Tumors markers can be described as molecular products expressed by neoplasia tissues (immunohistochemistry), or metabolized and secreted by tumor and characterized biochemically in body fluids such as blood and urine. They may have utility as indicators of tumor stage and grade as well useful for monitoring responses to treatment and predicting recurrence, progression, development of metastases, or even patient survival. Unfortunately, in some cases they may have no identified clinical potential. Several investigations have been carried out, especially in the last decade, using biotechnological methods, in order to identify new potential tumor markers. By translating these findings into clinical use one may facilitate accurate diagnosis and prognostic prediction, and contribute to individualized treatment. The objective of this review is to describe some biomarkers with potential use in clinical settings of uterine cervix, ovary, and endometrium carcinomas. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Lourianne Nascimento Cavalcante, Jun Porto, Daniel Mazo, Adhemar Longatto-Filho, Jose Tadeu Stefano, Andre Castro Lyra, Flair Jose Carrilho, Rui Manuel Reis, Venancio A. F. Alves, Arun J. Sanyal, Claudia P. Oliveira

Summary: The PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 variants are associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its progression. This study aimed to evaluate the association between genetic ancestry, represented by ancestry informative markers (AIM), and PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 polymorphisms in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD in an admixed population. The results showed that greater African genetic ancestry was associated with a lower frequency of the PNPLA3 G allele, indicating a potential protective factor against NAFLD in individuals with African ancestry.

Management of Early-Stage Vulvar Cancer

Priscila Grecca Pedrao, Yasmin Medeiros Guimaraes, Luani Rezende Godoy, Julio Cesar Possati-Resende, Adriane Cristina Bovo, Carlos Eduardo Mattos Cunha Andrade, Adhemar Longatto-Filho, Ricardo dos Reis

Summary: Vulvar cancer is a rare gynecological malignancy, with two main clinicopathological subtypes linked to different etiologies - one associated with HPV infection, commonly diagnosed in young women, and the other associated with lichen sclerosus, mostly diagnosed in postmenopausal women. Treatment depends on histopathology grade and staging, with surgery often combined with radiotherapy considered the gold standard. Advances in treatment include the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy to reduce surgical morbidity rates.

Interleukin-8 and Interleukin-6 Are Biomarkers of Poor Prognosis in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Paula Roberta Aguiar Pastrez, Ana Margarida Barbosa, Vania Sammartino Mariano, Rhafaela Lima Causin, Antonio Gil Castro, Egidio Torrado, Adhemar Longatto-Filho

Summary: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a rapidly progressing cancer with high mortality rates. In this study, we investigated the levels of inflammatory cytokines in ESCC patients and healthy individuals. We found increased levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 in ESCC patients. Among these cytokines, IL-8 was identified as an independent prognostic factor for ESCC. Additionally, patients with low IL-6, IL-8, TNM I/II, or those who underwent surgery had a higher overall survival rate. Our findings suggest IL-8 as a potential biomarker for ESCC.

Immunoexpression profile of hypoxia- inducible factor (HIF) targets in potentially malignant and malignant oral lesions: a pilot study

Shakiba Gholami, Cintia Chamorro-Petronacci, Mario Perez-Sayans, Jose Suarez Penaranda, Adhemar Longatto-Filho, Fatima Baltazar, Julieta Afonso

Summary: Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) are associated with an increased risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which is characterized by aggressive features and poor prognosis. Cancer cells can reprogram their metabolism through hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signaling, leading to upregulation of glycometabolism-related biomarkers. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of HIF targets in OPMD and OSCC samples and identify potential correlations with clinicopathological features and prognosis.
