Diabetes mellitus is the leading chronic disease in the world, and diabetic nephropathy (DN) as one of its complications could increase the mortality. The development of DN is associated to abnormal hemodynamic factors like cytokine networks and the intervention of metabolic risk factors like blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipid. However, the pathogenesis of DN is still poorly understood. Although glucose-lowering drugs and insulins have significant effects on blood glucose, the fluctuation of blood glucose or other risk factors could continuously damage the kidney. Recent studies reported that the progression of DN is closely related to the expression of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), which is important for the early diagnosis and targeted intervention of DN. In this review, we briefly summarize the published studies on the functions and potential mechanism of reported lncRNA in the regulation of DN.

Based on Network Pharmacology Tools to Investigate the Molecular Mechanism of Cordyceps sinensis on the Treatment of Diabetic Nephropathy

Yan Li, Lei Wang, Bojun Xu, Liangbin Zhao, Li Li, Keyang Xu, Anqi Tang, Shasha Zhou, Lu Song, Xiao Zhang, Huakui Zhan

Summary: This study explored the therapeutic mechanisms of Cordyceps sinensis in diabetic nephropathy (DN) through network pharmacology analysis. Seven active ingredients were identified in Cordyceps, with potential therapeutic targets such as TNF, MAPK1, EGFR, ACE, and CASP3. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analyses showed that Cordyceps primarily affects inflammatory response, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in treating DN.

Circulating exosomal miRNAs and cancer early diagnosis

L. Zhu, L. Zhao, Q. Wang, S. Zhong, X. Guo, Y. Zhu, J. Bao, K. Xu, S. Liu

Summary: miRNAs are small non-coding ribonucleic acids that play key roles in cancer development and can be encapsulated in exosomes released into the circulatory system. Circulating exosome-derived miRNAs have the potential to replace conventional biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis.

Toll-like receptor 4 is a master regulator for colorectal cancer growth under high-fat diet by programming cancer metabolism

Xianjing Hu, Sarwat Fatima, Minting Chen, Keyang Xu, Chunhua Huang, Rui-Hong Gong, Tao Su, Hoi Leong Xavier Wong, Zhaoxiang Bian, Hiu Yee Kwan

Summary: The study identified the master regulator TLR4 in CRC growth under high-fat diet, showing that palmitic acid and TLR4 play key roles in promoting cancer growth. Furthermore, palmitic acid regulates TLR4 expression in a PU.1-dependent manner, and TLR4 controls cancer metabolism to enhance CRC growth under HFD conditions.

The impact of obesity on adipocyte-derived extracellular vesicles

Hiu Yee Kwan, Minting Chen, Keyang Xu, Baisen Chen

Summary: This article critically reviews the impact of obesity on the exosomal cargo contents and the biogenesis of adipocyte-derived exosomes. It also discusses the differences in exosomal contents in different adipose depots, as well as the impact of obesity on exosomes derived from stromal vascular fraction components. The review also touches upon the development and potential application of exosome-based therapy for obesity and its comorbidities.

Lnc524369 promotes hepatocellular carcinoma progression and predicts poor survival by activating YWHAZ-RAF1 signaling

Wei Zheng, Guo-Liang Shen, Ke-Yang Xu, Qiao-Qiao Yin, Tian-Chen Hui, Zhe-Wen Zhou, Cheng-An Xu, Shou-Hao Wang, Wen-Hao Wu, Ling-Fei Shi, Hong-Ying Pan

Summary: Lnc524369 is significantly upregulated in liver cancer cells and human HCC tissues, and its overexpression is associated with the proliferation, migration, and invasion of liver cancer cells. YWHAZ and RAF1 proteins, as well as YWHAZ mRNA, are overexpressed in liver cancer, and their overexpression can be attenuated by Lnc524369 overexpression. Lnc524369 and its downstream target YWHAZ and RAF1 are negatively associated with overall survival time.

Diagnostic Potential of the Serum lncRNAs HOTAIR, BRM and ICR for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Zhong-Han Lou, Ke-Yang Xu, Liang Qiao, Xiao-Qian Su, Yuan Ou-Yang, Liang-Bin Miao, Fang Liu, Yi Wang, Ai Fu, Xian-Hua Ren, Jing-Song Huang, Zhao-Yi Li, Jian-Feng Bao

Summary: This study investigated the potential application of three long noncoding RNAs (HOTAIR, BRM, and ICR) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that serum levels of these lncRNAs were associated with the occurrence and prognosis of HCC, and correlated with clinical indicators. The combination of these lncRNAs with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) improved the diagnostic accuracy for HCC.
