Summary: Parental supply of alcohol is associated with alcohol-related harms and severity of alcohol use disorder in Thai middle school students. Supply of alcohol from peers and siblings plays an important role in both outcomes. An increasing number of sources of alcohol supply increases the risk of alcohol-related harm and severity of alcohol use disorder.

Summary: Drinking alcohol during adolescence has both short-term and long-term effects on physical and mental health. A multicenter cross-sectional study in China found that the school environment, especially friends' drinking behaviors, significantly influenced adolescent drinking behavior. Students with more friends who drank were more likely to drink themselves, and factors such as classmates' drinking behaviors, friends' persuasion, and attending parties were also associated with increased risk of adolescent drinking. On the other hand, school policies and regulations banning drinking were protective factors.

Summary: Physically-active adults are more likely to consume alcohol, but the association may vary when adults also use tobacco and/or cannabis, which could increase substance-use related harms. Tobacco and cannabis use weakened the positive associations between physical activity and odds of drinking, indicating a negative or null effect. The combination of physical activity and substance use may reflect shared reasons for engaging in these behaviors.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between a school-based screening and brief intervention (SBI) program and substance use among youths. The results showed that exposure to the SBI program was associated with a smaller increase in cannabis use among middle school students. These findings suggest that implementing SBI programs in schools may help reduce substance use among adolescents.

Summary: This study explores the correlation between long working hours and the onset of risky alcohol use. The study involved a representative sample of 11,226 workers in South Korea and used the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test to assess risky alcohol use. The findings indicate that working over 55 hours per week is associated with a higher likelihood of risky alcohol use, and this association is observed in both male and female workers. Cumulative exposure to long working hours (>40 hours per week) is positively correlated with risky alcohol use in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, implementing appropriate work-hour policies is crucial in preventing workers from engaging in risky alcohol use.

Summary: The intersecting issues of intimate partner violence (IPV) and alcohol abuse in South Africa are often characterized as disasters. Ethnographic research shows a consistent relationship between excessive drinking patterns and IPV, with findings suggesting that domestic violence measures should include questions about stress. The authors argue against pathologizing the relationship between IPV and alcohol abuse, instead focusing on how violence within the home has become a normalized disaster in structured ways.
