Summary: This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between handgrip strength and the development of Parkinson's Disease (PD) among older adults. The results showed that individuals with lower handgrip strength had a higher risk of developing PD, and the relationship between handgrip strength and PD risk varied between genders. This suggests that handgrip strength can be an important measure for screening older adults at risk of developing PD.

Summary: A negative association was found between handgrip strength and chronic diseases, with individuals with higher handgrip strength having lower odds of Parkinson's disease, stroke, and emotional disorders. Evaluating handgrip strength may serve as a valuable clinical measure and preventive strategy for these diseases.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to map out definitions and assessment methods of muscle quality in older adults. A total of 96 articles were included, revealing a substantial heterogeneity of definitions and assessment methods across functional and morphological domains. Standardizing the definition of muscle quality may help utilize it as a potential marker of skeletal muscle health in older adults.

Summary: This study assessed the trends in depression symptoms and executive function among older adults, and examined their association across age. It also compared older adults who met physical activity guidelines with those who did not. The results showed that depression symptoms were most severe at age 62, while executive function was highest at age 60 and declined steadily. Older adults who met physical activity guidelines had better executive function and less severe depression symptoms. The study concluded that age differences should be considered in health programs and treatments for mental health and cognition in older adulthood, and encouraging physical activity may help protect older adults from depression-related cognitive decline.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on glycaemic control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and to examine the characteristics of the interventions. The study found that exercise interventions longer than 24 weeks, with at least 60 minutes of high-intensity exercise per session, may serve as a supportive therapy for metabolic control in youth with T1DM.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association between glycated hemoglobin and physical activity, sedentary behavior, and physical fitness in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The findings suggest that low levels of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness, as well as extensive sedentary behavior, may contribute to poor glycemic control in youth with type 1 diabetes.

Summary: Exercise intolerance remains a major unmet medical need in patients with heart failure, and skeletal myopathy is considered as the major limiting factor. Recent studies have suggested that circulating myokines synthesized and secreted by skeletal muscle may provide new insights into the pathophysiology and classification of HF-related skeletal myopathy. These myokines may also serve as biomarkers to personalize physical training for patients with HF and exercise intolerance. Furthermore, the production and secretion of myokines in patients with HF may interact with systemic alterations and affect cardiac structure and function, which can influence adverse cardiac remodeling and clinical outcomes in HF patients.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fear of hypoglycemia and physical activity and glycemic metrics in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The results showed that patients with fear of hypoglycemia were more active, less sedentary, and had similar glycemic metrics to those without fear. Therefore, fear of hypoglycemia may be less of a barrier to an active lifestyle than previously believed.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of physical activity (PA) and sitting time (ST) in South American countries, and analyzed their association with sociodemographic factors. The study showed that 70.3% of adults in South America met the PA guidelines, while 14.1% had elevated ST. Women were less likely to achieve recommended levels of PA. Individuals with higher education were more likely to have higher leisure-time PA but lower occupational PA and elevated ST. Older adults were less likely to participate in PA.

Summary: This study analyzed data from a nationally representative US cohort and found that adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines during adolescence is associated with lower risk of abdominal obesity in adulthood. Adolescents who met screen time recommendation alone or combined with physical activity, as well as those who met all three recommendations, had lower waist circumference in adulthood. In addition, adhering to the 24-h movement guidelines during adolescence was also associated with lower risk of abdominal obesity in adulthood.
