Among European countries, optimal birth weight at which the mortality is minimal is shown to be different by country. We investigated this difference examining one geopolitical population, the U.S. term live births, born to the five groups of the same ethnic parents; White, Black, Hispanic, North Asian, and South Asian. North Asians and South Asians had more favorable maternal factors for birth weight. Yet, Whites had the highest mean birth weight and South Asians, the lowest. However, neonatal mortality rate in Whites was 0.78 per 1,000 live births, significantly higher than 0.36 and 0.72 per 1,000 live births in North Asians and South Asians, respectively. Other maternal factors hardly explained this ethnic disparity in birth weight or mortality. Optimal birth weight was greatest in Whites (3,890 g), and least in South Asians (3,491 g). However, neonatal mortality at optimal birth weight was significantly lower in North Asians. Adjustment of maternal factors except parental ethnicity changed little of this difference. Optimal birth weight and its mortality differ by ethnicity. On planning the best birth outcome in a population, one should consider the variable mortality risks by ethnicity.

The impact of neonatal morbidities on child growth and developmental outcomes in very low birth weight infants: a nationwide cohort study

Jung Ho Han, So Jin Yoon, Joo Hee Lim, Jeong Eun Shin, Ho Seon Eun, Min Soo Park, Kook In Park, Soon Min Lee

Summary: Growth in preterm infants has long-term implications for neurodevelopmental outcomes, with some infants showing growth parameters below the 30-40th percentile of normal values at 5 years. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, sepsis, and periventricular leukomalacia were associated with growth restrictions in weight, height, and head circumference, highlighting the importance of regular checkups and early interventions for optimal growth in preterm infants.

Patent ductus arteriosus treatment trends and associated morbidities in neonates

Joonsik Park, So J. Yoon, Jungho Han, In G. Song, Joohee Lim, Jeong E. Shin, Ho S. Eun, Kook Park, Min S. Park, Soon M. Lee

Summary: This study evaluated national epidemiologic data on infants treated for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in Korea and found an increase in the prevalence of PDA diagnosis and treatment in very low birth weight infants in recent years. Surgical treatment had a higher risk of mortality compared to conservative treatment, while surgical and/or medical treatments were associated with a higher risk of morbidity. Recent trends have shown an increased use of conservative management for PDA, leading to improved outcomes in very low birth weight infants.

Growth failure of very low birth weight infants during the first 3 years: A Korean neonatal network

Joohee Lim, So Jin Yoon, Jeong Eun Shin, Jung Ho Han, Soon Min Lee, Ho Seon Eun, Min Soo Park, Kook In Park

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for growth failure in VLBW infants at 18-24 months and 36 months of age, and found that factors such as male sex, growth failure at birth, periventricular leukomalacia were associated with an increased risk of growth failure at follow-up1. Growth failure remains a concern, and close monitoring of growth and nutrition is recommended for VLBW infants with risk factors.

Association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia and early respiratory morbidity in children with respiratory distress syndrome: a case-control study using nationwide data

Jeong Eun Shin, Haerin Jang, Jung Ho Han, Joonsik Park, Soo Yeon Kim, Yoon Hee Kim, Ho Seon Eun, Soon Min Lee, Kook In Park, Myung Hyun Sohn, Min Soo Park, Kyung Won Kim

Summary: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) may have an impact on childhood lower respiratory illness (LRI) and asthma after the neonatal period. The study found that BPD is associated with higher rates of LRI readmission and asthma prevalence in children with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

Effects of Hepatic Impairment on the Pharmacokinetic Profile and Safety of Lobeglitazone

Jungsin Park, Choon Ok Kim, Eun Sil Oh, Jung Il Lee, Ja Kyung Kim, Sang Hoon Ahn, Do Young Kim, Seung Up Kim, Beom Kyung Kim, Yong Eun Chung, Se-Mi Kim, Min Soo Park

Summary: This study compared the pharmacokinetic profile and safety of lobeglitazone in patients with hepatic impairment and healthy controls. The results showed no significant differences in lobeglitazone plasma concentrations and pharmacokinetic parameters between mild or moderate hepatic impairment patients and control groups. The concentrations and pharmacokinetic parameters of the major metabolite M7 also did not differ significantly between the patient groups and controls. These findings suggest that lobeglitazone can be safely used in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment.

Tools for assessing lung fluid in neonates with respiratory distress

So Jin Yoon, Jung Ho Han, Kee Hyun Cho, Joonsik Park, Soon Min Lee, Min Soo Park

Summary: This study evaluated the usefulness of various tools, such as lung ultrasonography, cytokine analysis, and electrical cardiometry, for the diagnosis of transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in neonates. The results showed that lung ultrasound and electrical cardiometry are reliable diagnostic tools for assessing infants with respiratory distress, and further studies are needed to confirm their clinical usefulness.

Effect of Rifampicin on the Pharmacokinetics of Evogliptin in Healthy Volunteers

Yesong Shin, Chungam Choi, Eun Sil Oh, Choon Ok Kim, Kyungsoo Park, Min Soo Park

Summary: The study showed that rifampicin significantly reduced the AUC0-96h of Evogliptin without affecting Cmax. Rifampicin was found to reduce Evogliptin metabolism by inducing cytochrome P450. Co-administration of the two drugs did not significantly alter adverse events.

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug-drug interactions between evogliptin and empagliflozin or dapagliflozin in healthy male volunteers

Dasohm Kim, Minkyu Choi, Byung Hak Jin, Taegon Hong, Choon Ok Kim, Byung Won Yoo, Min Soo Park

Summary: Evogliptin (EV) is a novel DPP4 inhibitor used for glycemic control in patients with T2DM. This study evaluated the PK and PD interactions between EV and SGLT2 inhibitors in healthy volunteers, as combination therapy has been considered effective for T2DM treatment. The study found that co-administration of EV with either empagliflozin or dapagliflozin did not significantly alter the PK parameters or PD changes.

The effects of long-term cumulative HbA1c exposure on the development and onset time of dementia in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: Hospital based retrospective study (2005-2021)

Sunyoung Cho, Choon Ok Kim, Bong-soo Cha, Eosu Kim, Chung Mo Nam, Min-Gul Kim, Min Soo Park

Summary: This study examines the cumulative effects of long-term glycemic exposure on the development of dementia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results show that poorly controlled blood sugar is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, and higher cumulative glycemic exposure may lead to a shorter time to dementia onset.

Summary: This study evaluated the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions of DWP16001 and phentermine, and found that the combination therapy was similar to monotherapy in terms of PK and PD. The combination therapy group may contribute to weight loss, and participants tolerated the treatment well.
