Liparis napoensis, a new orchid species belonging to section Cestichis from Guangxi, China is described and illustrated. It occurs in the karst limestone forest. The new species is morphologically similar to L. viridiflora and L. somae, but can be readily distinguished by having narrowly oblong-falcate petals; flabellate-quadrate lip distinctly concave at base and emarginate at apex; conspicuously arcuate column with a pair of wedge-shaped wings.

Summary: Based on re-evaluation of morphological characters, Bulbophyllum obtusangulum is proposed as a heterotypic synonym of B. tseanum, which expands the distribution of the latter from being previously endemic to Hong Kong.

Characterization of embryo and protocorm development of Paphiopedilum spicerianum

Lin Fang, Xinping Kong, Yingting Wen, Ji Li, Yuying Yin, Lin Li, Guohua Ma, Kunlin Wu, Songjun Zeng

Summary: Paphiopedilum spicerianum is a rare orchid species with high ornamental value. Efficient propagation through asymbiotic germination is hindered by high protocorm developmental arresting rate and the need for a better understanding of embryo and protocorm development mechanisms. Transcriptome analysis revealed differentially expressed genes related to secondary metabolite metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, and photosynthesis during different protocorm developmental stages. Candidate genes related to embryo and shoot development showed distinct temporal expression patterns during protocorm development.

Summary: Paphiopedilum, a genus of Orchidaceae, is highly valued for its ornamental qualities. This study investigates a yellow leaf mutant and reveals the molecular mechanisms behind its coloration. The mutant exhibits decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid content, as well as abnormal chloroplast structure. Key genes related to leaf yellowing are identified through transcriptomic analysis. These findings contribute to our understanding of leaf color variation and the breeding of Paphiopedilum varieties with enhanced horticultural value.

Summary: A new species, Liparis casseabria, is described and illustrated in this article. It is morphologically similar to L. jovispluvii, but can be easily distinguished by its conspicuous underground tuber, narrowly lanceolate petals, dramatically folded lip with entire margin and emarginated apex.

The Complete Chloroplast Genomes of Blepharoglossum elegans and B. grossum and Comparative Analysis with Related Species (Orchidaceae, Malaxideae)

Wenting Yang, Kunlin Wu, Lin Fang, Songjun Zeng, Lin Li

Summary: This study sequenced and annotated the chloroplast genomes of two Blepharoglossum species, finding a relatively conserved gene content and arrangement, but still identifying a high number of SNPs and indels. Comparative analyses among six chloroplast genomes in Malaxidinae revealed significant sequence divergences in intergenic and coding regions. Phylogenetic analysis showed a close sister group relationship between Blepharoglossum and Oberonia.
