Summary: This study assesses the impact of the 2008 recession on the health of immigrant newborns in Italy using a unique dataset of birth records and municipal-level real estate information. The findings suggest that the health at birth of children born to immigrants deteriorated more compared to children born to Italian natives. The negative effects on immigrants are driven by the main economic activity of the ethnic group and its related network at the municipal level, with those employed in the most affected sectors during the recession suffering the most. Living in a municipality with a more organized ethnic network through registered immigrant associations helps mitigate the recession hardship for immigrants. The heterogeneous effects on Italian newborns cannot be explained by the characteristics of ethnic groups and their organization at the municipal level, indicating the presence of network effects rather than neighborhood effects.

Summary: A study conducted in India shows an association between exposure to PM2.5 during the in utero and post-delivery periods and child survival. This study highlights the need for measures to reduce ambient air pollution levels, especially during pregnancy and early life stages, in India and other countries where guideline values are exceeded.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease that displays heterogeneity across different ethnicities. Genetic factors, such as Filaggrin (FLG) mutations, and immunological pathways, including Th2 hyperactivation and Th17-mediated signals, contribute to the differences in AD among racial groups. This heterogeneity has important therapeutic implications, as a tailored treatment strategy targeting specific immunologic pathways in each ethnic subgroup may be necessary.

Summary: Ethnic disparities in stillbirth and infant mortality rates have been demonstrated in Europe. The relationship between migration and health outcomes is evolving over time, with factors such as education and income playing a role in these disparities. Differences in risk were found among immigrants from various countries, with some groups showing particularly high risks while others had lower risks compared to the native population. Strengthening maternity care systems to better address the needs of immigrant women may help reduce these disparities.

Summary: The decline in crime in the late 20th century was a significant societal change in the US. This study explores the relationship between county-level murder rates and birth outcomes for different racial groups, using data from the FBI and birth certificates. The findings indicate that higher murder rates are associated with increased risks of adverse birth outcomes among different racial groups. These findings have implications for prenatal and postpartum care and support the notion that the decrease in crime was linked to improved outcomes for affected populations.

Summary: By adjusting for real-population exposures, our analysis reveals that Black and Native American mortality disparities exceed mortality from circulatory diseases. The disadvantages are 72% among Blacks (men: 47%, women: 98%) and 65% among Native Americans (men: 45%, women: 92%), larger than those based on life expectancy. In contrast, estimated advantages for Asian Americans are over three times (men: 176%, women: 283%) and, for Hispanics, two times (men: 123%, women: 190%) larger than those based on life expectancy.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of factors such as diabetes, obesity, and weight gain on the accuracy of fetal weight estimation through sonography. Results showed that diabetes, obesity, and excess weight gain do not necessarily affect the accuracy of estimated fetal weight, and the extent of error in estimation is closely related to birth weight variations.

Summary: Birth weight is important for piglet survival, and there is ongoing interest in understanding the impact of nutrition during gestation on birth weight. This paper reviews previous attempts to increase birth weight and proposes targeting specific windows of gestation for nutritional manipulations. The mean birth weight needs to be increased by at least 50-100 g to improve survival rates for piglets with a birth weight below 1 kg. However, it is unlikely that the mean birth weight can be increased by more than 100 g based on existing studies. Nutritional manipulations during the middle of gestation or during the embryonic phase may be more effective.

Summary: The extreme right-left partisanship in the current US context affects state policies, with left-leaning state policy orientation being associated with lower odds of adverse birth outcomes, especially for infants born in the US and White mothers. However, the association between left-leaning state policy orientation and lower odds of adverse birth outcomes may be explained by stable characteristics of states.

The results suggest that both maternal and paternal age are significantly associated with these risks. Additionally, parental education levels are also correlated with term low birth weight and macrosomia.

Summary: Infants born preterm and with low birth weight are at greater risk for long-term neurodevelopmental challenges compared to term-born peers. Inequities in preterm birth rates and short-term morbidities based on race, ethnicity, language, and nativity have been well-documented. However, there is limited understanding of how these inequities impact long-term outcomes, although concerns have been raised about unequal access to post-discharge support services for preterm infants. This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on the impact of race, ethnicity, nativity, and language on long-term outcomes, and offers guidance for future research, intervention, and advocacy to address inequities in neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Summary: Growth in preterm infants has long-term implications for neurodevelopmental outcomes, with some infants showing growth parameters below the 30-40th percentile of normal values at 5 years. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, sepsis, and periventricular leukomalacia were associated with growth restrictions in weight, height, and head circumference, highlighting the importance of regular checkups and early interventions for optimal growth in preterm infants.

Summary: This study evaluated national epidemiologic data on infants treated for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in Korea and found an increase in the prevalence of PDA diagnosis and treatment in very low birth weight infants in recent years. Surgical treatment had a higher risk of mortality compared to conservative treatment, while surgical and/or medical treatments were associated with a higher risk of morbidity. Recent trends have shown an increased use of conservative management for PDA, leading to improved outcomes in very low birth weight infants.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for growth failure in VLBW infants at 18-24 months and 36 months of age, and found that factors such as male sex, growth failure at birth, periventricular leukomalacia were associated with an increased risk of growth failure at follow-up1. Growth failure remains a concern, and close monitoring of growth and nutrition is recommended for VLBW infants with risk factors.

Summary: This study compared the pharmacokinetic profile and safety of lobeglitazone in patients with hepatic impairment and healthy controls. The results showed no significant differences in lobeglitazone plasma concentrations and pharmacokinetic parameters between mild or moderate hepatic impairment patients and control groups. The concentrations and pharmacokinetic parameters of the major metabolite M7 also did not differ significantly between the patient groups and controls. These findings suggest that lobeglitazone can be safely used in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment.

Summary: Evogliptin (EV) is a novel DPP4 inhibitor used for glycemic control in patients with T2DM. This study evaluated the PK and PD interactions between EV and SGLT2 inhibitors in healthy volunteers, as combination therapy has been considered effective for T2DM treatment. The study found that co-administration of EV with either empagliflozin or dapagliflozin did not significantly alter the PK parameters or PD changes.
