic irrigation to the ocular surface, SAL can effectively improve patient's condition and visual acuity. However, the utilization of this technique is currently low.

Summary: With advancements in modern cataract surgery techniques and widespread use of premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), patient expectations are high. While the need for IOL explantation remains low, it is still an ongoing issue. To address the challenges associated with IOL explantation, a new technique has been introduced to aid surgeons in safely and efficiently performing the procedure.

Summary: The development of contact lenses in the late 1940s allowed both ametropes to be less dependent on glasses and to change their eye color using colored contact lenses. This had a significant impact on facial and ocular cosmesis, particularly for public figures like actors. Measurements of contact lenses and casts suggest that they were made for Marilyn Monroe, who may have been myopic, used colored contact lenses, and experienced contact lens overwear syndrome. The importance of ocular cosmesis is often overlooked in ophthalmic practice, but it is of great interest and importance to patients, as reflected in current techniques aimed at improving cosmesis.

Summary: This article reviews the literature on the removal of crystalline lens epithelial cells (LECs) during routine phacoemulsification and concludes that it should be incorporated as a standard technique for surgeons. The evidence suggests that LEC removal is safe and offers significant benefits for patients, including reducing capsule opacification and decreasing the need for complicated procedures in the long term.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of cataract in pilots by analyzing medical records of commercial airline pilots diagnosed with cataract between 2011 and 2016. The results showed that the prevalence of cataract in pilots aged 60 and above was 11.6%, while it was only 0.5% in pilots aged below 60. The study also found that there was no significant difference in cataract prevalence based on the ambient ultraviolet radiation levels, although the lowest prevalence was observed in the low-UV state of Victoria. Furthermore, cataracts in pilots aged 60 and above were mostly bilateral and mild, while cataracts in pilots below 60 were more likely to be unilateral and severe.

Summary: This study presents exemplars of pseudo-hallucinations experienced by individuals with bipolar disorder, suggesting their overrepresentation in this condition and arguing that their presence does not indicate psychosis. The historical definitions of pseudo-hallucinations are reviewed, and six profiles are presented, considering manifestations, sequencing, and response to medication in bipolar disorder patients. The findings indicate the richness of expression, variable time course, and response to medication of pseudo-hallucinations in individuals with bipolar disorder.

Summary: Metal-faced sandwich panels with a rigid polyurethane foam core, known as insulated metal panels (IMPs), are produced through the injection of a reacting PU mixture in a closed cavity. However, this injection process often leads to defects and non-uniform foam distribution, negatively impacting the panel's performance. To address this issue, a Finite Element Method model was developed to simulate and optimize the foam injection and expansion processes, aiming to achieve defect-free products.
